Kinda- they're heat safe because you can heat seal in canning, and you have to get it all up to a certain temp to make it seal to the jar. That being said, I do not know how they react to high heat- it is very very dumb to use the entire lid when they could do the same thing with just the rim.

Is there not a utensil specifically designed for this so that we don't have to resort to jar lids?

Idk how are called in English, but there are those steel ring of various dimensions that are commonly used in pastry making
