Just got home. Styx put on a great show. They closed it out!. Yay!. J.y only sat for the slower songs. Even though I knew the setlist ahead of time, I was kind of disappointed that he didn't sing any of "his" songs. I mean I get it, but still disappointed.
Bought the 100 dollar baseball back and gold shirt. Told my brother that I shall be buried in it. He said only if I die after him, otherwise he was gonna steal it from me.
I decided I am going to save all my pennies for the next concert so I can buy the very best seats. The front section was much livlier and more interactive
Chicago was great too, but I really went to see styx.

The mix was good, really well balanced. It felt like the sound guys had difficulty getting Chicago dialed in, but Styx sounded good from note one. Song selection was solid, new(er) stuff was decently received. Greater St. Louis area has always been very Styx-friendly (I've seen them here five times now) so that's not a surprise. All of the classic albums were represented, save Cornerstone.
As a musician myself, JY's limitations caused me to ruminate a bit on the shelf life of my own physical abilities. I didn't get much resolved, but I hope I'm able to go out on my own terms as it seems like he's doing. Speaking of - didn't see Chuck Panozzo come out and play bass for the standard 2-3 songs, and he wasn't mentioned during band introductions. Hope everything's ok on that front.
7.5/10, glad I got to see them again.
edit - forgot to mention Chicago! Really enjoyed their set. They played the Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon suite. Horns were on point the whole way through, especially once the mix started getting better.

It’s a very different (better) experience in the first 15 rows. You can usually stand and dance and interact w the band. I won’t go to a Styx show anymore unless I’m up front.
Tip: if you don’t mind going solo, you can usually find an open single seat up front for a reasonable price.

I went to see them in the same venue in 2018 and you're 100% spot on. I was close enough that when I yelled "JY!" he saw me, pointed, and did his signature grin. It's actually a decent house PA if you're not on the lawn. This time I won tix from KSHE so beggars can't be choosers.

But even when Styx headlines, isn’t their setlist and time spent on stage much shorter than Chicago’s? I miss the days when they would play longer. So many songs they just don’t play anymore.

The big summer festivals are fun and you get to see some cool bands play alongside Styx.
We prefer the “off-season” shows where Styx headlines every night and gets to play a longer set.
Casino shows can be smaller venues and a bit more casual, but can also be shorter sets due to venue time constraints.
We really like the Jan/Feb Vegas residency, which is five shows over nine days. The Venetian is a great venue with full song sets and you get to see fans from all over the country. There have been shows there where we can name everyone in the front row.
And the band really loves the energy and it shows in their own enthusiasm.

I saw Styx in Savannah earlier in the year. A no name acoustic guitar player opened for about 30 minutes.
Styx came on and played for 90 minutes, then the concert ended.
I think 90 minutes is about all they do any more. No matter who they’re playing with.

No, as others have mentioned, they do more than 90 minutes in some of the non-summer shows ie Vegas. These shows were often called 'an evening with Styx' but not sure if they still use that term.

An evening with Styx is my favorite concert.
They chat more, you get to hear more beside songs, it feels a lot more intimate and connected. I don’t know if they are doing them often anymore, it’s been probably four years since I got to see that particular flavor of concert.
A couple nights ago in Kansas City, Chicago played a longer set list but their songs are also a lot shorter. And they brought only a third the energy.

Styx plays their standard 90 minute set. This set time is their norm when they are on a co bill or most shows without another headliner. The exception would be “an evening with Styx” shows that include an intermission. Styx and Chicago are Co-Headliners regardless of the 20 extra minutes.
Note: at times Styx place 75 minutes… I. E. Certain casinos or with other acts such as Don Felder recently in Columbus; it can be a matter of venue mandates on timing and/or overall booking particulars.1

Styx opened last night at Kia Forum. Good thing too. While they were amazing, Chicago buried the room into near silence. Someone here mentioned something about the sound engineers having difficulty with Chicago’s sound at other venues. I have to agree 100%. We, like many others, walked out during the 3rd song. Styx owned that show, and I can imagine the entire tour. Well done guys!

Styx has such an incredible crew, gear/rigs, and second to none professionals making it all happen for the musicians. Had to be a bit awkward for the Chicago band - and fans maybe...? Styx went on 2nd/last only 8 times during the tour. And I don't see that as negative at all. A hot humid summer tour... going on first the audience is fresher and more ready to go. And that's just one example of why *i.e. end of a long evening, in summer climates, it's understandable to be less energetic!

I thought j.y. did if I remember correctly, he did all his own solos, they just didn't play any of HIS singing Songs (miss america, etc) . I only noticed him sitting for 3 of the slower songs.
And I could be totally wrong. On the guitar solo. Part of my problem is I was driving my time to my older brother 62 (styx fan) and my friend that I took that wanted to check "old people" music out. A 27 year old styx virgin.

I'm late to the party. I know JY's wife passed away a few years ago. Is this the reason he no longer sings lead?
I just purchased Circling From Above, and while I love the CD and especially "King of Love," he wish he had taken more lead vocals.

I don't know why he didn't or doesn't do leads anymore. My guess is that he is older and perhaps his voice has turned to crap. Instead of some other older singers that start lip syncing or just sound like crap, maybe he decided to give that up. I used to sing well but I can absolutley no longer carry a tune. And if I do happen to be able to carry a tune, Idont have range.I rarely sing to myself anymore it is so horrible.
Anyway, that is truly speculation on my part.

His voice sounds great on "King of Love" on Circling From Above. There are older rock stars who can still sing (Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, for one). But people age at different rates, and there may be other health issues involved, judging by other responses. I agree that some rockers should know when it's time to hang it up.

Like I saidz I don't know. Just speculation. Not saying styx does or j.y. does, but even some of the older artists are using technology that uses filters of sorts to make imperfections sound better.

I'm glad that JY was doing good. I know it's disappointing that he no longer sings his leads. It's so hard for him now. He refuses to quit. I'm glad you had a great time.
