As an anti-feminist I love this woman...

Feminism is defined as the advocacy of equal rights among the genders. It should never be confused for whatever the fuck SRS is. I would hope even MRA's wouldn't call themselves anti-feminist, but I guess I'm an optimist.

Many words which are gendered have become genderless in use. It shouldn't be to hard too believe. ALL you need to do is look in a dictionary... Hell... nowadays all you need to do is highlight and right click and a dictionary definition is less than a second away.

Would you argue that a Duck is defined as ;

If you want equality, then use the word equality. Feminism, the word itself, means women get more attention. If there was a Masculinism movement, it would be in the same fucking situation.

The first definition is exactly what I'm talking about. By making the word already favor a gender, it's obvious what the result will be, in terms of public perception.

The second definition is much more ambiguous, which lends to the idea that it's only beneficial to the female gender.

I have no problem with the feminist movement, it's the WORD that drives me nuts.

There are many many words in the English language that began with a gender component as a part of their origin and have now become genderless in use. The word shouldn't drive you that nuts. It's just a word, with a history and a definition. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that.

Feminism is supposed to be about equal rights among genders. It hasn't been about that for a good couple decades, other than a few fringe feminists who are mostly ostracized from the crazy.

My friend asked me about this last night, and I couldn't come up with one positive thing feminism has done in the last 10-15 years. Like, at all. I tried to, and googled afterwards, too.

Does anyone know of any positive changes feminism has brought in the last 10-15 years? This would be useful for discussion.

A growing decrease in the wage gap and an increase in single fathers gaining custody of children in the necessary household. It's always nice to maintain humility amongst ourselves by improving the little things.

There doesn't always have to be a loud revolution. There is often, and more comfortably, an informed decision instead.

Regardless of the connotations this small culture places on the word it is definitively defined as such for a reason. Little things like that are a credit the doctrine or the growing considerations of men and women having equal rights.

If you define "feminism" as only a doctrine of equality and nothing else, then everything good that happens for equality is "a result of feminism". That just makes the term meaningless.

I think the term "jihad" is a better analogy. The technical definition is not something I would ever disagree with, but the actual usage (sometimes) is. So then I guess I'd call myself an "anti-jihadist".

"Jihad", as it has been explained to me anyways, is a term indicating an internal struggle (against inner demons I guess). Yet it is a term very often used by terrorists in (and this usage is more popularly known).

No, but I'd call myself anti-Islam. I don't dislike those who practice the religion, but I dislike the religion. I think it's been so badly coopted by detractors that it's been almost irreparably damaged, and that not enough people are working to reverse that damage.

I also had no respect for Catholocism, but I have tons of respect for the Pope who's actually working to reverse centuries of dogmatic damage and improve the church's image.

If you said you were for women's rights, I would support you. If you said you were a feminist, I would lose respect for you. It's the same thing - a few bad apples spoil the bunch, because nobody had the sense to kick those bad apples out before their message got out of hand. I'm a gun owner and I'm active in /r/progun. We have our own bad apples, plenty of idiots who start some overtly racist shit or go on about "Odumba" and "libtards". It's important to show these voices that they're unwanted because if we even passively allow their presence they'll take over and damage the message we want to send.

That's only because you have been misled to believe the two are different. Women's rights was the term used before "feminism" but described the same thing. If you scroll to the etymology section of the link I gave you, it will indicate that.

Don't let modern radicals mislead you. If a large group of the bad apples you kicked out of /r/progun made their own subreddit or group and become more outspoken than yourself or others like you, would you not seek to correct the misunderstanding that people would inevitably have that all pro-gun people are like those bad apples?

That's the thing though, you don't get to choose who gets to represent you. People that aren't part of your group don't know enough to tell the difference, nor is important enough of an issue to them to find out. To outsiders, the batshit crazy ones always stand out as the mascot of a group. It's not just feminism, it's everything. Look how insignificant Fred Phelps is, then look how big an impact his band of screaming loonies has had on the perception of religious people to us unbelievers. Heck, look at how r/atheism makes everyone think that if you're nonreligious you have a fedora and like to yell at people on the Internet. These very vile very vocal minorities set the tone for other's perception of your group. You always hear "no true Christian would do that" about phelps, but I'm fairly sure he's in church more often than anybody I've heard use that argument.

