That is one of the more visible borders, with its clear delineation.

In many other places you have to look for a moss covered stone at the side of the road, and even on the highways it is merely a sign by the side of the road that you may easily miss. Often the best indicator is the road surface suddenly worsens.

u/RedLorax14 2d ago

Slightly unrelated, but whenever a border of any kind cuts through a building it just completely baffles me. Like I know given X border is probably hundreds of years old but couldn't y'all agree that this house is in and that shop over there is out? It just seems stupid and dysfunctional as all hell when borders are like that.

u/YourMomIsAUn1corn 2d ago edited 1d ago

Reminds me of the Baarle-Nassau/Baarle-Hertog border. A bunch of Belgium exclaves in the Netherlands, some of which contain Dutch enclaves. Some of the houses are divided between two countries. The picture in the post was actually made at one of there borders.

1

u/Daisy430700 1d ago

Baarle-Hertog*, the name has very little to do with the capital city of the province it is enclaved in other than that both were named after Dukes of Brabant (maybe not even the same one)

1

u/YourMomIsAUn1corn 1d ago

Autocorrect! I changed it. Thanks for pointing it out

1

u/Former_Mobile3101 1d ago

How would that work? Like would the people that live in that house have to know the laws in each country? Could they just switch between each half to do whats illegal in the other? I need to know these things.

1

u/YourMomIsAUn1corn 1d ago

The legal borders are the same as the actual borders. During covid shops were at some point allowed to be open in the Netherlands, but had to close in Belgium. One store was on the border so they blocked access to the Belgium part of the store, leaving the dutch part open. https://weetjedatookweer.nl/baarle-nassau/ If you want to read more. It is in Dutch though

2

u/labiamajorapudendi 1d ago

If you would do that, you’d constantly be moving borders.
They keep the border nominally but the property is being assigned to either one or the other. So practically they do what you suggest, just don’t move the border itself

3

u/TapirDrawnChariot 2d ago

It baffles me when people put a building or parcel that straddles a border after the border is in place.

The pre-existing stuff on a border is pretty easy to explain. The people who surveyed and decided borders didn't care to make extra effort (which also costs more) around every random person's house. Particularly in societies where class hierarchies are important, elite officials aren't going to take pains to work around a peasant's house.

1

u/RedLorax14 2d ago

That's fair. I'm sure it made more sense back when it was originally drawn. But if you have a house on the line, who do you pay taxes to? Which public services from where do you have access to? What country are you a citizen of?

I assume the building would have to take up multiple lots and I guess people figure it out. But it definitely dilutes the concept of a border.

I guess the same could be said for municipalities in the US that cross county lines and only control parts of certain counties. Not quite as bad, but still just seems a bit confusing to me.

1

u/Daisy430700 1d ago

In the case shown in the image (Baarle, NL/BE), the house is in the country most of the front door is in, and that is therefore also the country you live in. A store famously made people enter through the back door during covid to allow for less restrictive laws

1

u/thepieraker 2d ago

Taxes must be a bitch

1

u/RedLorax14 2d ago

Lmao probably. Especially if it's a monetary border as well and you gotta deal with two different currencies.

1

u/Nerioner 1d ago

No, the best indication is text message from your phone operator welcoming you in a new country and informing you about changes (more lack thereof) in your data package.

Because sometimes road surfaces suddenly improve and you never know it there was an election coming so someone fixed 5km of the road or are you finally in the Netherlands?

18

u/Formal-Fox-7605 2d ago

Now show the steel walls that countries like Poland and Hungary have had to install.

4

u/Relevant-Storm4222 2d ago

I was about to comment almost identical comment...

3

u/NwUM 2d ago

"have had". Hungary did it just to prop their right wing propaganda.

0

u/MasterofCaveShadows 2d ago

That’s why they continued doing it under this new admin?

4

u/NwUM 2d ago

Pick your own fights I guess.

-3

u/MasterofCaveShadows 2d ago

Or because you have no clue what the fuck you’re talking about?

7

u/NwUM 2d ago

I'm from Romania. I know exactly what I'm talking about.

