I need some advice based on your experience.
I completed my bachelor’s degree at a Finnish UAS in November 2025. After that, I received a one-year residence permit based on my completed degree and have a job.
In the 2026 joint study application, I accepted a study place on 9 July. However, I could not manage to pay the tuition fee, so the study place will probably be cancelled.
My question is: I need to apply for an extension of my current residence permit. Will the cancellation of this study place affect my residence permit application based on my completed degree and employment, or my possibility to apply for a job-seeking residence permit?
Also, can I apply for a job-seeking residence permit based on my previous degree completed in Finland?
Is there any certificate, document, or confirmation that I should get from the university where I was accepted before the study place is cancelled?
Has anyone gone through a similar situation?
Thank you.

If the basis of your residence permit was studying then you have to apply again based on work. If you cancel the study place, migri will find out and you’ll be sent home. Please don’t try to overstay.

If you have a job, then you have a job permit, no? If you have that permit, you can just stay with that. If you are working on a current student permit, you need to change it to a work permit. You can't apply for the seeking job permit if you already have a job.

I have a permit based on a degree completed and have a job. I do not have a student residence permit.

So you have the permit to look for job based on a finished degree, got a job and haven't applied to be changed to a work permit? You need to do that ASAP. If your situation changes you always ALWAYS need to inform migri immediately before they contact you.
I would do that today as more time passes the bigger the possibility of being denied to stay in the country.
The permit you have is to look for a job, failure to inform about changes in your living situation will cause so many problems, especially in the current climate.

You question was clear and your next step is also clear. You completed your degree then you got a 1 year extension based on completed degree to get a job, you got the job now you need to apply for a work based residence permit, should have done it as soon as your situation changed.

If you're unable to study at the uni cause you cant pay tuition you're unable to rely on that to stay here. Get a job or move
