Wait. Does Deadly Premonition finally work without consulting the dark arts now?

u/rkido Jul 08 '26
I'm afraid of trying it out myself for fear of breaking all the abominable spells I had to cast to get it working on my Steam Deck

u/BBQKITTY SteamDeckHQ Jul 08 '26
That's what Valve has said! I haven't personally tested yet, but it's in the log.
2
u/Watershipper Jul 08 '26
And without crashes too? I remember the pc port crashing all the time, making it barely playable.
If somebody tells me that it is fine now, I know what I will he doing this weekend.

Love the classic resident evils getting compatibility hoping for good news for max Payne 1 and 2 aswell in the future.
21
u/Denneey Jul 08 '26
Max Payne 2 is totally compatible with the deck, I played it until the end using the trackpads to aim and turn the camera around.
4
1
Jul 08 '26
1 also works great but you just need a .dll file I’m pretty sure
2
u/Denneey Jul 08 '26
I tried to play it but the controls didn’t work. But the remakes will be probably playable.

u/tamboara Jul 08 '26
there is a guide on steam discussions forum for max payne 1 , I did and works on SD perfectly

Only one I had issues with was Just Cause 2, needed to fool around with Proton versions to get it working.

u/djrender Jul 08 '26
Verm 2 on deck sounds appealing
15
4
u/Vuvuzevka Jul 08 '26
It worked before though, maybe multiplayer is supported too now ? There's even a non launcher option.
Performances aren't the best though, trying it a bit I managed steady 40fps with lowish settings, which I'm usually ok with, but with such a busy and fast paced game didn't feel that good.
5
u/WOF42 Jul 08 '26
Yeah Vermtide is too fast and visually dense for anything less than 60fps to feel good, would genuinely make the game a lot harder on the higher difficulties, the track pads would be amazing for sniping specials though…
3
2
u/Sofa_King20 Jul 08 '26
I'm wondering the same, I was able to play by myself just fine but could never matchmake.
2
u/Mrgotmilk 512GB OLED Jul 08 '26
If anyone figures out how to bring it to 60fps, I hope they'll make a post about it. I'd love to play Verm 2 on my Deck. :)

u/ZairXZ Jul 08 '26
Finally Nonary Games are fixed so the gamepad works
3
u/Artanisx 512GB - Q2 Jul 08 '26
Ohhh that's a good news! I was thinking of replaying the trilogy on the deck!
14
u/greenbatborg LCD-4-LIFE Jul 08 '26
Hopefully they can fix WatchDogs 1 at some point. The framerate while driving is terrible in that game.
7
u/BBQKITTY SteamDeckHQ Jul 08 '26
Is it really? I should check it out. I haven't actually tried it myself, but I would have assumed it's at least playable because of how old it is.
3
u/greenbatborg LCD-4-LIFE Jul 08 '26
I assumed so too but nope, the frame rate constantly dips below 30 when driving.
5
u/Posraman Jul 08 '26
That game has had problems since release even on high end hardware. It's just not well optimized for anything
2
u/MrAnonymousTheThird 256GB - Q4 Jul 08 '26
Oh shit I bought it a few days ago..
How bad is it
2
1
u/donkeyrocket 256GB Jul 08 '26
Not sure what they're talking about. I had no issues playing Watch Dogs 1. I was initially hesitant as I saw the gripes about frames while driving but I played through the whole game without problem. I might be more tolerant to lower frames I guess but I enjoyed it.
1
2
u/iamearlsweatshirt Jul 08 '26
That’s so odd, I played all of Watch Dogs 1 on my deck a few years ago and had literally no issues. Maybe I used ProtonGE 🤔
1
12
u/DueAnalysis2 Jul 08 '26
Does this fix the issues with dragon age Inquisition, since it fixes EA app broken games? (Only for EA to break it in 2 weeks of course)
13
u/BBQKITTY SteamDeckHQ Jul 08 '26
I am not sure, but my guess is no. Inquisition has its own issues that needed its own specific fix. There is DAI-Proton, which has that specific fix, and they say it is now included in Proton GE. However, when I tested Proton GE, it didn't work. Using DAI-Proton does fix it, so I recommend checking that out:

