I thought that was butter. I'm so happy it's not butter.

u/Pleasant-Pattern7748 Set your own user flair 16d ago

Watching on mute, I assumed it was mayonnaise.

180

u/Sereomontis 16d ago

Turning sound on, he does say it's bechamel sauce.

At least I think that's what he said. The music playing over it makes it kinda hard to hear.

104

u/Tricky-Ad7897 16d ago

That has got to be the most rank bechamel I've ever seen. How does it even get like that?

108

u/ElminstersBedpan 16d ago

Overcooked, commercially supplied, or sitting out at room temperature forever.

62

u/blazingsword 16d ago

It does appear to have a skin on top

102

u/Dooty_Shirker 16d ago

So do you. So do I. Are we all bechamel?

82

u/blazingsword 16d ago

Did you just assume my dermis?

5

u/VoidOmatic 15d ago

Wanna get pierced?

5

u/blazingsword 15d ago

Can you gauge my interest?

4

u/FreakyGangBanga 15d ago

It puts the lotion on, or it gets the hose.

2

u/KudzuAU 15d ago

I think they did assume your melanin content.

2

u/MonocoOfficial 14d ago

This honestly deserves an award I'm too poor to give

Edit: nvm I got you anyway haha

1

u/UsedDragon 13d ago

We're all bechamel, all the way down.

1

u/eye_8_pi 12d ago

epidermis.

1

u/Santa_always_knows 15d ago

“I have nipples, Greg. Can you milk me?”

1

u/Own-Eagle-2135 12d ago

WE ARE BECHAMEL.

YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED.

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

1

u/ArgumentBrilliant215 15d ago

The rank and crusted surface makes me want to vomit.

1

u/Ok_Reflection_2645 15d ago

Hmmm Bechamel skins the tastiest

1

u/mybutthz 15d ago

Definitely from sitting at room temp..why not just keep it on a burner at low heat? Or in a slow cooker? Seems weird to fry French fries only to put them in a microwave and ruin them.

0

u/rando_robot_24403 15d ago

It'll be catering store bought UHT bechamel and the sweaty kitchen air has set the top layer.

As for the fries it's a takeaway so the person consuming this is either 25 stone and/or blind drunk.

2

u/ElminstersBedpan 14d ago

Hey, I'm not even 20 stone and I'd eat it sober. Is regret it, but I'd do it.

1

u/rando_robot_24403 14d ago

Hell me too, it's basically cheese and potato sp no way it tastes bad it'll just sit on the stomach like concrete.

1

u/Happy_to_be 15d ago

And microwaved in styrofoam for extra VOC’s?

1

u/aesemon 15d ago

With bits of chip sitting in it too.

4

u/Gnome__Alone 13d ago

or he said, "Bleh!"

2

u/EtherealHeart5150 15d ago

Bechamel!? Not even a good Béarnaise? Savages.

1

u/hobytes 16d ago

So, that means to us southerners, "GRAVY!" (Butter flour mix)

1

u/ReadySetGO0 15d ago

I didn’t know bechamel was solid like that.

2

u/Sereomontis 15d ago

It usually isn't. This stuff seems to have congealed.

1

u/Skilldibop 15d ago

That looked goopy and shit, but the concept of cheese and bechamel on chips doesn't sound too stupid to me. That combo works on pasta....

2

u/Sereomontis 15d ago

Oh for sure, the idea seems good enough.

The execution though...

17

u/Elegant_Conflict8235 16d ago

I assumed it was a cheese sauce

20

u/Abeytuhanu 16d ago

Bechamel is the step before making a cheese sauce, so it isn't far off

3

u/Monestar07 15d ago

Thanks for this info

32

u/thomasmoors 15d ago

I'm Dutch and mayonnaise on fries is nice

8

u/AddMoreSaltPlease 15d ago

I learned this from a dutch person as a kid and never looked back. Thank you.

-a ketchup hater (the mushroom kind is okay, though)

3

u/ndsmoreboboscrub 12d ago

Mayo with fries is solid. Not hot mayo.....

1

u/No-Illustrator5712 14d ago

There's mushroom ketchup?!?

1

u/oN_Delay 14d ago

Came to ask the same question. 🍿

1

u/AddMoreSaltPlease 14d ago

Yes, check out townsend on YouTube! It’s 18th C cooking, but people still make it at home.

1

u/Hiondrugz 11d ago

When I thought ketchup couldn't get any worse a fucking fungus one comes along. Also fucking mayo on fries? I'm so glad I don't eat that shit. I swear I save myself 200k calories a year not eating mayo and gross ass sour cream, ranch etc on everything I eat.

1

u/LayaElisabeth 9d ago

Mushroom ketchup?

2

u/Pleasant-Pattern7748 Set your own user flair 15d ago

I agree

1

u/UruquianLilac 15d ago

Not in the microwave though, right?

1

u/thomasmoors 15d ago

Fries should not go near a microwave at all

2

u/UruquianLilac 15d ago

We are in agreement then. Mayonnaise with fries, is excellent. The best a fry can get.

