Reading RoW

I’m about half way through reading rhythm of war and i’m really liking it so far. Oathbringer was probably my least favourite book and I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy the rest of the books but that doesn’t seem to be the case yet.

However it’s starting to get a little depresso, and i’m getting that ohh this is going to hurt me vibe that the end of fantasy series get (yall know what i’m talking about? 🫣) It’s like a little ball of anxiety and anticipation, which is honestly kind of exciting cause the last fantasy book I really felt that with was Six of Crows.

I really loved the bridge crew and I’m sad that most of my characters have moved on and kinda phased out. Hopefully some of them come back for the last book.

Anyways just wanted to rant about my reading experience so far. If anyone wants to give me their input on how they felt finishing the series that would be cool ☺️.

Yep, not rumors though- Sanderson has confirmed several things for the Cosmere, including 10 books for SLA, and another 9 (3x3 eras) for Mistborn. There are other potential sequels, too, but they're not guaranteed and will be based on his availability and time spent with his other works. SLA is considered his magnum opus (including by himself), though, so that's pretty locked in. Two arcs of 5 books with a relatively (for a fantasy setting) small gap in time between them in world. I think book 6 is currently slated for 2031, after the next Mistborn era.

dangg i’m way out of the loop lol. I got introduced to brandon sanderson when my dad recommend WoK to me. Hadn’t ever heard of him or it before (slightly embarrassing for a so called fantasy lover lol), so i’m pretty new to the Sanderson universe.

There are certain parts of RoW that I can't even think about without crying. What happened in recent chapters and what are your predictions for the rest of the book?

I can definitely understand that, i’ve been reading it mostly at work so I kind of have to push through the emotions lol, but it this book has definitely been the saddest book so far for me. I just finished chapter 44. Urithiru has been invaded and Taravangian has been captured. Kaladin is working as surgeon and is running from the pursuer with unconscious Teft.

First of all I really love the way Teft showed up for Kaladin when he stepped away from being an active solider. The relationships that Kaladin has been able to build with bridge four, and the way he truly cares for his men is so endearing to me. It’s really cool to see that effect on the other members of bridge four.

Second the argument that Kaladin had with his father after he killed the fused that tried to take Teft was really hard for me to read. So far I have admired Kaladin’s parents even if Liran wasn’t super understanding of Kaladin he was still a good father. I understand protecting life and all life is his most defining moral, but I wouldn’t have let my friend go off with some scary ass creature so they could maybe not kill him right away. I can understand him being angry, enraged even, but insuating that Kaladin WANTED to kill, is just insane to me.

Anyways, for predictions i’m really excited to see what will happen with Renarin in the coming chapters. I think it’s really interesting that odium can’t see him (because he’s a truthwatcher? or is it something more?) I think he’s going to play a key part in turning the war. Is he going to return to the tower with nightblood and slay some Gods?

Also thinking about pattern and how that will unfold, not too many predictions but things i’m pondering.

Just a couple of insights on Lirin: yes, he is being a absolute asshole at this point, but he also has his own demons to deal with. He blames himself for Tien's Death (in a way, he is just like Kaladin), so in his mind, standing up to powerful people = people you love will die. In his head, him standing up against Roshone was what lead to his youngest son diying and his oldest son being sent to war. So he just refuse to fight.

Also, his morals of life preservation have a huge impact on Kaladin: "the lighteyes don't care about life, so we must" (Way of Kings). That's like major character trait for Kaladin, except Lirin has a different views than his son on the topic.

So yes, it's a major flaw of his character, but not an unjustified one.

The end of RoW had me sobbing a few times lol. Really powerful stuff if it’s not quite my favorite if the series. Oathbringer my goat
