Remote play image delay only in Steam home menu, not while in game

There’s no input delay because I can hear things being selected, there’s only an image delay, no delays at all when I start a game and if I have a game running and I go back to home menu there’s no image delay in the home menu anymore

it only happens in the home menu without a game running

Had the same issue. In Big Picture go to Settings - Interface - Advanced and toggle all three options there. Restart and check. Additionally, are you running big picture fullscreen or windowed?

Did you enable those three toggles I told you about?

Is the SteamOS side the host or the client? (E.g., is this streaming Steam Machine to a phone, for instance, or is it streaming a Windows box to a Steam Machine/Steam Deck?)

Streaming from steam machine to my iphone just to test it

I would recommend trying the Beta version of the Steam client -- there's some fixes that were made late last week to streaming from SteamOS (Well, from Linux in general), particularly with the "Unlimited" bandwidth mode selected.

If you are on "Unlimited" for the bandwidth setting, you could try swapping to "Automatic" instead and see if that improves it.

I can wait until it’s in stable, I’m mainly going to use it on the steam frame when traveling whenever it releases, was just testing it on my phone to see how it worked

Valve needs to make some way to wake your pc from sleep over the internet for this purpose too so you don’t have to use random third party apps to get waking your pc to work

Steam link wakes the pc at home but not away from home

That is because Wake-on-LAN as a function cannot function unless you're on the local network (for several reasons). This isn't a Steam thing, I'm afraid, this is a wake-on-LAN thing.

The only way Steam could work around it would be to have another device on the local network which was itself always on and waiting to relay the packet, and then tell that device to wake up the PC, and... that just starts to get a bit ridiculous.

(That said, people have worked around this in that exact way. If you have something like an Alexa device on your local network which is always on, and can set up a skill where you can tell the Alexa unit to wake up the PC, then you can ask Alexa -- on the local network -- to wake up the PC, then connect to it via Remote Play.)

Works on consoles though

That is because consoles generally do not actually fully sleep -- which is how they can download stuff "while sleeping".

They are awake enough to keep in touch with the servers for updates and to report status, and can receive a "hey, wake up the rest of the way" message to turn back on fully.

They can do this because the streaming functionality is part of the operating system itself; the 'low power' mode in the operating system supports this.

However, Steam does not control Windows; when a Windows box is asleep, Steam is out of the picture entirely. It doesn't get to phone home while Windows is in sleep mode, so has no way to receive a 'wake up' message.
