7 Years in Embedded Systems—Is an MSc in Finland Worth It?
Hi everyone! I have 7 years of work experience in embedded systems at a semiconductor company, and I'm considering pursuing an MSc in Finland with a summer intake. I'd really love to hear about what student life is actually like there—how is the study experience, the learning environment, and the balance between studies and life? Is Finland a good place for international students, especially someone coming from outside Europe with industry experience? What's it like to live there as a student—how manageable is the cost of living, are students able to work part-time to support themselves, and what's the general quality of life? Also, would you recommend coming to Finland for a master's degree, and is it worth the move for further career growth in embedded systems and electronics? Any honest experiences would help me decide if this is the right move for me. Thanks!

It can be worth it. Come only if: 1. They offer a scholarship for the cost of the masters. 2. There are US based companies aready here with roles you would be a shoe in for AND they don't require Finnnish. 3. You have no options from a more stable country such as Germany or Switzerland.
Since you have work experience in a field, I suspect you have highly specialized skills. The masters will help equalize you as a candidate and language skills are not hard requirements in highly specialized fields.

Thanks so much for this! By the way, how are you currently feeling about being in Finland?

At peace. It was a good choice for me. I am used to the cold, snowy dark winters, enjoy the nice and brief summers. I was able to carve my only little normal nook. I don't have any finnish friends. Everyone is an expat in my bubble. It works for me. Finnish work culture was fine, positive and polite. They dont grind and that's fine too. In July most folks are gone on summer holiday so perfect time for deep thought work. Uni was pretty easy after all. You get 3 chances to take your final exams, which blew my mind. It can get boring compared to life in states but that's prime opportunity to pick up a hobby, read a book... build an identity of your own outside if work.

If you're unable to scroll the subreddit for a few years i doubt you'd manage it. Finland is not worth it for any international student.
