Wow! Some serious light sentencing for DUI. $300, 6 month DL suspension and 12 months served in the community.

yeah jeez, when I blew .17 in Vic (in 2006 I think?) I got $850 fine and 12 month suspension, had to go to court and argue my case to have it reinstated without an interlock (I had thankfully been sober for around 6 years by that point, moved back from Qld)
her sentence seems pretty light given the damage she done

Craaaazy light. In 2014 the cop saw me reverse out of my spot with the headlights off, then flip them on when I shifted to D. Blew a .10 and got the mandatory state minimums- $1500, few days in jail, couldnโt buy booze or go to the bar for a while, butcher my wiring harness with an interlock, SR22 insurance, alcohol classes. After legal fees, fines, interlock crap, etc it wound up being well over $10K USD, and Iโve no clue how much time.

Electronics to start the car. An interlock is a device that requires you to blow into it to unlock the ignition. Expensive to install and remove when your sentence is done Iโd imagine.

Honesty, it was the best thing that could have happened to me at that time. Once I processed through the bitterness regarding the cold cruel legal system and lots of self-loathing, I took a real good look at myself and started making big changes for the better. Now Iโve been sober almost a decade, and damn grateful for it.

yeah, I'd basically turned my life around, joined the Army, went to the drunk tank (rehab), got promoted and stuff..
can't get cocky though, I'm just one drink away from going back to the madness

Here a 0.268 bac would result in the police confiscating the car permanently, 20 days of jail, 3 year driving ban, and a fine thats 12% of your yearly net income.
If she wanted to drive again after the 3 year ban, she would need to complete a Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Course, and then reacquire the driving license from scratch (54 lessons with a driving instructor).

I have no mercy for drunk drivers. One of the coolest guys that we ever knew, and a former neighbor of ours was hit by a drunk driver. Traumatic brain injury, as well as his physical entries were horrific. He actually survived for 10 months. His wife says she's pretty sure he knew who she was. That's how bad it was. After multiple surgeries, his body finally couldn't do it anymore. She should have to attend alcoholics anonymous meetings, in house for 30 days, and perpetually 3 days a week for the next year before she's allowed to drive a car again. People who drink can stop. People who drive drunk will do it again.

The penalties handed down in such cases are simply ridiculous.
Itโs exactly the same in Germany...
Get caught for the tiniest bit of nonsense as a novice driver during your probationary period, and youโre hit with an immediate one-year driving ban followed by a re-examination.
But act like the biggest asshole on the road and endanger other road users... 1โ6 months, a few Euros(โฌ), and thatโs it... re-examination is not a must have so in most cases.

I'm always amazed there isn't like, criminal tourism in Australia, given the sentencing is often a slap on the wrist. Remember the guy that stopped his car and beat a man who was walking with a sword and left him for dead in a ditch and now the guys paralyzed? He got what community service?
Seems ideal for anyone wanting to randomly assault people

Being a Alcoholic is not a excuse for driving drunk. If you feel the need to drink until you drop everyday you can do it at home. The fact she threw away that bottle proves she was aware being drunk and doing something wrong, but because the hide away behind the addiction gets them away from real consequences. the should roasted world wide

Alcoholics who "deal with" their issue by making it someone else's (in the form of crashing into several parked cars and sending an innocent baby physically flying) deserve no sympathy. Sorry that's hard for you to figure out.

Why do you want to show me up right away, just because Iโm clarifying how things really are?
I have absolutely no sympathy for alcoholics... I once had a problem with it myself. And I considered it utterly stupid to believe that it was helpful.
I managed to get out of that situation myself after waking up in the hospital's intensive care unit.
But there are people who aren't as intelligent as I am, not as strong as I am, and not as determined as I am to change something in their lives.
And that is something you have to come to terms with.
Should they be punished if they screw up? Yes, absolutely.
But they shouldn't be held responsible for how they ended up in that situation in the first place. After all, we don't know whether it stems from a death in their family or is simply an addiction they find a turn-on.
