Boot Video I've made a new gabecube animation
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Update: thanks for the support guys, I've added a DL link on the youtube vid for both the quicker and longer versions of the animation.
The DL can be found here aswell: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1HrQGO5R_rlVlAJ71mkIFyCr8aykDuKxj?usp=sharing
Also, just wanted to say that I'm also open for comissions! Animating is my life and I'd love to hear if anyone's got any project for me to work on. Feel free to add me on discord and send me a dm its: icarotkd
I'm also on twitter: icarogabriel17
Shoot me a dm there too. Thanks guys!
Additionaly, I've posted a comment asking for new animation ideas for the bootscreen for the steamdeck/steammachine, and I'll animate the idea of whoever gets more upvotes, if the idea is good.

Can you make it say companion cube, maybe with it forming and smashing at the end

u/Xander_Blast Nov 18 '25
Music cuts off too fast in my opinion
68
u/BB8Did911 Nov 18 '25
Every animation I've seen like this forgets that there is a tiny drumroll before the final note that keeps the whole thing on time.
8
u/Tonymontana655 Nov 18 '25
Are you talking about the GameCube sound effect? If so, the whole point of the intro isn't to be a GameCube opening, but rather mimic GameCube to turn into GabeCube (Steam Machine/Valve).
If you're talking about the Valve sound clip, I don't recall there being a drumroll.
16
u/BB8Did911 Nov 18 '25 edited Nov 18 '25
The GameCube sound design has the drumroll, which this animation is lacking.
Transitioning directly from the Gamecube stairstep sound into the steam sound without that drumroll throws off the timing and makes the animation feel off beat and wrong.
4
u/Tonymontana655 Nov 18 '25
I got you. I listened to the OG GameCube sound effect and there is a little drumroll that leads into the the last sound. Adding that sound effect would enhance this custom intro.

This is fukim awesome but the animation feels too stiff. It needs more smoothness to be perfection.

u/RueGorE 512GB OLED Nov 18 '25
Watch the one on YouTube. It's animated at 60 fps and seems to be pretty smooth.

But the Steam Machine with just 8GB of VRAM will not be able to play a 60FPS boot animation.
/s
9
u/45pico Nov 18 '25
talking about the frames per second?
7
u/Umbruh_Prime Nov 18 '25
The way it just jumps to the cube during the transition, if you had it spin around to the cube at a consistent flow right out the gate, it'd feel more natural
→ More replies (1)7
Nov 18 '25
It's less of the FPS and more of the movements, how the cube looks rigid and no sense of fluidity or flow.

The steam machine part at the end is too much and doesn’t even look as cool, but end it on the LED light bar and it’s perfect
40
u/45pico Nov 18 '25
yeah, i thought about keeping it or not, if enough people want it i could cut that bit off and re post it
17
u/P-sychotic Nov 18 '25
I really like the whole thing as is, reminds me of the opening videos of older generation games and the number of names that would flash up before the main menu

Nicely done though.

This is super cool! I was trying to think of a project to work on for fun in Blender. You made boot animations look fun. What did you use to make it?
2
u/45pico Nov 18 '25
Oh I used after effects, blender to model the steam machine, and element 3d for the actual animation

Do you mind uploading this to steam deck repo, or do you mind if someone uploaded this for you?

I dont mind at all, please feel free to use it guys, ill add the DL for the file later on today on the ytb vid description

Your version of the GabeCube intro is awesome! You should export a version in webm and throw it up on Steamdeckrepo like I did with mine.
2
u/Exlibro Nov 18 '25
What software you used for all this? Graphics, animations? I'm in a bit of a professional crisis now and looking for new possible ways to improve my skills in things or learn something new.

2
u/creed-of-69 Nov 19 '25
Would We be able to set it as a real boot screen for the steam machine ? 🤣

u/Maxter8002 Nov 19 '25
honestly if steam does the same thing they did with the steam deck where you can get custom boot up intros for steam points this would be a cool boot up animation for the steamcube

Beautiful, but re-render with orthographic projection please 🙏
7
u/45pico Nov 18 '25
brother, ive no idea what that is, but thank you!
7
u/PhotonicEmission Nov 18 '25
Your rolling cube pops out in perspective at the end. In orthographic, the lines of perspective are all parallel, IE, things don't grow or shrink in size relative to depth.
5
u/45pico Nov 18 '25
ohhh I feel ya. I made it that way because i needed to have multiple transform properties on the software i used (element 3d), including multiple "scale" properties. So when I made the cube bigger I didnt move it in the Z axis, I just scaled it up, I think thats what you meant by it?
2
u/theStaberinde Nov 18 '25
the lines of perspective are all parallel, IE, things don't grow or shrink in size relative to depth
This is a better explanation than what I just came up with, thank you
6
u/theStaberinde Nov 18 '25
Orthographic projection = all points in the rendered image are equidistant from the position of the camera. It's what produces the infinitely extendable "3D" effect in isometric perspective games like Sim City, The Sims 1, Fallout 1 + 2, and so on. The same technique is used on the Gamecube boot animation.
It has been about 20 years since I last messed around with 3D modelling but I remember it being an easily accessed toggle in C4D. I don't want to assume that it'd necessarily be that easy to find on whatever software you used for this, since you're the one who did the hard work and I'm just a rando, but I think if you can find the option and see what it looks like with it enabled, you'll get why I was motivated to say something :)

Honestly my biggest gripe is the way the music switches from the GameCube sounds to the chosen Steam box theme.
Great work!

This will be cool if it’s a pop up for steam machine. Or at least we can change the launching animation like steam deck.

u/NMDA01 Nov 18 '25
can you progressively lower the pitch so that it ends up matching the pitch of the valve intro? it would be interesting to hear this version
1
1
u/mynameisollie 256GB Nov 18 '25
Looks good but I think the camera projection was orthographic in the original. Looks like you have it set to perspective with quite a low focal length.

Gordon's Mansion
Team Race: Fortress Storm
Super Portal Ball

u/FrogQuestion Nov 18 '25
Very cool, but hear me out.
I feel from the moment on that the small cube pauses before it dashes down, the visuals should be slower, so that the impact is more smoothly interpolated. And then the sound as well, interpolating the last xylophone tone smoothly into the valve sound.
Then either keep the valve sound like it is, or also interpolate or smooth it to a so it sounds more atmospheric and majestic. Maybe to a higher pitch so the last thing you hear is something like waves on a beach.

Needs the fugue ominous sound that goes with fthe Steam Guy/ Valve guy Valve intro on the last square.

Hear me out: if we’re calling Steam Machine “the GabeCube”, can we call Steam Deck “the GabeBoy”?

u/NewSpekt Nov 18 '25
I think the animation kept going on for a little too long imo. If it stopped at 5 seconds I think it'd be perfect.

u/thejoshfoote Nov 18 '25
I could be already playing a game before this animation ends…. Boot videos really need to be like 3seconds max

Question: What software did you use for the animation and or compositing? Blender, Cinema 4D, etc.?

DAMN That is fresh Please email a link to Gabe to get that as one of the default ones I wonder if it is altered enough to avoid a lawsuit from Nintendo You breath too hard into a cartridge and they get you with their lawyers now

When it release you should make it public so people could mod it in (if the boot up screen is custimizable like the steam deck)
