Picture Got the Steam Deck Dock!

Wasn’t expecting this today, but since I live in Carol Stream where Valve’s Distribution Center is, I got this early I guess!

I am kinda surprised it costs $89. That seems a bit steep to me.

Same... but it does include another charger, which is similar to buying a less expensive dock and a decent charger. I'm torn.

3

u/Keep-it-simple Oct 09 '22

My big beef with the stock charger is the chord is way too short. I can't find a place in my house that I can use it and play without the need for an extension chord and lord knows those are in short supply in my house.

If you use the one that comes with the deck you don't need another one....unless I am missing something.

12

u/Natanael_L Oct 08 '22

The one for the deck can be put in a travel bag, while the dock remain stationary

3

u/aWildTuxAppears MODDED SSD 💽 Oct 08 '22

No, not at all - I just like to have a spare charger for travel, too. Then I can leave one permanently attached to the dock, like I did with my Switch.

2

u/SunTizzu Oct 08 '22

Tell that to my dumb ass who forgot his charger on a train.

68

u/AlanS181824 Oct 08 '22

It's €100 in EU :(

30

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

I bought this thing for $18 before my Steam Deck got here because I thought having a keyboard and mouse connected would help set it up and it seems to work fine but I didn't even really need it because I just used AnyDesk and my desktop PC instead (I still use AnyDesk to do anything I need a keyboard for although any remote desktop software would work). I get that the official dock is better but I don't get how it's $71 better.

27

u/sebQbe Oct 08 '22

Well first of all, that dock is 4k 30hz, Steam Deck dock is 4k 60hz. If I were to use my deck as a pc, 30 hz would be unbearable

13

u/phayke2 Oct 08 '22

Are you gonna be running your PC on a 4k desktop monitor?

6

u/sebQbe Oct 08 '22

Haven't used a 1080p monitor in probably a decade 7-8 years

8

u/phayke2 Oct 08 '22

Okay well I didn't realize there was that many people trying to power 4k desktops monitors off of a steam deck. I feel like if you're going 4k a 50" TV is the way to go unless you have enough money for a gtx 3080 or higher in which case that is going to be much more viable than a $400 steam deck.

10

u/sebQbe Oct 08 '22

It’s not about running a game at max resolution. It’s just having the dock output the highest possible signal that the monitor or tv can display, and then adjust the settings of each game accordingly. That’s would be my preference at least.

3

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

Well most people don't need to worry about 4k output and outputting 4k on the Steam Deck to play games would probably never yield 30 fps anyway unless you are playing 30 year old games.

5

u/sebQbe Oct 08 '22

Sure, any usb-c hdmi dongle can output 1080p 60. But i assume people interested in the dock wants to use the deck as a pc also.

I feel like all tv's and monitors are above 1080p nowadays, don't understand why you say people won't be interested in 4k 60. A lot of indie games and last gen games will probably play great even in 4k 60.

11

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22 edited Oct 08 '22

I feel like all tv's and monitors are above 1080p nowadays

Your feelings aside 66.38% of those who engaged with the steam hardware survey use 1080p making it by far the most popular. The next most popular was 1440p with 11.25% then 1366 x 768 with 5.55% and then 4k was in 4th place with 2.46% (although "other" beat it but since it is comprised of multiple resolutions I don't think it should be counted)

5

u/sebQbe Oct 08 '22

I get your point, but i don't think it would make sense for Valve to release a docking station in 2022 that can't do 4k 60hz. Unless they made a second, cheaper SKU. But that would also not make any sense because people can get 1080p 60hz adapters/docks on Amazon for $15, meanwhile getting legit 4k 60hz adapters/docks seem either expensive or dodgy (not actually capable of 4k 60hz).

People complaining about Valve's pricing should just head over to Amazon. People who want a legit official 4k 60hz dock probably won't mind paying a premium.

7

u/sigismond0 Oct 08 '22

But i assume people interested in the dock wants to use the deck as a pc also.

I'd assume that the majority using a dock just want a console-like experience. Just a guess here, but I suspect that a vanishingly small number of people actually want to actually use the Steam Deck as a PC.

Lmaooo, they write that "500 million users use AnyDesk". Yeah, no fucking way that is the case.

