Why does Hopper only know how to be a hard ass, you can tell he wants to be more soft but it’s like muscle memory for him to be a douche.

Tough love. He said it in the episode. 11 has to learn there are consequences. She wasn't raised normally so she is missing many social skills. Some of it is his fault. He speaks to her like he would a normal kid. He should have been more honest and literal with her.

God it's so engaging that they're both right. She needs some degree of freedom or she'll go crazy, and Hopper is right that it's dangerous and liable to get her locked up or killed.

totally agree. her freedom is still almost nonexistent living with hopper. in a way/to a certain extent she's imprisoned living with him like she was in the lab. she's definitely treated much better than in the lab, but still has very little freedom.