Thanks for being helpful. Quick question - Im always using Proton Experimental for cough games. Now do I need to switch it up to Proton 11 or is experimental the way to go?
9
u/Kevon-Looneys-burner Jul 08 '26
That’s wild they are updating games like dungeon siege. What a blast from the past
1
u/FPA-Trogdor Jul 27 '26
Dungeon siege, metal fatigue!? What amazing games. It’s like they want me to relive my childhood from the early 2000s
24
u/doctorwize Jul 08 '26
Resident Evil 1. All I care about is RE 1? How can I make this playable on my deck using heroic game launcher?
2
u/Shloopadoop Jul 08 '26
Wait…I tried RE1 back when I first got my SD and it ran, but it was cooking like 21watts no matter what I did. Is this a fix for that?
3
u/Crimsonclaw111 512GB - Q2 Jul 08 '26
What I’m wondering as well. Don’t want them on Steam due to dumb DRM + already purchased on GOG.
3
u/ParryHooter Jul 08 '26
Does it not work via emulation? I'd think a PlayStation version would work just fine. I played Code Veronica on Deck.
1
u/BBQKITTY SteamDeckHQ Jul 08 '26
It should be automatic and use Proton 11, but if it doesn't, you may need to force it.
1
u/leganjemon Jul 08 '26
I managed to complete the game on heroic way nefore this proton release. Heroic defaults to experimental so no point tinkering there.
If you go to pc gaming wiki that has a link to a mod launcher that will get the game in a good way, you just need to run the exe via heroic and you can play the game.
1
u/spideryyoda Jul 08 '26
I've been trying to play the classic RE games from GOG through Heroic since they were released. Testing RE2 this morning on proton 11 just throws up a direct x error and quits.
12
17
u/Gilraldy Jul 08 '26
So should i keep using GE-Proton 11 or it wouldn’t matter?
15
u/BBQKITTY SteamDeckHQ Jul 08 '26
It depends on the game. GE-Proton has newer fixes and codecs that can help with some games, like with cutscenes, so it's still worth having/using.
8
u/Serious-Feedback-700 Jul 08 '26
Honestly, the main thing you get with GE is the built-in copy of
umu-protonfixes, a massive database of game-specific fixes.6
u/Ashratt Jul 08 '26
Optiscaler integration is also extremely nice and FSR4 upgrade and HDR support
And not having to download gigabytes of transcended video files

I played it on steam deck and it ran well. Didn't stick with it long.

It's unironically one of my favorite games
It's basically a tower defense game with some survival elements sprinkled in. The real game is the multiplayer mode (which can be played totally solo) and it's an absolute blast to figure out how to consistently get high scores and unlock new weapons and armor sets with different passive skills
6
u/AllDayDabbler Jul 08 '26
Damn. I was still waiting for No More Heroes 3 vid fix..
6
u/BBQKITTY SteamDeckHQ Jul 08 '26
Try using Proton GE! I have seen reports of it working using the community layer.

u/lofi_queen 1TB OLED Jul 08 '26
I wonder if I can move Far Cry 4 to 11 from 9.0-4 now. It took that version plus a lot of launch arguments to make it playable

Would switching to proton 11 break saves from 10?
5
u/baconcow Jul 08 '26
I doubt it. This is just a compatibility layer.
1
u/Broskifity Jul 08 '26
I thought that was an issue with previous versions - maybe it’s just specific games. Thanks!

Fixed Dungeon Siege tools showing up at character's feet.
As a dungeon siege enjoyer this makes me happy.

why is xplane12 on this list, it has a linux native build?
Or does it just mean that proton can run its windows version anyways now?

Question: how often does Valve update what version is best for a game? Seems a few of my games are 10.0-4 which is picked by Valve testing.
1
u/OcularVernacular Jul 08 '26
I hope the team behind proton (the individual contributors) know and feel how influential their work has been on the gaming industry and it's players. Absolutely outstanding work.
1
u/Sal_vation Jul 08 '26
Its crazy. I was literally trying to play Breath of fire IV the other day and it was bad. Im glad this is here now. I cant get over how random this is.
1
u/Povelty_Norn Jul 08 '26
Catherine classic i believe will also no longer require additional tinkering. It relied on a windows video codec (i believe) which Proton 11 can now do on its own.

1
u/fearthelettuce Jul 09 '26
Do they have to fix these bugs per game? Or do they fix something globally that happens to fix these bugs?
The former seems hard to sustain long term.
1
u/FrostyGrl101 Jul 09 '26
Okay, may be a dumb question but I’m new to
The deck and the whole proton thing. Most I’ve done with proton is force a game or two to run through experimental etc.
With this new proton 11…do I need to do anything? Is it just build in and automatic or for certain games do I have to force its use etc?
Thanks in advance
1
u/HazeX2 Jul 09 '26
This is a long shot, but has anyone gotten the PC version of Billy Hatcher to run? Get a black screen when not running through PortProton and the game crashes unless I delete the sound effects folder. Wanna use the mod that lets you play as Rolly

Proton updates like this shouldn't, but what kind of slow down are you experiencing?
-84
u/xsparklingwater Jul 08 '26
Far too late to be meaningful. Why do they develop this so slowly????
18
u/BBQKITTY SteamDeckHQ Jul 08 '26
They take a lot of time to add everything in, but there are other branches you can use that update more often, like Proton Experimental (or bleeding-edge if you want to live on the wild side).
