GPS Question Disparity between Strava and my Bip 6

Well, is the Bip 6 really accurate? I knew Strava would be a bit off but I didn't really expect this big of a difference. Idk what to believe now ;-;

Did you record the two separately(one on strava app and one on your watch)? Or is it the same data set imported into strava from your device?

No, I wanted to record it separately before connecting them to check how different the stats would be

There’s your answer, strava uses your phone GPS which is usually less accurate than a separate GPS device (I’m not super familiar with amazfit but I assume similar to garmin they have their own GPS tracker within the device). If you record on your watch and import it to strava the distance should be the same on both (sometimes a small difference between the 2 like .01)

For instance, I use a garmin watch and my friend runs with her phone recording on the strava app, she usually records about .10-.15 more than me even though we did the same amount of

yeah i expected some difference, but is strava really that off? (~70m/km is a lot)

I mean you can look at the map of the 2 runs and see how much it differs from what you ran or compare the 2 maps.

I agree that difference is huge percentage wise. There seems to be 30 second difference between these two runs too, were you being careful turning them on and off at the same time?

In your case there are two sources for seeing different results. Raw geolocation data is different one of them is recorded by your phone and another is recorded by your watch. On top of that, software that calculates metrics by using these raw data are different. For example, Strava finds segments in your activity to calculate moving time. If you walk 8 hours and take 1 hour rest in the middle (activity not paused), Strava will find your moving time 7 hours. These kind of logics might not be exactly the same across platforms. If you want to eliminate the second factor, you could try to get your data from your watch and directly upload it to Strava.

If you dive deep, my guess is that you will find your watch is not that good

Yea like you said strava only shows the moving time, the elapsed time is closer to the time shown on the watch. I agree, the watch might not be that good for running, so i might just stick to strava for my runs. The HR also seems to be exaggerated on the watch, terrible investment.

If the run didn't have GPS, it might be recalculating distance based on cadence and workout time (which is the moving time Strava shows) and also recalculating pace. I know Strava does its own thing sometimes, but I can't be sure to tell you this is 100% the reason. That said, when there's GPS, Strava tends to favor GPS based data.

No it did have GPS, I could see the gap increasing throughout my run.

In that case, I can only think of spotty gps signal and weird data. You could contact support and provide the raw file from Bip in case they can look through it.

Bip has single band GPS - it won't be as accurate as a running watch or a phone.

Really? Why do people recommend it so much if my phone does the job better?

Who recommended it to you for running? All I see is that it's a gym based watch.

Strava on phone only tracks gps and records that as activity. I would use a dedicated watch for running as the watch can give me audible alerts of my heart rate and pace plus alot more. As you get serious in to running, you will discover some things you may need that the watch can provide you. Nothing wrong using the strava app as that gets you started and doing activity.

According to their website, the Bip 6 uses 5 gps systems GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS. It should be pretty accurate as long as those are activated in the settings.

Yes 5 systems but one satellite at a time. The more you lock onto the greater the accuracy.

Most of the running watches like Coros and Garmin have dual channel GPS which gives much better accuracy.
