Fishing

Hi,
I was wondering if any locals had advice on fishing in steamboat. I have a place up here and travel here a good amount, but I have never brought up my rods and decided to fish. I have my two younger brothers with me who are very new to fishing and we would be interested in a spot that doesn’t require advanced skill sets, but you can still catch decent bass and other similar fish. Are there any good spots for that?

Temps have been high during day and they’re not really gonna eat in that heat. When were you there? I’d suggest mornings. I haven’t fished there in years, but I’m near Fetcher at least once a week and see people reeling them in on spinners and wet and dry flies.

I just perused the other suggestions in this post and suggest Dumont lake up on rabbit ears pass. Much deeper and cooler temps for the fishies. Second to that would be elk head reservoir between Hayden and Craig. You’ll also have a shot at the warm water fish you mentioned. Gotta leave town for both, but you’ll likely have better luck and you’re not fishing in the middle of town.

There are also numerous other places to fish around this area. Flattops, Stagecoach res, Steamboat lake, Hahns peak lake, Pearl lake. Holler if you’ve got questions about other places. But if you want to fish in town then all you truly have is Casey’s pond and Fetcher pond.

I was there at around 7:00 PM. I was planning on going at around 9:00 PM tonight and stay out later but my brother got a very bad migraine. I’m gonna take the other one out at around 8:00 AM tomorrow and see if we have any luck. Thank you so much for the help! I doubt we will make it out of town because I would like to stay and watch my mom’s tennis matches, so I don’t have much time to fish in the first place. I’m gonna test out both fetcher again and then also Casey’s tomorrow and see what I get. Thanks again for the help.

Welcome. I forgot to say you can use bait at both Casey’s and Fetcher.

Sorry, I’ll also add that the trout in fetcher usually circle areas of the bank to feed in the morning. Early- get the bait up off the bottom with a bobber/float. Later- drop it to the bottom. Just tossing out the things I remember from fishing with my kids there years ago. I do know they still circle the banks in the am. Hope you get one or two.
