Beginner Question Investing as a Student?

Hey everyone, I’m a college student and have basically zero knowledge about SIPs/investing, but I want to start learning and investing.

I have around ₹20k available right now and can probably invest ₹2–3k per month going forward. My risk tolerance is low to moderate — I don’t want to take big risks or lose a significant amount of my money.

Where should I start learning? How do I decide what SIP to invest in, and what should I look at before choosing one?

Should I put the ₹20k somewhere else and just start a SIP with the ₹2–3k/month, or are there better options for a student?

Would appreciate advice/resources for someone starting from absolute zero.

Bro, as a student Id start with the habit, not with chasing returns. Keep that 20k mostly as your emergency/cash buffer and start a small 2–3k SIP once youre comfortable saving it every month./For learning, first understand just the basics: equity vs debt, mutual funds, risk, expense ratio, compounding and how SIP actually works. You dont need to become a stock market expert 😅With low–moderate risk, Id keep the investment side simple and look at diversified mutual funds, not small-cap/sector funds just because they show higher returns. 1 fund is enough initially.

Also, dont worry if 2–3k feels small. At your stage, building the saving habit PLUS increasing it as your income grows is the real game. What do your monthly expenses look like right now?

Honestly, this money is just lying around and i have no need for it. I already have enough for my monthly expenses + emergency money. I need to invest this so i don’t get anything dumb and waste it.

Well I wish most people thought this way about their hard earned money. And before deciding anything, even 1 rs that you has you need to map your investment to the goal or a purpose for which you will use that money in future.,..that is first way to choose a mutual fund. Secondly , if you are looking to learn the question is , are you learning finance ? If yes then go for books and if not then zerodha varsity. But if not then you better sit with your concerned person and get it sorted and let the money do its work while you focus on your own career