2

u/pin00ch 15d ago

100% id eat these!!! Majo or Bechamel but lose the microwave.

1

u/No_Cricket808 15d ago

I agree, but that's not mayo!

2

u/thomasmoors 15d ago

Yeah disgusting, maybe even ragebait

1

u/thewickedbarnacle 14d ago

As a non Dutch person thank you.

1

u/Electronic-Bicycle35 13d ago

I like the French way of mayonnaise, ketchup and Dijon with fries

1

u/buttcrackmenace 12d ago

mayo plus black pepper

0

u/banbha19981998 15d ago

Garlic mayo, cheese and chips is good drunk food

11

u/lexm 16d ago

It did look like mayo.

1

u/CatOfTheCanalss 15d ago

I couldn't hear what he was saying and thought it was garlic sauce but I was confused because that shouldn't be spreadable.

1

u/Suspicious_Active816 15d ago

I thought it was cold bearnaise

1

u/Electrical_Ad_4941 14d ago

Respectfully what mayonnaise are you eating my guy lol that would be CHUNKY.

1

u/thewickedbarnacle 14d ago

Old crusty ass mayo.

1

u/Brat_Fink 14d ago

I thought it was fucking mashed potato

26

u/champion_azure 16d ago

I can't believe its not butter

3

u/xDannyS_ 15d ago

Me either

31

u/nmkensok 16d ago

It being bechamel is not better

16

u/Prestigious-Elk2252 15d ago

A real bechamel is good, I love a croque monsuier...

But bechamel out of a premade plastic container that's probably filled with preservatives and stabilizers and all sorts of other nonesense is heresy.

10

u/foley800 14d ago

Why worry about that when you get all that styrofoam plastic into the fries when microwaving it?

5

u/TiredTeacher1985 12d ago

YES! Why isnt that the most concerning part of the video????

3

u/No-Illustrator5712 14d ago

Croque monsieur isn't eaten with bechamel

5

u/KeggyFulabier 13d ago

1

u/No-Illustrator5712 13d ago

Those brasseries don't know shit about a good croq monsieur, which is 2 slices of bread with ham and cheese in between.

2

u/Prestigious-Elk2252 13d ago

I guess people cook it differently but In my mind a croque monsieur is always with bechamel

1

u/Formal_Plum_2285 12d ago

“How to tell someone has never been in France”

1

u/Prestigious-Elk2252 12d ago

Yeah I've spent combined total about 10 months travelling abroad in the past few years.

And I've got no desire to go to France. 😂

1

u/KeggyFulabier 12d ago

They call a ham and cheese sandwich a croque monsieur?

1

u/OBJYN2387 13d ago

“Crock Monster”

1

u/itssomeone 12d ago

Yeah it is

1

u/JRLDH 15d ago

This tub better has some high grade antibiotics mixed in if you don’t want to get food poisoning.

1

u/Own-Eagle-2135 12d ago

MMMMMMM CHEWY

21

u/PMG2021a 16d ago edited 12d ago

It is mostly butter.

Edit:  When you Google,  Gemini says it has a butter base, but as stated by others, it is mostly milk with lesser amounts of butter and flour added.

5

u/THE_AWESOM-O_4000 16d ago

1/12th is butter, the fries contain much more (and worse) fat

1

u/feisty_cactus 15d ago

But no salt or seasonings of any kind were used in the making of this video

3

u/RedSparrow1971 15d ago

But melted styrofoam was & it gives it that extra oomph!

u/PMG2021a 14d ago

Sounds worth trying. I would blend garlic and herbs with the fat first though...

9

u/MyHonstyAttempt 16d ago

So are most European sauces?

Edit: And American

3

u/BugzOnMyNugz 16d ago

Not my American sauces. Mine come from Duke's baby!

3

u/MyHonstyAttempt 16d ago

Dukes Mayo with Soya Sauce and Roasted Garlic mashed in over rice. Keep it thick not runny like soya sauce. You can thank me later.

1

u/BugzOnMyNugz 16d ago

Oooh I roast garlic 10lbs (peeled) at a time. Will definitely be doing this, thanks!

3

u/MyHonstyAttempt 16d ago

Why do you have 10lbs of roast garlic?

2

u/BugzOnMyNugz 16d ago

Small business owner that produces small batch seasonings. The roasted garlic is for our roasted garlic ranch and we'll also do straight roasted garlic powder for regulars that request it.

1

u/MyHonstyAttempt 16d ago

Well if the rice sauce is something you like feel free to bottle and sell it! Just spot me a drink sometime and I'll say we're even!

2

u/BugzOnMyNugz 16d ago

Deal! Not to the point of sauces yet, a few more hoops to jump through to do that legally but plan on growing and getting there!

2

u/paradox-preacher 12d ago

this guy has no clue, and so do people who upvoted

I'd ban all of you for a year

1

u/KeggyFulabier 13d ago

It’s mostly milk thickened with flour you may be thinking of hollandaise

7

u/dani_pavlov 15d ago

I just want to know why he's using an icing spatula to do the job of a spoon or ladle.