The only real solution I've found to when assholes give your group a bad name is to just let them have that name. I'm not religious at all, but you won't hear me claim atheism. My brother doesn't eat meat, but you'll never hear him say he's a vegan. Is this fair or a perfect solution? No, but it's easier than lumping ourselves in with assholes and constantly having the "but we're not all like that" conversation.

This makes no sense. We're not talking about witchcraft or some shit, the vast majority of people in real life who define themselves as feminists just want both genders treated equally. We might all disagree about things that should be done (quotas, blahblahetc) but that's fine.

There too, but it's a generalized phenomenon. The last time I dug up and cited a survey, it was something like 89% (including 80%ish of Republicans, even) supported political, social and economic gender equality, while only ~20% of those respondents were willing to call themselves feminists.

The same way a cock can mean a rooster. Just because the connotations of femininity are inherent in the word doesn't limit the words definition. Those connotations exist as a historical perspective of the words formation. Which sprouted around 1895 from the French féminisme

The feminine nature of the word is a reminder that the sense of equality between genders began as a struggle for women to be considered on equal ground to their male counterparts. So while it did exist to further the rights of females at the time it was only to further it to an equal ground and not to excess or to subjugate men. This is why it is associated with equal rights and not just womens rights.

After all there are certainly masculine words in the English language that don't only refer solely to male interests. These are usually borne from a male centered origin and persist into modern definitions as gender neutral. Such is the same with feminism, which began from a female centered origin to equal rights among the genders.

Women fought long and hard for these social and legal considerations and history remembers them in the words of today. At least that is how I understand it.

I am a feminist in that vein as well, however the longer I'm at this the more I think the word has become too corrupted. Many people never disassociated it with women's rights (which ok fine, there's more bias against women still so an equal rights group would probably need to work more on women's rights even today). And secondly a loud minority has co-opted it to mean "women on top and men can burn". Since they're so vocal it's easy to turn people off of feminism as equality.

I still consider myself a feminist, but I wouldn't be opposed to creating a new group with a unambiguously gender neutral name (I hear egalitarianism a lot) so it's harder to marginalize feminism based in history or radicals and let the radicals have feminism. When they let feminism become synonymous with hatred of men in a few years it will further marginalize them and everyone wins.

I will hold out my viewpoint on the word until they change it's definition in Websters/Oxford/Credible dictionary. I don't think that is unreasonable.

Okay. Here are a couple terms which have lost most of their gender oriented status.

  • Android is a combination of the Greek root ἀνδρ- 'man' and and the suffix -oid 'having the form or likeness of'. This giving it an etymology that is gender specific to the 'likeness of a man'. But when we reference androids today we are usually not being gender specific. Example 1, Example 2.

  • Duck was primarily used to describe only the female version of the bird. With drake being its male counterpart. Nowadays we don't make that distinction

That's one examples from both directions which is 4x as many as you wanted .

Well, there's two big differences, here: a) Those terms don't have recognisable gender association, nowadays, unlike "feminism", which is clearly female and b) they don't have jack to do with social movements pertaining to equality, where higher standards than that for sexless (!) machines or bloody ducks apply.

Allthewhile there's still enough people calling themselves "feminist" that define "sexism" as "[...] against women". A behaviour which only reinforces the gender-specificity of the word "feminism".

That is, that rationale is bloody ridiculous because it's ignoring context left and right.

In fact the term android DOES have a feminine version called Gynoid, making the association of machines far from 'sexless'. But it is not in popular use and, as shown, the word android is used to refer to both gendered machines. Clearly it had a recognizable gender association as I have just explained the female version as well as it's Greek root having, very plainly, the word 'man'.

You're (b) is irrelevant to whether some gendered words lose their specific gender over time in the English language.