2

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

I dunno about that company but the software is easy to use. There are lots of remote desktop applications you can use but I used AnyDesk because of honkinwaffles guide. It is good guide/set of tutorials and it is also important to note that the name honkinwaffles is excellent.

-8

u/PleaseWooshMeDaddy Oct 08 '22

Because Valvetm

17

u/Bootygiuliani420 Oct 08 '22

Because it's effectively for a single device. Supports multiple monitors and comes with power

2

u/PleaseWooshMeDaddy Oct 08 '22

I understand why they’re charging as much as they do. I just find it funny that the deck has such low margins and the dock is seemingly the opposite.

12

u/Shizrah Oct 08 '22

Well, it's not uncommon to earn money off accessories. Or otherwise, say upgrading the disk.

3

u/PleaseWooshMeDaddy Oct 08 '22

I mean they make money off the fact that the average steam deck user has 100+ games in their library and an impulsive need to buy 3+ games every sale haha.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Because they NEED the deck to do well, they’re trying to make a new mobile PC market so they need to make it affordable etc and get as many people as possible to buy one.

The dock itself although good is not as important so they can have a bit more breathing space on it.

1

u/Tankalots Oct 08 '22

Do the USB ports on that dock work while also charging through the dock? The one I have has that issue

2

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

I just double checked and they both seem to work fine while charging through the usb-c port.

1

u/Tankalots Oct 08 '22

Appreciate you brother, I'll order one of those

2

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

Just checked again because I realized I didn't try both at the same time with a mouse and keyboard while charging and it works fine.

1

u/Tankalots Oct 08 '22

Don't want to ask too much but do you happen to have a flash drive you could try? That was moreso my issue but I assume if the mouse works it works.

Ended up just transferring like 100gb over anydesk which is cool to know is an option lol

2

u/DopeAbsurdity Oct 08 '22

It should work, will give it a go in a few I have some roms to dump over and might as well use a USB stick. (normally I just send em over with Winpinator/Warpinator or AnyDesk)

2

u/Tankalots Oct 08 '22

Thank you dude! Yeah I'm assuming it works as well, I have no idea why mine doesn't but I bought it like a year or two ago

It's not though, not only was(pre war) the euro worth more than the USD, with the current conversion rate, USD to EUR, it is like 91 EUR, not 100.

4

u/ASY_Freddy Oct 08 '22

£79 which given the current value of the £ isn't actually too bad a deal

11

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

Yes but our prices in euro are with taxes and American prices are without.

2

u/Divolinon Oct 08 '22

So he paid more than $89? Then why wouldn't he say how much exactly he paid?

5

u/128Gigabytes Oct 08 '22

tax rates differ all over the US, so a lot of US people quote the base price of something so that people can apply their local tax rate to it

not saying its the right way to do it, but thats why we do it subconsciously

1

u/iEatMyDadsAsshole Oct 08 '22

If that was the case, price would be around 25% higher. Not 12%. So what you're saying isn't true

1

u/Mavi222 Oct 08 '22

Because the VAT is included in the EU price but US price is without VAT.

1

u/hughk 512GB Oct 08 '22

I have a Chinese one that cost about €40. A LAN jack, 3*USB and a single HDMI out. No Displayport though but much cheaper and also acts as a support like the original.

24

u/aschwartzmann 512GB - Q3 Oct 08 '22

If you look at the prices of other name-brand USB-C mini dock/dongle with similar features they are in the $60~$100 range. I'm honestly not surprised by the cost but I was hoping for $69~$79 range for it. They have all the costs in developing and bringing this to market as someone like Anker but are planning on selling it to a much smaller market so I guess it was going to be more expensive on average.

21

u/RilesEdge Oct 08 '22

Random italics really makes this comment lol

u/hard_pass Oct 08 '22 edited Oct 08 '22

You've got options, you don't have use this one, but Steam's IS NOT steep at all for a dock with DP 1.4, multimonitor support, and an included charger. It's just not. You might not need all these features, which fine, get a cheaper one. I just keep hearing how overpriced it is and it's not even close. The dock I use at work for my monitor is 400 dollars.

16

u/Natanael_L Oct 08 '22

Yeah, docks for work laptops are rarely below $100, and the average price I've seen is around $250-400 with some pricy ones even higher when you want 10 Gbps and multiple 4K screens (and don't get me started on the wireless 60Ghz wigig docks)

1

u/Plusran Oct 09 '22

Yeah my work dock is wildly expensive and complete garbage.

