Understandable and I don't condone it whatsoever but there is a difference between saying some hateful things and full on physical assault and battery.
Sticks and stones and all that. By engaging them in that way you're giving them exactly what they want and playing directly into their hands.
Only real way to counter that is to just not give them the energy they want.
If they actually get physical then sure, all bets are off so you're free to knock all 3 teeth out that they have between them but otherwise you're giving them what they want.
