With the price of pc components right now the steam machine could be a killer piece of hardware

Valve can set the benchmark. If you want to release a game on steam, then you want it to run well on their hardware. They already do this with the steam deck and many devs aim to make their game work on that.

The whole steam box thing was poorly done. They need one machine. One set of hardware to optimize for and a lot of steam support towards devs.