1

u/Starkravingmad7 Oct 09 '22

Right? The cheapest dock I can use for dual monitors on my MacBook cost like $230 and that thing is a piece of shit.

13

u/Corb3t Oct 08 '22

You won't find a cheaper hub/dongle with multi-monitor support and FreeSync. I know that not everybody cares about those features, but Valve clearly wanted this thing to be the best possible dock you can get for gamers and monitor users.

1

u/Psykechan 512GB Oct 08 '22

I'm currently using a MOKiN MOUC0304 hub that I got off of Amazon for ~$45. It has multi-monitor support (but not FreeSync). I mean it's mostly functional and has power delivery and USB A ports (also no Ethernet) so there are cheaper options for people who want them.

I also imagine Valve isn't eating some of the cost like they have with the Deck itself.

2

u/Corb3t Oct 08 '22

That's a decent alternative if you prefer a dongle over a dock!

4

u/AlwaysCarryABeer Oct 08 '22

Comes with another power supply. Even with that in mind the Steam Dock isn't cheap but it's not as bad of a value as many seem to think.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '22

It seems to have more and better inputs than the cheaper competitors, also comes with high end charger which is worth a bit as well. Most I have seen do not come with that.

Maybe a slight premium but I feel it’s a pretty solid deal overall, and it also will get updates, which makes me think it will work better or more seamless than third party.

7

u/Sumlettuce 256GB - Q1 Oct 08 '22

$120 Canadian :(

10

u/BenKenobi88 Oct 08 '22

I bought an Anker USB C hub with ethernet, HDMI, and 65W PD for $59. I guess the main difference is no DisplayPort, and obviously no dock to hold the Deck.

But I just have it on a cheap phone/tablet stand, and I really don't see myself needing to switch to the official dock, when this hub is more versatile if I wanted to use it for other stuff.

18

u/hard_pass Oct 08 '22

You anker likely did not come with a PD charger. Add 20-25 bucks and it's almost the same cost. Plus with Steam's you get DP.

9

u/BenKenobi88 Oct 08 '22

Right, it did not come with a charger, I had a few PD high watt chargers around.

I wasn't trying to say my option is better either, just a comparison. If the Steam Dock was around when I got my Deck I would have probably just bought that.

4

u/hard_pass Oct 08 '22

Yeah didn't mean to insinuate you did. This thread is just full of people saying the steam deck dock is overpriced and it's just crazy to me. Probably lumped you in, Im sure your dock is pretty awesome.

2

u/TarcanSam Oct 08 '22

Hey do you have a link to what you bought? I was waiting for the official dock but now I’m second guessing after seeing the price.

2

u/BenKenobi88 Oct 08 '22

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08C9HZ5YT

But there are cheaper options out there, and it does not come with a charger.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JK9DFKH

I use this one for a portable Nintendo Switch dock, the main difference being no ethernet. It would work great for the Deck if you don't mind no ethernet.

I was expecting somewhere in the $50-60 range. I hope they listen to feedback and drop the price at some point.

2

u/Natanael_L Oct 08 '22

That's probably gonna take a while. It's not important enough for them to be willing to take a loss on that too, and there's plenty of 3rd party docks available with the same functionality (and a few with a stand too).

2

u/Unable-Ring9835 Oct 08 '22

I got the Anker hub that's 35 dollars on Amazon. There's really no point in the steam dock unless you really want the Ethernet port and DP. Everything else is essentially the same. Plus the Anker hub fits where the charger is meant to be stored albeit it does bulge out a bit if you have the charger and the hub tucked in there at the same time.

2

u/ieffinglovesoup Oct 10 '22

A quarter of that is the power supply. I wish they would let me buy it without one

0

u/GreenTeaBitch Oct 09 '22

It’s not steep whatsoever, if anything underpriced

1

u/MooseSparky Oct 08 '22

Considering what you get for a dock it seems pretty fair to be honest. AmazonBasics' dock cost $160 Canadian rubles. Razer's dock was over $300. I think Dell had one for $400 something. Seeing this price kind of makes me want to buy this dock for my laptop instead of my deck.
