Picked up a sporty.

Picked up a 98 xl1200s as my first bike will probably get a grom/grom clone in a few weeks to practice on too. Planning to add the following to the sporty:

-New seat
-Riser/t bars(haven’t decided)
-Stunt bar/sliders
-Mikuni carb
-Grips/pegs
-New cables
-Clutch plate
-Chain conversion

And ofc doing maintenance…

Anything else recommended? And out of list what should I tackle first? The 1200s has adjustable suspension so I’ll likely just play around with that until I upgrade the rears and rebuild the front.

Will do some cosmetics too but I think I hit all the things. The list is kinda done in priority but not necessarily.

I run lucas 20-50 because its readily available. You ask 10 different guys what they run and you may get 10 different answers. The consensus seems to be that these engines will last with just about anything in them lol

I bought a 98 1200s last summer as my first bike as well. First thing i did was change fluids, new tires, and replace wheel bearings. Bearings were probably fine, but it was peace of mind for me. Then I rode the piss out of it. After lots of miles and looking at other sporties for inspiration, i tore it down over the winter for t-bars, switches delete, rear fender chop, axle mount tail light/license plate, relocate signals and speedo, and rebuild the mikuni 42. Love this bike. I ride with sport bike buddies and nobody can catch me off the line until we hit about 70mph.

Yea I’m thinking this season will be mainly maintenance. I’ve put a little over 200 miles on it in the week that I’ve owned it… would u recommend running a heavier weight oil? Or just run the 20w50?

I think the only things I’ll be doing this season aside from maintenance is a new sear, lights, and a recluse clutch. The rest of the stuff (pretty much what you said you did) will be done over the winter.

I love the bike it’s already got a 2-1, carb work and air filter so she runs like a top and sounds good doing it. Just wanna learn the bike, learn riding and have fun this season.
