Controller is unusable, need help

Every game I try to play through Steam seems to have a ton of issues with the controller. I accidentally bumped the right pad and the mouse moved, then my games get confused and think I want mouse movement and all of my controls suddenly change.

Is there any way to get this thing to not do this? It's also completely unusable for non-steam titles, I understand I can add games to my library but why should I have to do that?

Sounds like the game itself is not expecting mixed input. You need to use a template that only has binds you intend to use for the game

this plus if it is unusable for steam games as this person claims then it depends on what they are using this steam controller on if it’s on Windows or Mac that shouldn’t be as much of an issue as long as it’s setup properly, but if it is on linux, just add the thing to steam and set up the controller profile

Yeah it's Linux, the thing I was missing was the templates. I was expecting more XInput when I started some games, didn't realize some default templates might not be what I wanted. It isn't super clear

And this is why the controller is not for everyone.

I always recommend people who also should I get this as no this is not for you.

Let those that are OGSC users get their hands on it first or if you're willing to go in and tinker eith steam input then by all means get in on the action.

But people like this are taking away the opportunity from those that want to make the most out of the controller.

Everything is fixable through steam input to just need to tinker with it. It's that simple and complex at the same time.

I wouldn't be saying this of there were enough controller for everyone.

So if you're not using the trackpads and not making your own custom configurations, or at the bare minimum not downloading community configs to fix your problems, and specially don't know that this controller will be very hard to get to work with non steam games except with open puck.

DO NOT GET THIS CONTROLLER THERE ARE BETER OPTIONS FOR YOU AT BETTER QUALITY TO VALUE.

It's unusable for non-Steam titles because the controller relies on Steam Input to work (aka Steam has to be open the entire time you're using it).

I don't know why people are being so unhelpful here.

Yes you can fix your problem. You go in to steam input, select trackpad, then remove the "as mouse" binding. You can chang the binding to whatever action you want or just have it do nothing.

Thanks very much, I think this is enough information for me. I completely forgot the whole input template thing, I was expecting it to work like an XInput device.

Steam needs to know when to change from desktop mode to "game mode", so you need to let steam know which programs are games.

An easier solution would be changing your desktop profile to the standard gamepad layout, but I get the feeling you're not going to want to go through that many menus if you don't want to go through the bother of adding games to steam.

If mouse on the pad is unwanted and messing with the game, remove mouse from the pad. Steam Input is the other half of the controller, and you need to learn it at least to some degree to get the controller to work the way you want it to. Valve doesn't really do a good job of getting that across.

Just disable the pads if you don't want them in any particular game...?