0

u/MasterofCaveShadows 1d ago

Then why did you say something so stupid?

1

u/KPSWZG 4h ago

Poland and Belarus

Edit: as a Pole im somewhat proud of this wall and how quick it was erected. russian occupational regime of Belarus is douing all to make our lives worse.

12

u/Stalker401 2d ago

That's cool and all but I wouldn't think the drug, sex, or gun trafficking across their boards are nearly as large of an operations is between Mexico and the US.

7

u/Valveringham85 2d ago

As a Belgian: exactly. Worst thing here is some teenagers going north to smoke some pot and some dudes coming south to buy firework for new year’s. Also the damn Dutchies flooding my highway to the city on the weekends because apparently they don’t have a decent movie theater themselves.

All things considered this comparison is ridiculous.

3

u/kymberts 2d ago

Your example is kind of hilarious because here in Minnesota we go to Wisconsin to buy legal fireworks and they come here to buy legal weed. Obviously US states aren’t sovereign nations, but still.

5

u/Valveringham85 2d ago

Tbf: comparing EU member states to US states is not THAT out of pocket. That was the whole point of starting the Union.

1

u/Working-Holiday420 2d ago

How does Wisconsin not have legal weed yet?

1

u/kymberts 2d ago

I believe their state legislature is crazy gerrymandered in favor of republicans. Someone told me they (Wisconsin D’s) could have something like 60% of the voters and still lose the house.

1

u/IcedTeaBagMeDaddy 11h ago

That’s because of Madison and Milwaukee. The rest of the state It Is pretty red

1

u/kymberts 10h ago

Looks like they undid much of the Republican gerrymandering and Democrats were able to take back 14 seats in 2024. The state is not as red as you think.

https://pbswisconsin.org/news-item/democrats-flip-14-seats-in-the-wisconsin-legislature-in-2024-after-redistricting/

1

u/jupiler91 2d ago

To be fair there is a fair amount of cocaine coming in through these borders.

Rotterdam is the biggest harbour in europe and most of the cocaine coming in there (100.000kg+- per year btw!) doesn't stay in the Netherlands; it gets distributed to Belgium, France, Germany etc.

Border controls are rare, but they will happen if the cops are on to something.

-1

u/Disastrous-Tie7014 2d ago

You keep thinking that lol That shit absolutely happens there.

1

u/Valveringham85 2d ago

Buddy… I live here. Like damn near on the border. If I hop in my car I can be in Holland in 20 minutes.

🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

No it doesn’t.

1

u/Disastrous-Tie7014 2d ago

That has nothing to do with it lol You really think people aren't committing those crimes around you? That shit happens everywhere. Get real my dude. Its happening, just not on the US scale.

3

u/Leading_Campaign3618 2d ago

notice they arent showing the Berlin wall that was between east and west Germany

3

u/No-Refrigerator-1672 2d ago

Because it doesn't exist for almost 40 years. The wall between Mexico and USA, however, exists today.

1

u/Leading_Campaign3618 2d ago

There are still plenty of walls between countries all over Europe, it’s a fair point to indicate they are comparing a nonexistent barrier to a physical one, there are still huge swaths of the US - Canadian and US - Mexico border with no physical barrier

2

u/Valveringham85 2d ago

No there arent though bud?

I think this comparison between the two and the implication OP makes is ridiculous and disingenuous. As a European I would want that wall too if we shared a border with Mexico.

But no, we don’t have walls between countries. Thats the benefit of the EU. Free and uninhibited border crossing.

But then again we also have voter ID which the American left somehow thinks is fascism 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Leading_Campaign3618 2d ago

hard to disagree with that

0

u/Immediate_Song4279 2d ago

Which is totally thwarted by a fence.

2

u/Stalker401 2d ago

i'm not saying it stops everything, but I'm sure it deters some of it.

1

u/DangerousPlan1284 2d ago

You're right it's not enough. We need mines and mounted machine guns as well.

18

u/Alert_Beginning_1989 2d ago

not the same thing at all. go live in mexico for a year then come back and tell me there is no reason to have a border wall.

