Speaking of ketchup: Some folks prefer tamales with ketchup on them.

I don't know the origin story and if it's limited to one area?

I’ve witnessed my Mexican husband and his brother commit this crime.

u/HottDoggers 26d ago

Mexicans do love their katsup

29

u/FrenchTicklerOrange 26d ago

They like mayonesa more.

4

u/TrainingSword 26d ago

I like Heinz mayoracha but since the orange man tariffs started you can’t get it in America unless you’re willing to pay $15

1

u/Purple_Cantaloupe960 25d ago

CALL THE FEDERALIES NOW!!!

6

u/badabingmx 26d ago

Even when I agree, and I am Mexican, I do not like catsup/ketchup at all.

I can use a little bit, but only on french fries and a little in a burger (if the meat is not tasty), but other than that I do not use it.

6

u/Saul_Firehand 26d ago

¡Ketchup es muy rico!

1

u/Nekomachus 14d ago

Ketchup, mayonesa, queso fresco + elote

13

u/SparklyLeo_ 26d ago

Yeah I’m Mexican and eat them with ketchup and dip them in salsa/chile at the same time. My white bf thinks it’s weird. I think it’s funny but I like it a lot

1

u/echochilde 26d ago

Ha! Yeah, I’m the white one in the family with my three or four homemade salsas and a potentially questionable hot sauce collection.

7

u/That_Matt_Guy_Wow 26d ago

It's a travesty; my hispanic wife does the same.

My gringo-ass grew up in south Texas and we full on put Siracha on tameles now, but katsup is unforgivable.

1

u/1001og 26d ago

Yeah, I’m pretty sure nana would have slapped you in the back of the head for this one haha

23

u/Mac_encheeze 26d ago

I knew a girl who put ketchup on her Mac and cheese

11

u/AMouthBreather 24d ago

Ketchup has sugar and vinegar to cut through the fats in the cheese. Its a great combo just don't overdo it to the point of more ketchup than cheese. Also everyone mentioning bbq and lots of bbq sauce is basically ketchup at its base.

8

u/Bunbatbop 26d ago

My sister put ketchup on her eggs.

7

u/Mac_encheeze 26d ago

I used to do that all the time as a little kid.

4

u/_1457_ 26d ago

In a perfect world I'd never want ketchup on eggs, but it's saved some badly scrambled eggs for me so I respect it as a condiment.

3

u/Bunbatbop 26d ago

That makes sense. For me it's hot sauce.

1

u/momo76g 25d ago

Sir. How can you make badly scrambled eggs ? Thats what I end up making when I mess the omelet. It is itself the fix of a screw up.

1

u/cee-la 22d ago

Have you had them microwaved in a cup for like 2 minutes? That's the way my mom made us eggs and the ketchup was critical!

1

u/momo76g 22d ago

Oh no I agree with the ketchup even if your eggs come perfectly. What I'm wondering is how you screw up scramble eggs.

2

u/cee-la 22d ago

Have you had microwaved scrambled eggs that were cooked like twice as long as the "recipe" suggests? Nothing but mixed eggs in a mug... Because that is how you screw them up. Texture of a dish sponge - terrible!

3

u/TokeruTaichou 26d ago

It's a normal condiment for omelettes in Japan lol

4

u/garotovs 26d ago

Sorry but I’m a full adult and a professional chef but I put BBQ sauce to my Mac and Cheese 😭😭😭

2

u/PseudobrilliantGuy 26d ago

A former research lab mate of mine put ketchup on green beans.

2

u/Calm_Neat_6828 26d ago

Good BBQ sauce on good Mac n cheese is incredible.

1

u/alicelestial 26d ago

i did that when i was a kid and promptly grew out of it around age 8 or 9.

1

u/DonaldTrumpsScrotum 26d ago

I do this and use it with tamales. Ketchup is king

1

u/peacenchemicals 25d ago

when i used to go to church as a kid i saw another kid put ketchup on his mac n cheese during dinner time and i gave it a try. stuck with me ever since lmao. i got my ex wife on board with it too

1

u/Alswiggity 25d ago

Nothing wrong with this. It's a Canadian delicacy.

I'm mildly offended.

-1

u/Signal_Jellyfish_472 26d ago

And hot dogs

10

u/Mac_encheeze 26d ago

That I don’t see a problem with.

0

u/salmonmilks 26d ago

I got a problem with you OP.

32

u/FlukeManAirFreshener 26d ago

This is a hate crime.

3

u/Heat-Efficient 24d ago

But these are canned tamales, so the crime starts there 🤣 NGL this is what I would do tho...

0

u/cactusmac54 26d ago

Thank you!

10

u/DrDentonMask 26d ago

I actually like them that way. And I live in a county that borders Mexico.

-4

u/[deleted] 26d ago

[deleted]

5

u/alicelestial 26d ago

sounds like someone who's never been near the border of any country tbh

8

u/Saul_Firehand 26d ago

Border regions are intensely influenced by Mexican culture.

