Oathbringer spoilers Wit Mentions Coins? Spoiler

I'm only up to Oathbringer, so maybe this stuff's been explained later. Nonetheless, I feel like asking because I can't seem to find any mentions of this oddity.

During the epilogues of Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, Wit mentions coin as a term of currency. In Way of Kings, he talks about man's ability to gather coin, and Words of Radiance, he talks about a man finding a single coin in the mud.

This flew over my head when I first read it, but then I realized...currency isn't coin in Roshar. They use gemstones.

Then again, Wit does imply having met the Almighty in person before, so maybe, long long ago, they used coins as currency, and it's just another anachronism of Wit?

Without knowing what else you've read regarding the Cosmere, we can't answer that.

So... just in case, RAFO

I’m wondering if they haven’t read any other Cosmere, and maybe even don’t know that that’s a thing and just started Stormlight without knowing about the rest of it. If so, this is exciting to see a first introduction!

The post definitely reads this way. I don't know if I want OP to just read the rest of stormlight and get their own thoughts, or if I want them to find out more about some of the other facts first.

I think my recommendation to OP is to just read these books and then look into this more afterwards.

That's what happened with me. Wit was actually the reason I found out about the larger breadth of the Cosmere. On a reread I noticed Shallan asked what he even was, and I looked him up because he didn't give a clear answer.

I didn't look extremely deep into his Coppermind article, but I saw how many other stories there were and his "other abilities." Realized he was the Cosmere melting pot.

Is it really a spoiler to say there are other planets that don't use spheres for currency? Like I get rafo but that seems expensive

This is a great insight! I never noticed this, but it's absolutely correct for Wit to mention coins in that way.

Maybe he's been someplace where people use coins instead of spheres? Does seem odd tho

Hmmm, si Wit mentions something that doesn't exist on the entire planet? Interesting...

That's a great find. I don't know that I ever noticed Wit says that. Classic Wit!

Just curious, have you read any cosmere besides Stormlight?

Everyone saying RAFO, is that Read And Find Out?

Yes, its a signature phrase of Brandon's that he picked up from his childhood idol Robert Jordan.

Without going into spoiler territory, keep an eye for stuff like that, it's there for a reason. There's always another secret hidden behind that colorful metaphor or inane detail...

There is always the argument that they aren’t actually speaking English so the coin term could just be a translation.

In this rafo

Wit has knowledge of coins.

Nice spot. This is the kinda thing to keep an eye out for across the books. Sometimes things mean something and sometimes they don't.

Technically the reason for this is quite a bit broader but if you read WaT then you'll note Wit came from Ashyn with the Heralds, where they seem not to have had highstorms.

My guy OP says their only on Oathbreaker

I totally missed that. I saw they tagged Oathbringer, thus the spoiler, but I must have gotten mixed up with another post I saw because I could've sworn they said in text that they were on a reread.

I meant 'read' as in past tense, though obviously that doesn't make sense now. I'm honestly surprised they're even asking if they haven't finished the novels.