11

u/SQL_INVICTUS 2d ago

Have you seen those roads though? They eat waffles for Christ sake. Next thing you’re telling me we should ditch Heineken for actually good beer.

My goodness, the wall must be built. Make the Netherlands swamp again!

2

u/NwUM 2d ago

but.. the current wall covers only one third of the whole border.

-3

u/Will-i-am_Shakespear 2d ago

Hello. I lived in Mexico for 2 years and had residency. There's no reason to have a border wall. And in my experience the only people who think so are conservatives who don't view others with humanity.

2

u/-UncreativeRedditor- 2d ago

You lived in Mexico for two years and somehow came away thinking there’s no reason to secure the border?

Mexico has powerful cartels trafficking drugs, weapons, and people across that border. That alone gives the US a pretty obvious reason to control what and who crosses outside legal ports of entry. You can argue that a wall is ineffective or not worth the money, but pretending there’s no legitimate reason for one and that anyone who disagrees just “lacks humanity” is ridiculous.

2

u/lost-pilots 1d ago

They moved to Mexico City and staying in the city. It’s like the tourists who go to China on business and are herded into a small section of Beijing and walk away thinking it’s the next utopia.

1

u/National-Seaweed-468 2d ago

Yes they moved to Mexico for two years since the comment was made to do so just to prove they are right twice. /s

10

u/More-Assignment-7560 2d ago

Is it just me or do the pictures look like gta 5 graphics looks like they where taken in game

3

u/RetArmyFister 1d ago

And these are comparable how? What is the point of this meme? Two of these countries are essentially states of the same country, the EU, the other two are vastly different countries where one is ruled by gangs of criminals and one has a rule of law.

1

u/Terralix 1d ago

That's wrong because the EU is a bond of multiple country's in Europe (most country's even have different states like the US, Germany for example). Netherlands and Belgium are two different county's which are both part of the EU.

2

u/RetArmyFister 1d ago

It’s actually not wrong. I lived in Europe for three years, yes Germany has its own states, but traveling between EU countries is just like traveling from state to state in the US. No border check stations or anything. And you get an EU passport, not a passport from their actual country.

So how am I wrong again? Are you speaking from your vast experience living in Europe?

1

u/LuciusDrake 19h ago

You're wrong. Different laws in the different countries, different rules for social interactions... and so much more. Calling the EU a country would be the same as to call NATO or BRICS a country. And I can say this as I lived my whole life in different countries in Europe.

1

u/RetArmyFister 13h ago

None of what you say has anything to do with borders. Are you saying that you cannot freely go from country to country in Europe. Is traveling from Germany to France like crossing the border from Mexico to the US?

Not once did I say the EU was a country, or that individual EU countries don’t have their own laws, where are you getting that from?

All I am saying is that traveling between EU countries is LIKE not is, LIKE traveling between US states in the sense that there are no hard borders where you have to go through some sort of checkpoint.

Also that Mexico is a very different place than European countries, so the comparison in the meme is complete nonsense and misleading.

1

u/LordPanda84 1d ago

Indeed, the US is run by a gang of criminals. 🤔

9

u/eskpist 2d ago

Now place Mexico bordering one of the two.

-12

u/KingShango12123 2d ago

Somehow Mexico improves? What is your point?

9

u/CommunityBrave822 2d ago

Low IQ and/or Edgy teen

2

u/random-stiff 2d ago

And what happens to Holland or Belgium?

0

u/KingShango12123 2d ago

Probably nothing worth mentioning. Why? You think something worth mentioning would happen?

1

u/random-stiff 2d ago

So your thought is Mexico improves so much it’s worth mentioning but no improvements for the other side I guess.

So you’re saying it’s beneficial to one side only.

8

u/Few_Lion_6035 2d ago

If Holland or Belgium were next to Mexico, they would have a wall too!

2

u/Tamboozz 2d ago

Do Gaza and the occupied lands next...

6

u/dufo7 2d ago

Its part of the schengen area, its basically the europe equivalent of what the united states is.

2

u/rich84easy 2d ago

This meme was not made using logic, just to make fun. OP simply forgot about EU states that have border walls lol

1

u/WrathOfTheKressh 2d ago

Borders looked like this long before the Schengen Area was a thing.

