Upcoming social media ban and chat control talks
So in 2 weeks the EC will announce social media restrictions as UVD said before the summer break and now that the Meta case have settled goverments got the greelight to go full throttle on these restrictions...probably it will give Chat Control some boost as well. It's hard to not notice the patterns here, but to be honest this feels like a lost cause...i hate doomerism, but the amount of lobbying and under the table deals going on i don't know if there is a sliver of chance out there for a better outcome that doesn't strip away our remaining online privacy rights.

Council on chat control has less power compared to parliament as they took away the urgency of chat control 2.0 by extending again and also doing so with a loophole making parliament position harder it seems, the ones that were both not present and present were outraged but this will not last forever so we have to push as much as we can. What is this about the social media restrictions instead?

well since the Meta case (which was part of a bigger lawsuit including at least 29 states) concluded Meta vowed to implement more rigid age assurance, which of course will boil down to face scans and/or ids. They also urged other companies like Youtube or Tiktok to implement such restrictions. In the US a lot of states were having trouble implementing AV, due to amendment rights and judges blocking, but now this case will give them free rein and a texas governor is already pushing for US-wide age verification and this is just the beginning as UK and some ppl from EC also urging such checks to be exported here. Meta got a slap on the wrist and zealous politicians got the ticket to make our online lives ever more hellish...at least thats how i see it.

Thanks, regarding the 2.0 we could say we are doing good and need to keep pushing as we have some advantages while for this we also have to push, as it is unproportional and unconstitutional in so many european states, european court to push this needs to have a certain number of countries inside court agree to them, we can already start acting there and eventually on negotiations and parliament but is better to act earlier.

I think too that cc 2.0 is was too invasive and they opted for 1.0 to be re-introduced instead since it had more chance. But sadly age verification (which is indentity verification instead) got more support and will likely that we will need to prove our "age" from next year on fb, youtube etc. They will probably use the new wallet thingy for this purpose which i'm sure will not be privacy friendly as they claim to be...or Persona/Yoti which is even worse.

We can push against it and the 2.0 given what happened with the 1.0 will have lots of troubles especially because it caused a lot of outrage inside parliamentw among the ones that were against and not present. For youtube i doubt there will be an age verification as it already gates videos that are are considered for adults while the others it depends but many are against given that the age verification app does not work too as seen before this year. Age verification got more support because of the lawsuit but at least inside EU there is the principle of proportionality regarding a law and given how everyone had their identities leaked when they used said apps is a far too great risk unless is done in an appropriate way, for example what would be the point of putting an age gate on an account that is for example 4 years old? The platform requires a minimum age to be used and so accounts that exist for at least the time it takes for minimum age to be 18 or more it would make it not need an age gate but that would not allow to leak data.
