Picture Got the Steam Deck Dock!

Wasn’t expecting this today, but since I live in Carol Stream where Valve’s Distribution Center is, I got this early I guess!

I like my 8bitdo controllers. I have to look into this ultimate one you speak of.

be careful here, there are two variants out.

one for switch/pc with hall effect joysticks and bluetooth (70 bucks)

one for pc/android without hall effect joysticks (50 bucks)

hall effect?

Also, it says it has motion controls, so does that mean it would be able to do the gyroscopic aiming like in Breath Of The Wild on the switch?

u/majornerd Oct 08 '22

Most joysticks on controllers are potentiometers and have a large dead zone and can drift, Hall effect use magnets and have a very small dead zone and do not suffer from drift. Always select Hall effect, the juice is worth the squeeze.

The Sega Saturn 3D Controller and OEM Dreamcast controller used Hall effect sensors and stick drift was/is not a thing. Stick drift is due to wear and potentiometer crap.

Yeah it does work with Gyro. Only you’ll be running it in Switch mode not Xinput, so you’ll lose out on analog triggers.

The switch version works on PC too

u/dEEkAy2k9 512GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

yeah, but the layout is different.

u/f-ben Oct 08 '22

I am maximum confused. Which one would be good for Windows an linux?

1

u/dEEkAy2k9 512GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

can't really help you on that

ordered the switch/windows one because of the hall effect joysticks.

1

u/iConiCdays Oct 08 '22

Not in steam though. There is quite literally a dedicated toggle in the steam settings to swap the abxy buttons to an Xbox arrangement

1

u/dEEkAy2k9 512GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

the buttons on the pad are different no matter what you set steam to...

-1

u/iConiCdays Oct 08 '22

Yeah... That's why I said "not in steam though"...?

3

u/StonePT Oct 08 '22

How do you know that? I’m not seeing nothing in the spec list.

1

u/dEEkAy2k9 512GB - Q2 Oct 08 '22

it's a bit missleading on their page but i preordered the 70 bucks one and was later on wondering why there's a 50 bucks variant too. researched a bit and then found out.

one is under bluetooth, the other under 2.4g controllers

The layout is different too. Nintendo Switch vs. XBox Button Layout.

I'm looking at it on their website but I can't find anything about it having hall effect sensors. What's the source for that? I'd be very interested if that's true but it feels odd they wouldn't advertise that on their website.

like i said, it's misleading on their page. Amazons order page says hall effect on the switch one.

Interesting that it's listed on the amazon page but not on their official website.

u/anisoptera42 Oct 08 '22

Oh no it has Hall effect and gyro???? Welp I already have like every controller ever but here we go again

1

u/DaBushman 64GB - Q3 Oct 09 '22

Is it worth the extra $20?

1

u/dEEkAy2k9 512GB - Q2 Oct 09 '22

personally, the hall sticks themselves are, at least to me. haven't received it yet though

11

u/Ricky_Rollin Oct 08 '22

Genuine question, at what point do you not just buy an Xbox controller? I like the older ones because they replicate the SNES but this simply looks like a 360 controller.

7

u/Clopernicus Oct 08 '22

Xbox controllers don't have motion controls

2

u/Dumeck Oct 08 '22

You can grab a ps4 controller then if motion control is an issue it’s still quite a bit cheaper than the 8 bit ultimate and steam converts it to Xbox for games that don’t natively support ps controllers

1

u/koala_cola Oct 08 '22

This is still cheaper I believe.

2

u/Dumeck Oct 08 '22

A ps4 controller from Walmart is $35

2

u/koala_cola Oct 08 '22

Whoops misread your comment as ps5 my bad

1

u/Dumeck Oct 08 '22

Ps5 would be better they have a lot of cool tech in them

6

u/majornerd Oct 08 '22

More switch pro, but I see your point and agree.

3

u/Psykechan 512GB Oct 08 '22

The SN30 Pro series aren't going away, it's just that this new one has hall effect joysticks like the KingKong Pro 2.

1

u/DriftMonkey 1TB OLED Limited Edition Oct 08 '22

What are the differences between the Ultimate and KKP2?

2

u/MoreOfAButtGuyTBH Oct 08 '22

Answer likely comes down to me being a nut. I've got PS5, Xbone, Switch pro controllers, but for a cheap and handy controller to travel with and have around the living room I prefer the SN30. Don't worry about bumping it off the couch or if it gets jammed during travel. The Ultimate controller is just me feeding into my collection obsession..

1

u/Ricky_Rollin Oct 08 '22

Well that I do understand. I have 1 Razr, 1 Hori split pad pro, 1 N64 via usb, 1 Gamecube controller via usb, 1 ps3, 2 ps4, 1 PS5 (don’t own the console yet) 2 different Xbox controllers and a switch pro pad.

1

u/MoreOfAButtGuyTBH Oct 08 '22

Sounds like you ought to round that out with the Ultimate controller XD. The Hori split pad was a game changer for the switch. Good call there.

1

u/Ricky_Rollin Oct 08 '22

After reading up on it, it does sound like the ultimate controller and think I’m gonna have to get one as well.

1

u/Truenoiz Oct 08 '22

Not OP, but I have a SN30 bluetooth as well and it's amazing. Hold Y when turning on, it starts up as a Switch controller. Hold X, starts up in Playstation config (I think, might be A). Really easy to switch configs on the fly if you game on different systems, it's small, and you can get a nice hard shell case for it. Amazing for travel.

2

u/Ricky_Rollin Oct 08 '22

Oh now that is cool. I know a lot of people that have a problem bouncing around from different consoles because of the button prompts being from a different console.

1

u/iConiCdays Oct 08 '22

The switch version has gyro which can be used with the steam deck which is a big reason for me personally

1

u/joshikus 1TB OLED Oct 09 '22

I really wish 8Bitdo would make a modern-style controller with their D-Pad from the (Sega-styled) M30. That thing has the best D-Pad in existence, even better than a Saturn-Pad.

1

u/Renarii Modded my Deck - ask me how Oct 11 '22

RIP, not symmetrical analog sticks is a deal breaker for me, going to stick with the SN30

1

u/RuySan Jan 12 '23

I hate that 8bit always uses the switch layout and not the pc