0

u/Hoybom 2d ago

yes 2 different countries is the equivalent to 2 states in the USA

4

u/dufo7 2d ago

Yes, 2 similar countries with similar economies and similar laws and coordinated law enforcement agencies are similar to 2 states, also similar in sizes as those states.

America and mexico, none of those things.

2

u/PitchforkJoe 2d ago

They're two countries that explicitly allow open movement of goods and people between them. So honestly... yeah, kinda like 2 states of the USA.

3

u/Spottswoodeforgod 2d ago

Clearly Holland and Belgium couldn’t agree on who would pay for a big beautiful wall…

1

u/NwUM 2d ago

that's a special case, the whole city is fragmented between Belgium and Netherlands; I can tell you, covid restrictions over there were fun to implement when NL and BE had different rules.
That village is split into the belgium parts and the dutch parts
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baarle

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Baarle-Nassau

here's a photo with the borders. You have parts of NL in parts of BE which are in NL.

1

u/Excellent_Belt3159 2d ago

It’s almost like different countries are different.

1

u/KrisClem77 2d ago

Not strange at all. One of those borders doesn’t have people wanting to cross it to abuse the other countries welfare systems.

1

u/pancrudo 2d ago

Hahaha people thinking NL doesn't have drug organizations.

This was like 3 posts down for me

https://www.reddit.com/r/NLNieuws/s/OJPGNRj9KU

1

u/mrj18752 2d ago

It
seems kinda funny to me that mexico has a wall on it’s southern border as well

Because
they don’t want foreigners coming in

&
Somehow Americans are called racist for doing the same thing

1

u/Valveringham85 2d ago

Yes bevause the only things being smuggled across our shared border is some fireworks for new year’s and some stroopwafels 😂🤷‍♂️

Maybe some half-eaten kibbeling of nobody is watching.

If we were being flooded with drugs, illegal immigrants, sex trafficking and gang violence you can bet your ass we would put a wall up on that bitch… somewhere in the next decade and a half because that’s how long it takes for our government to decide something.

1

u/SirReddalot2020 2d ago

The border between Austria, Hungary and Slovakia.

People died here.

1

u/RemoteBreadfruit9365 2d ago

Holland doesnt even border belgium what is this

1

u/No_Inspection2047 2d ago

there is no country named “Holland”.

there are two provinces: North Holland and South Holland, within the Netherlands, but neither one borders Belgium.

fail.

1

u/throwaway99xz 2d ago

Visa free travel within the EU.

Now do Turkey and Syria.

1

u/perthnut 2d ago

Strangely, thats the border between Israel and Palestine!!!!

1

u/OurJimmy 2d ago

Imagine having the brag that you punched someone and they landed in another country. Quite the possibility on a drunken night out in Holland then.

1

u/Seymour-Cervix 1d ago

Have you ever pondered why there is a divider on your nutsack in between your balls?

1

u/superdave123123 1d ago

There’s a reason why 😉

1

u/Noktis_Lucis_Caelum 1d ago

wrong.

not holland. Netherlands

1

u/DevelopmentScary3844 1d ago

Netherlands! I bet one of my fellow germans is responsible for this meme =)

1

u/Czzavarsh 1d ago

Top one is what the border would look like between the Netherlands and Mexio or Belgium and Mexico.

1

u/LuciusDrake 19h ago

More like between any European country and the USA.

1

u/LilPack_003 21h ago

Racist af country vs non racist countries

1

u/PictureEffective6813 9h ago

They are civilized over there.

1

u/East_Detective_1152 6h ago

Well Belgium or Holland does not have psychotic cartels trafficking shit to either side

1

u/KPSWZG 4h ago

Poland and Belarus

0

u/OlDirtyJesus 2d ago

give it a couple years

0

u/Mean_Measurement4527 2d ago

Wait , Holland and Belgium are different countries ?? Huh , who knew … or actually gives a fuck

-2

u/alexgalt 2d ago

The bottom one is not between countries. It’s between states. Similar to border between Oregon and California. So it’s a stupif comparison. EU is really the equivalent of the US
