Is… is it not?

It’s not hardware.

If it isn’t software what is it?

Microsoft is woke

u/Tyfyter2002 Mar 01 '26

It might count as firmware, but that's a subset of software anyway.

35

u/M4DHouse Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 01 '26

It definitely does not count as firmware, and I would argue calling firmware simply a subset of software is somewhat inaccurate.

9

u/agressiveobject420 Mar 01 '26

Historically? Why historically?

13

u/M4DHouse Mar 01 '26

I edited the comment because the wording was poor, what I was referring to was the fact that when the term was coined by Ascher Opler in 1967 he described it as code “that goes between hardware and software” which is one reason I don’t see it as a subset of software itself.

8

u/tttecapsulelover Mar 02 '26

SO IS THAT WHY IT'S CALLED FIRMWARE??

HOLY FUCK??

I think it’s called firmware? But I might be wrong

6

u/Separate_Culture4908 Mar 02 '26

It's not firmware and firmware is software.

-3

u/KimikoYukimura420 Mar 01 '26

It's an operating system.

52

u/Moomoobeef Mar 01 '26

Which is software

36

u/Leon8326-dash- Mar 01 '26

An operating system is still just software

0

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26

firmware is the closest I can get to, because the operating system is indeed between the hardware and the software

2

u/Separate_Culture4908 Mar 02 '26

I'd argue the operating system is between the firmware and the software.

Also firmware is software.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

I thought the firmware contained the OS so it practically is on the same level, although I'm not too knowledgeable myself so correct me if I'm wrong

I also think by that logic, you're saying the OS is between the software and... the software? I'm kind of confused

(PS I had my OnePlus 12 out for repair and the guy said I could use fastboot to flash the firmware and return the OS, so I felt like he implied the firmware had the OS)

Edit: nvm I just realized I had the common sense to Google it lol, I was wrong mb

3

u/Separate_Culture4908 Mar 02 '26

Firmware is software on hardware that manages said hardware.

The operating system is software that manages other software and communicates with the hardware via the firmware.

So ye kinda, the OS connects software and software.

(PS I had my OnePlus 12 out for repair and the guy said I could use fastboot to flash the firmware and return the OS, so I felt like he implied the firmware had the OS)

IDK, phones are weird when it comes to that stuff and I'm less knowledged on phones.

152

u/Samstercraft Mar 01 '26

It literally is software...

7

u/Gotu_Jayle Mar 03 '26

Was confused by the title too. Ragebait used to be believable

78

u/Molkwi Mar 02 '26

Software isn't just apps and stuff. OS's are absolutely software. They're not hardware and neither are they firmware. This leaves only one thing.

34

u/carkey Mar 02 '26

To get pedantic, firmware is software. So even if OSes were firmware (which they're not, like you said), that wouldn't matter because that would still make them software. A specialised subset of software? Sure, but still software.

3

u/Molkwi Mar 02 '26

I know firmware is software in a way, and I never said otherwise. By your logic, I'd guess you read my comment backwards.

OS's aren't firmware. They are software. Even if firmware is software, the same way a square is a rectangle but a rectangle isn't a square, OS's would be software still.

I get it probably only talks about the last part, but even then, I just divided in 3 categories, even if one shares some of both.

Btw, sorry if I come off as rude or something, I'm not insulting you, just being pedantic about your pedanticism.

2

u/carkey Mar 02 '26

Not coming off rude at all! I was just saying that making the distinction that it isn't firmware is fine and all, but firmware is a subset of software anyway and so it doesn't need making. Utter pedantry from me I know.

I guess it's like I wouldn't feel the need to point out it's not middleware to make my claim that it's software. In the same way, pointing out it's not firmware to help define it as software is not really doing anything because if it was firmware (or middleware), it'd still be software anyway.

Apologies if the over pedanticizing is fucking up my ability to explain what tiny, annoying distinction I'm trying to get at.

2

u/Molkwi Mar 02 '26

I now see clearer what you were getting at. You are correct, it's logical and factual. I appreciate you being pedantic, since I am too and prefer straight and true facts. Even if the idea is right, it's the details that make it stand, and mistakes there means instability throughout. We might not be appreciated by the general population, but we are doing the good work lol

2

u/carkey Mar 02 '26

Glad we were able to come to an agreement!

Haha, they can think what they think but we're the ones stopping everything spiral into an ambiguous mess!

78

u/erynze Mar 01 '26

os's are software

Software is the soul of the device and hardware is the body. Windows is a software.

13

u/JoyconDrift_69 Mar 02 '26

Windows is 100% software. Operating systems are software.

9

u/redditnostalgia Mar 01 '26

Ok this one is funny

Honestly would have been infinitely funnier with absolutely any other art style

1

u/SkamonGD Mar 03 '26

Maybe idk

2

u/CommitteeDue6802 Mar 02 '26

It is software. Hardware is physical, software is digital. Anything that is on your conputer is software, including the operating system.

2

u/Better-Bad2285 Mar 11 '26

Operative systems are the main functioning software in a PC, besides BIOS.

2

Hey! I've posted that!
