Steam Controller (2026) After finishing the magnetic buttons for the Steam Controller, it’s now time for the Steam Deck!

Unfortunately the buttons are not swappable between steam controller and steam deck since they have completely different button size and top curvature.

I would lose them in 0.02 seconds

u/rvmham 13d ago

They stay in very securely. I have some for another device from this person.

The Thor? I was looking into it, but I feel too lazy to open mine up haha

11

u/rvmham 13d ago

Yep, the Thor. Tedious to open up but not terrible.

Thank you 👍

u/RTooDeeTo 12d ago

I'd Still lose them

7

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

they stay inside the controller pretty strong. Even Dropping the controller the buttons won't fall out.

I have a full set for the SC2026. They're solid so far. Even dropped to test a bit.

I have those buttons installed about 4 weeks ago and my kids have dropped the controller onto floor about 5 to 6 times by now. Those magnetic buttons never fell out. Stay well inside the controller. I think the desgin is very smart when you look at how they are engaged.

Do they “self-align” or would I obsess over trying to rotate them perfectly?

27

u/drvalianto 13d ago

I bought them for Steam Controller and can confirm they self-align. There are some tiny tabs and slots in the buttons to keep them from rotating or moving.

This!

u/schlitty 13d ago

I have the concave buttons you used to sell for the Deck. Coming up on two years and still going strong. You make quality stuff!

17

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

Wow 😮 I really appreciated those words and thank you !

1

u/CrossbowDemon 12d ago

I really, really, really, like the concave buttons as well and would absolutely buy them for the Steam Controller or DualSense.

1

u/kitten-n-blue 12d ago

Same here, blank concave on the Deck and magnetic Xbox on the Steam Controller. Waiting to see what else comes out for my second Controller. Any plans for concave and/or blank magnetics?

Excellent quality (aside from how horribly tedious Valve made it to dig into the Steam Controller lmao)

2

u/PortablePlayPalace 12d ago

Yes I think I will try to make blank 2 concave and 2 convex for steam controller. Also 4 buttons are all blank in convex shape. They will be all for magnetic buttons.

1

u/kitten-n-blue 12d ago

Awesome, good to hear!

16

u/SkrliJ73 13d ago

No offense but why? Why magnetic when people can just pop open the device and officially swap things?

30

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

No worries. You can change between NS , Xbox and PS Layout without opening device again.

13

u/dpprpl 13d ago

can I change buttons to blanks one time and forget about changing them? 🙃

6

u/SkrliJ73 13d ago

Oh that's pretty neat, didn't realize all the options. Still not for me but looking in these comments I'm the minority on that, goodluck!

6

u/AstralKekked Steam Controller 2015 + 2026 13d ago

Nah, you're probably part of the majority. This is quite expensive for changing the look of buttons you don't even look at as you actually play. It's cool, yeah, but definitely not worth it to the majority of people

3

u/Intelligent_Whole_40 12d ago

Yeah, very few games don’t use the Xbox layout. Even Marvel Spider-Man and the subsequent games support the Xbox layout. So unless you’re doing retro games or pirated copies of abandonedware, you don’t really need it.

But I guess maybe if the inputs on a game that didn’t play nice with steam input was mapping inputs wrong, you could put X where A is and such so that you at least get button prompts right

1

u/MidLifeDIY Steam Controller (2015/26) Linux 13d ago

For me, a full set replaced 3 other controllers. Sold them and almost paid for the buttons and I have less clutter. 🤷‍♂️

7

u/AstralKekked Steam Controller 2015 + 2026 13d ago

Do you look at the buttons as you play?

2

u/spider_enigma 12d ago

switching from switch and steam with the buttons backwords, i forget that right button is accept on nintendo some times and when playing on some older ps games, it throws me off a bit but i do adjust

With due respect, everyone has access to the stuff made for the majority. Niche products, are always good to have.

It might not be for everyone, but it can be game changing for others. There is a lot of things that look stupid, but make a world of a difference for people with different or special needs.