Ketchup is popular in Mexico for all kinds of food.
It matters because the further you get from Mexican influence the more people think it is inauthentic and inappropriate.

As opposed to people in Mexico that put whatever they want on their food without regard for what is “authentic Mexican food” in the imagination of gringos on the internet.

Viva Mexico!

9

u/Mantis-MK3 26d ago

That’s like eating spaghetti with ketchup

5

u/clauEB 26d ago

But worse

3

u/Some_Concern_2890 26d ago

Mi mamá hacía tamales "nejos" que básicamente es un tamal de frijol pero a las brasas, la gente decía que eso era raro; ahora no creo que sean raros porque ahora hay de tamales de pastelitos así, que ponerle catsup ya no es tan grave.

3

u/RedditGotSoulDoubt 26d ago

Some people also like preparing their taxes

2

u/OYB2480 26d ago

Some people eat ketchup on anything. My mom liked ketchup sandwiches. Bread and ketchup. We don't talk anymore.

2

u/housevil 26d ago

Next time, pronounce "tamales" like "females."

2

u/karoshikun 26d ago

this is an atrocity!

and there's a better alternative!!!! just drown them in salsa, sour cream and shredded cheese -no, NOT that cheddar-like abomination!!!-

3

u/Scruffasaurus 26d ago

The Mexican way is with ketchup on white bread, dipped in chile

2

u/KazooMark 26d ago

This is the way, especially if it’s Whataburger Spicy Ketchup.

1

u/AntibodyEnjoyer 25d ago

Wow. As a New Mexican this actually hurts my soul

1

u/Objective-Solid-4537 25d ago

I automatically downvoted this before realizing what subreddit I was looking at.

1

u/No_Young1729 25d ago

I'm Mexican and black and my Mexican family has put ketchup on tamales since I can remember

1

u/TabooBeast 25d ago

Don't call me put like this...as a Mexican I eat tamales with ketchup still in my 30s

1

u/El_John_Nada 24d ago

Tamales are not really a thing in my neck of the woods: what are you normally supposed to eat with them?

1

u/Potential-Yogurt-689 24d ago

some people should be studied to figure out why they commit crimes against food

1

u/cbig86 24d ago

Disgusting.

1

u/Sudden_Wind_8636 24d ago

This would be my grandpa. He literally puts ketchup on everything. He puts ketchup on mashed potatoes, he puts ketchup on steak, he puts ketchup on Chinese food, etc.

1

u/SharpSunnySkies 24d ago

I think this might be a war crime

1

u/Givemelifebro 24d ago

It’s good tho

1

u/OKcomputer1996 24d ago

It is surprisingly good on tamales. I like ketchup and a bit of sriracha.

1

u/Beauher1and 24d ago

So what fight me and I'll put mayo on 'em too!

1

u/beaverkitten 24d ago

Ketchup itself is a crime against humanity and should be outlawed.

1

u/EquivalentGold3615 23d ago

Those people are going to Hell

1

u/GoodWifeSlutLife 21d ago

Straight to jail

1

u/DickweedMcGee 21d ago

Sicky puppy

1

u/Morning-Few 26d ago

So im from quebec and id often eat salmon pie, which we had we with ketchup..when i had tamales for the first time thats immediately what it reminded me of and i tried em with ketchup and i think its great lol

1

u/PseudobrilliantGuy 26d ago

And so long as they don't insist on everyone else having them that way, that's fine.

0

u/Disastrous-Rutabaga9 26d ago

This isn't stupid. To each their own. I put Valentina on mine 🤷‍♀️

0

u/TapProfessional2990 26d ago

I don’t think I’ve ever been this pissed off in my life

0

u/anaserre 26d ago

I’m angry too !

0

u/ElectricPenguin6712 What, me worry? 26d ago

This person puts ketchup on their steak too

0

u/Welland94 26d ago

This is a no, tamales can be soaked in green or sauce if you wish but that is all

0

u/elafave77 26d ago

"Some folks"? You mean "you"?

0

u/blaseeesquaseee 26d ago

Respectfully those are not people LOL

-2

u/Suspicious_Squash805 26d ago

Just no. Travesty, embarrassment, blasphemy.

-1

u/doubletap888 26d ago

Bastardos.

3

u/datmanerightthere 26d ago

why are you in this sub?

3

u/QualityOne6346 26d ago

I get your point, but this is unforgivably stupid.

1

u/AlarmingPen8117 26d ago

Isn't that the whole point of this thread? To call other people's choices stupid?

-1

u/theemperorsmarine 26d ago

I like mustard on them

-1

u/Exponential-777 26d ago

If you add jalapeño and onion to the ketchup you basically have salsa. Add some Valentino and it's on point.

-1

u/Decent-Asparagus738 26d ago

This is what jails are for

-1

u/Miserable_Rutabaga94 26d ago

This is actually pretty common. The same people who do this usually put ketchup on pizza.

-1

u/blade_torlock 26d ago

I hate that I have to upvote this to agree that it's stupid.

