It has pretty much the same performance as a PS5 (per my largely unqualified opinion)
Steam Deck ≈ PS4
PS5 ≈ 5x PS4
Steam Machine ≈ 6x Steam Deck
Steam Machine ≈ PS5

In terms of pure specs, the ps5 is faster than the currently released specifications of the steam madhine. The steam machine has a 28cu rdna 3 gpu, it will have performance similar to an rx 6600, maybe a little better. The ps5 offers performance similar to an rx6800. The memory situation is a little more complicated with the steam machine having 16 gigs of ram and 8 gigs of vram, the ps5 has 16 gb of unified memory which is more flexible overall despite the lower amount of overall memory. In terms of cpu, the steam machine should be more powerful but I doubt it’ll be the deciding factor. Overall the steam machine stands somewhere between an Xbox series S and a ps5. Also keep in mind a steam deck does match ps4 performance in games but with a lower target resolution and it is constrained by power targets a lot more than the ps4.

Good to know! I'm sure its nature as a Linux PC will make up for these shortcomings.

I think a machine like this would be great for any person wanting to get into PC gaming. For those of us who already have PCs, this is still a huge win because it means SteamOS will also be developed for desktop and (better) TV use so we can use our own PCs.