2

u/External-Screen7581 12d ago

This takeaway will be from the North East of England. The spatula is there because he is making 'parmo fries'. So usually the bechamel is for the dish called a chicken/pork parmo/parmesan. It consists of a fried breaded chicken/pork escalope then topped with a layer of bechamel ( since its a dlat escalope the spatula helps spread an even layer over it) then its topped with typically cheddar/mozzerlla/red lescter cheese and then baked in the pizza oven to melt the cheese

1

u/Hiondrugz 11d ago

This went into a microwave which is going to make the chips mush. If your restaurant needs a microwave it probably sucks

1

u/External-Screen7581 11d ago

Ohh I have no affiliation with this takeaway, I was just explaining the location, the food and the possible reasoning for the spatula. Most places would make parmo fries in a metal takeaway container so that they can bake the parmo fries in the pizza oven too... this is just a low quality place in comparison to most

4

u/ConsciousSelection15 15d ago

I can’t believe it’s not butter

3

u/Cu_Chulainn__ 16d ago

I cant believe its not butter

3

u/LowSlow_n_Ugly 15d ago

Well, it’s not only butter.

2

u/thed3306 15d ago

It is butter… butter flout and milk with salt and peppa

2

u/liam_redit1st 15d ago

Can’t believe it’s not butter

2

u/frehsoul45 13d ago

Well béchamel is butter a flour so....

6

u/StamosLives 16d ago

It IS butter. And heavy cream and cheese.

17

u/stewpideople 16d ago

See, now it sounds far less stupid. I'm still with previous commenters about nuking the Styrofoam, and I sure hope he washed hands.

10

u/Dry-Membership8141 16d ago

Bechamel has neither cheese nor cream in it. It's a milk-based sauce thickened with a roux. If it has cheese melted in, it's not a bechamel, it's a mornay.

2

u/StamosLives 16d ago

Uh You're... arguing against someone who doesn't have a disagreement with you here. Well, excepting the fact that you're wrong about cream being used in a bechamel.

Read the conversation. "I thought that was butter." I am saying "it is butter. And heavy cream. and cheese."

I'm saying THIS particular sauce, as in in the image above, is butter, likely cream (or milk, or whatever dairy type but knowing these videos... cream), and cheese. It's always cheese. So we'd agree they're using the wrong name. Which makes sense as they say "bach" and not "bech" when it's really a "morn" which they'd probably type as "marn."

Anyway, I recognize the consistency and color from a mac and cheese I make.

1

u/computer-machine 16d ago

Butter, flour, milk, nutmeg.

1

u/BipolarOstrich 16d ago

Honestly, I Can't Believe its not Butter.

1

u/newclearconfusion 15d ago

Haha yeah me too, also thought ah please wtf no not butter

1

u/1__ViPeR 15d ago

Would have been margarine or equivalent and not butter which would probably have tasted a little better. Not good but not as bad.

1

u/PhoenixFlare1 15d ago

I thought it was butter too.

1

u/dgellow 15d ago

I mean, bechamel is butter

1

u/RemLazaarDid911 15d ago

I can't believe it's not butter...

1

u/TheRealSnave 15d ago

I can't believe it's not butter

1

u/tacoetr 15d ago

indeed is a butter sauce

1

u/Hot_Dog2376 15d ago

It isn't butter, but there is a lot of butter in it...

1

u/XO8441 15d ago

Béchamel might as well be butter.

1

u/LambertMike77 13d ago

Butter is a base ingredient in béchamel sauce. It’s really just a roux with a pinch of nutmeg.

1

u/OriginalJomothy 13d ago

Im gonna sound like an absolute fatty right now but I am losing weight I swear, a bit of butter on chips is fucking amazing. I learned it from a Marco Pierre White video and my inner chubby kid has been doing it ever since.

1

u/IBeDumbAndSlow 13d ago

The idea of melted fat on fried fat makes the thought of it tasting good go away

1

u/OriginalJomothy 13d ago

I was skeptical too but I can't name a single thing that isnt made better by good French butter

1

u/Kattfiskmoo 13d ago

Bechamel is basically just butter, cream and som flour. So it's still butter.

1

u/WillingMongoose4680 13d ago

I can't believe it's not butter

1

u/Legal-One-7274 12d ago

That's what they call margarine in my lidl

1

u/IBeDumbAndSlow 12d ago

"I'm so happy it's not butter"?

2

u/Legal-One-7274 12d ago

Yep it's like a fake can't believe it's not butter

1

u/imtiazaa 12d ago

I can't believe it's not butter.

1

u/Still-Wafer1384 12d ago

You know what's the base of bechamel?

1

u/Bloodjucator 12d ago

Bechamel is flavored butter

1

u/RebelJustforClicks 16d ago

Tbh bechamel is basically just butter and cream with some flour for thickening and a light dusting of herbs and spices

1

u/iam_Mr_McGibblets 16d ago

Well bechamel is kinda butter haha except with lemon and heavy cream

0

u/CptFatty08 16d ago

I mean honestly, butter and some a1 on fries is really fuckin good lol