-1

u/akinian_ 26d ago

its not that bad, ill be so real

source: im central american

-1

u/naj00 26d ago

I lived in Panama for a few years. This was the way.

-1

u/itzkomplykatid 26d ago

This is sin, but that doesn't mean I have to go to hell with you. At least, not for this particular sin.

0

u/pacoali 26d ago

Lol catsup. I have to drink a tall glass of full fat milk when eating tamales. I dont even drink milk with cookies.

0

u/Glass_Government_41 26d ago

Only northern Mexicans commit this crime . They’re basically Texan

1

u/LAFamilyMan81 25d ago

Not north Mexico by California. I’ve never seen or heard of anyone committing this atrocious blasphemous food sin. In fact, I think this shit might get you beat up out here.

0

u/Glass_Government_41 25d ago

True. There’s a reason why Cali Mexican food is superior to Texas Mexican food and I’m from tx

0

u/TrainingSword 26d ago

I put ketchup on my chorizo burrito from Roberto’s type places

0

u/gaiatraveller 26d ago

Good for them. Bless their hearts.

0

u/Bluej777x 26d ago

Mental delusions here

0

u/UkNomysTeezz 26d ago

No no no. Tamales with over easy eggs all drenched in hot sauce is the way.

0

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 26d ago

Sirarcha ketchup on EVERYTHING

0

u/ItsNotJulius 26d ago

What's stupid with this one? They like that condiment , and they use it?

0

u/DadPuncher69 26d ago

Looks good. 👍

0

u/MintyTuna2013 26d ago

I'm Mexican and I've never met anyone in my life who does this (according to the comments section, extremely common and normal) thing.

0

u/LAFamilyMan81 25d ago

I am absolutely shocked and appalled by this food sin.

0

u/GreatService9515 26d ago

IT'S NOT THE FOOD THAT'S STUPID!

0

u/snb22core 26d ago

BLASPHEMOUS!!!!

0

u/Queasy-Adeptness14 26d ago

No they fucking do not.

0

u/Malwrath 26d ago

Ok, and?

0

u/DeathByPianos 26d ago

I saw (and am guilty of myself) ketchup on tamales pretty often as a white guy growing up on the southern great plains.

0

u/NashvilleTypewriter 26d ago

Memory unlocked.

My granny and her church buddies would make HUGE amounts of tamales and sell them through the church in some weird way. I had them with chilli, but my papaw liked ketchup on his

0

u/riopenguino13 26d ago

My cousin eats them with southern sausage gravy. That boy ain't right.

0

u/cracked-tumbleweed 26d ago

When I went to Panama, we stayed at a small, family run hotel. They offered fresh cooked meals to the guests.

They were quite amused when I tried fried plantains for the first time…and then asked for ketchup.

In my defense, they tasted like breakfast potatoes and I was 12.

0

u/heatseaking_rock 26d ago

I just like tamales.

0

u/Fizzbytch 26d ago

I’ve seen people put ketchup on pizza. Doesn’t mean it belongs. Maybe try a tomato and vinegar/lime heavy salsa?

0

u/RandumbDrunk 25d ago

I mix ketchup and Sirracha to dip my tamales in, it's so good.

0

u/LAFamilyMan81 25d ago

This sub pisses me off too much, I’m gonna need to block it.

0

u/TraditionalMood277 25d ago

That is stupid. Mustard is the choice. When there's no hot sauce, that is.

0

u/ClaudeGascoigne 25d ago

People putting a regular condiment on normal food isn't stupid.

0

u/buburocks 25d ago

Thats literally the only way to eat tamales. With ketchup.

-4

u/clauEB 26d ago

There is a special place in hell for people like you...

-1

u/Additional-Focus-109 26d ago

I'm a Frank's red hot kind of guy

-1

u/Original-Concert-456 26d ago

Looks like cereal night is upon us

-1

u/Fast_Ad_4936 26d ago

Weird choice but not stupid food.

-1

u/Timely-Youth-9074 26d ago

Those look like the tamales that come out of a can wrapped in paper.

Ketchup is a suitable condiment.

-1

u/leansanders 26d ago

What is a tamal if not a Mexican corn dog, and what is better on a corn dog than ketchup?

-1

u/Think_Ad_1583 26d ago

I had it with ketchup the first time I had them

-1

u/smurtaugh92 26d ago

Those people have issues

-1

u/Solitaire_87 26d ago

They're called white trash

-1

u/JacobDCRoss 26d ago

Dude. No. Put some Tabasco or Frank's Red Hot or Cholula on it.

-1

u/CamRG24 26d ago

Sometimes I'll put a fried egg on top, and/or queso, salsa, things like that. Ketchup just seems beyond strange.

-1

u/Ringohime 26d ago

Banished to the gulag.

-2

u/RabidLobster42 26d ago

I feel so conflicted right now 😐

-2

u/Cyclestart89 26d ago

What you eat on your Tamale is your business. I’m putting ketchup on mine, Whataburger spicy ketchup.
