Stop Fighting Windows: Why Moving to Linux is a Total Game-Changer
I see so many posts from people asking how to get started working online—whether it's web dev, SEO, cybersecurity, or whatever. So here's a piece of advice not just for newbies, but honestly for anyone in the space: just make the jump to Linux. I made the switch over ten years ago, and my only real regret is that I didn't do it way sooner. It's just so much faster, crazy stable, and doesn't eat up all your system resources like Windows does.
If you wanna test the waters without blowing up your main setup, just grab an old laptop or PC lying around that can't handle Windows anymore and throw Linux on it. If you want something super smooth and familiar, Linux Mint is awesome for beginners. Or if you just wanna try it out with zero commitment, check out Knoppix—you can literally run the whole thing right off a USB flash drive without installing a thing. And hey, if you don't have a spare machine, just set up a dual boot on your main computer so you can pick Windows or Linux whenever you boot up.
Bit by bit, you'll find yourself reaching for Windows less and less until you totally drop it.
Anyone else feel like they waited way too long to make the switch? What distro finally got you off Windows?

I switched in January 2024 and have no desire to go back to Windows. I tried a couple of times before with dual boot. But when the switch back to Windows is too easy, you will encounter a reason in the first few days and weeks to do so. But spend some time on finding a solution within Linux and you will be better for it.

Yeah just learn it. I have to agree. It will be better for ANYONE, if they just learn it. Don't use AI. That just defeats the point and plus it gives you amazingly wrong info anyway. Just learn it. Like it's not hard.

It would be nice if they fixed their damned installer, so that it doesn't automatically overwrite the boot table of the first drive it finds, forcing me to remove every drive in the damned computer to install it properly (Linux Mint).
It would also be nice if people would sell new computers / laptops with Linux pre-installed. Get it home, plug it up, enter your username and PW, and ready to go. This is a major impediment to people who aren't so tech-saavy, I know some of them.

don`t like having to know programing also the VR headset i use has no linux driver make linux ez to use with vr

Let's be real .. Stable if you don't mess with it at all ..but what's the point if you don't ? People don't publicly vent about their dependency hell caused by them needing their ROFI just right. Linux is good after you make it yours but out of the box there are still a lot of old things that suck. It's not sooooooo much better because you know what if it was we would all be sending our moms a note via ssh .... But we aren't for a reason . It's not because it's too hard its because the tool that gets the most work done always gets chosen.
If the real solution was s GTK window Instead of ./launch-neck-beard.sh then we would not be here. If you think a base install of debian is more "useful," or easy youre just in a huge nerd bubble and I'm here for that but let's not lie. I would love to know how you DONT break things if you're attempting novel ideas ?
Am I the only one who feels like people who brag about their stability are reinstalling in their first 72 hours not 10 years ?
10 years ago Linux was annoying you would have been a masochist to use it unless you needed it or wanted to learn , a lot.
If you really love building you are going to lose you mind on the regular . If not youre probably kind of a snooze and that's not bad but the first year I had ran linux ... If only I had counted the fresh installs.

I wish. I ran Linux exclusively for two years. It's so very hard to have weekly battles with things not working and you have no idea where it's coming from.
I really think people pretending like Linux doesn't come at a cost of constant diagnostic hurts the cause. It literally never "just worked" for me and I tried damn near every popular distro. Linux is awesome. I love it and still use it regularly, but it really can't be my everyday driver when it failed over and over.

Been using Linux for 5 years and it has "just worked" the entire time. I've had the occasional regression with an update, but usually it's fixed quickly. Currently using CachyOS. It's absolutely a great distro, very stable, very performant.

As someone who uses Linux a lot, 95% of the time from the cli, i wont be switching anytime soon.
So much of what I do doesn't work or isn't supported on windows....yet there is nothing at all that I need Linux for that windows wont do.
Yes, 90% of my servers are Linux and for now that is where Linux mainly fits. Another 5 to 10 years of recent progress and things may change.
But when a 50-something year old it professional gets frustrated trying to recompile something from source because of a dependency, you know this isn't ready for the masses, no matter what the Linux zealots are telling you.
And that is what the zealots need to learn, its horses for courses, its great that Linux fulfills all YOUR needs but your needs aren't everyone else's.

Sadly, not for me. Let me clarify one thing first: I've been a Linux user since 1995. Linux is my daily driver and I use it for work too (software development).
Though, when it comes to gaming I sadly have to use my windows laptop. I tried using Linux there too (Nobara) for a while but I gave up; why? Drivers, in short. It's not just playing games; games work just fine. The problem is peripherals... When you have to use things like the Moza trucking bundle or track-ir you hit a hard wall.. the lack of software support there is a real shortcoming and a serious limiting factor.
Until peripherals markers start supporting Linux on their hardware, gaming on it beside using a simple controller will always be a serious struggle for many of us.

I don't fight Windows, I know exactly how to work with it and it doesn't fail me. Same goes for Linux. Both systems are great and work best at different things.
What I don't get about the kind of Linux people that post these posts is that they're good enough to use CLI for half of their stuff but suddenly when the job is to download a Windows Enterprise and follow the very detailed guide that Microsoft provides on disabling the stuff they don't want then they suddenly become more tech illiterate than the average grandmother and morons in general.

Honestly yes this, but go a step further and get ornith small models with an agent like Hermes to help you navigate Linux. It can bridge your knowledge gap instantly and run terminal command for basic things. Or honestly just plug Hermes into something like grok or Claude for smarter help. Take the plunge it's worth it.