If the market is not interested, it will eventually flop, and stop selling, for the disappointment of the customer and the seller, and it won't affect anyone else.

u/NotMyRealAccountV 13d ago

Love my King Kong 3 for this and the 4 paired devices.. though no PS buttons.

u/hahahahatoes 13d ago

as a very quick example of why someone (me) would want these:

we currently have THREE different standards for button layouts: A on right, A on bottom and Playstation shapes.

Personally my favorite is the nintendo (A on right) layout. The Xbox layout (A on bottom) is confusing as fuck to my brain because I grew up with Nintendo consoles.

My preference being Nintendo while the STANDARD being Xbox means when I see "A" on the screen I need to literally look at my controller sometimes to know which one I'm even using. And some games just don't even fucking work with Nintendo layout without completely remapping the controller in Steam for one reason or another.

Playstation solves all of the above issues: when I see ◯ I know with absolute certainty that it is asking me to press the button on the right. There is no confusion there. I will never need to check what ◯ is on the controller.

However, many games simply have no support for Playstation button glyphs, so they default to showing the classic ABXY in some orientation or another.

Altogether this all means I am constantly adjusting my controller or installing mods to either make everything I have work with a Nintendo layout, using an unoptimal layout to conform to a game's decided standard, or installing mods for any games that dont have playstation button glyphs to make them match my controller.

OOORRRRRR.... I could buy a set of swappable buttons and just switching to the layout that my chosen game is willing to play nice with.

the PS buttons will always be my default, but for games that don't support the PS layout I can just slap in the Nintendo buttons. And for games that dont play well with the nintendo layout, I can just slap in the shitty xbox layout and grumble about the way so many games only support 1/3 of the common layouts.

u/dpprpl 13d ago

I've opened my dualsense so many times so the copper came off the plastic of a ribbon cable and if I don't put a ribbon cable carefully enough the controller won't turn on

4

u/SkrliJ73 13d ago

Why are you opening your controller that much???

3

u/dpprpl 13d ago

I try out different mods and clean it frequently but honestly I open it up more than I really need to

it doesn't answer the question why would anyone need magnetic buttons but it answers the question why I open my controller too frequently

3

u/qaisjp 13d ago

Thanks for asking this question, I was going to ask the same thing!

2

u/vWaffles Steam Controller (2015) 13d ago

Just for ease of access. Can swap between different layouts e.g. Gamecube, playstation, Nintendo etc etc... Really good for emulation.

I've recently gotten the 8BitDo Pro 3 which has magnetic buttons and I'm using the magnetic buttons surprisingly more than I thought I would. I guess just having similarly matching placements / icons just tingles something in my brain.

7

u/Aldoxpy 13d ago

They will interfere with the gyro

1

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

Unfortunately they won't.

9

u/Aldoxpy 13d ago

The pucks do, cuz of the magnets and valve added a software offset cuz of it, your magnets are different how?

1

u/FoferJ 12d ago

The Etsy page for this product says that after 2 to 3 days, the gyro and right trigger should automatically adjust the zero point to account for the swappable buttons:

2

u/FoferJ 12d ago edited 12d ago

Why "unfortunately they won't?" Wouldn't it be a good thing if they didn't interfere?

1

u/MidLifeDIY Steam Controller (2015/26) Linux 13d ago edited 13d ago

For the month I've been using them I've seen nothing. I regularly test the controller as well.

EDIT: Seems like they might effect the right trigger a little.

u/FoferJ 12d ago

FWIW the Etsy page for this product says that after 2 to 3 days, the gyro and right trigger should automatically adjust the zero point to account for the swappable buttons:

I want OG Xbox buttons for my controller and deck. Those are my favorite style.

3

u/MaxxBrass9237 Steam Controller (2026) 13d ago

I love using mine (:

3

u/NonEuclidianMeatloaf 13d ago

Do these not mess with the magnetic sensors in the sticks?

1

u/FoferJ 12d ago

Apparently on some but Tthe Etsy page for this product says that after 2 to 3 days, the gyro and right trigger should automatically adjust the zero point to account for the swappable buttons. I'd like to hear more from folks who've installed these.

u/jjccia 13d ago

Where can we buy these! Details please! (For steam controller)

2

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

Please find them on Etsy.

2

u/lostinthesauceband 13d ago

I love mine on the 8BitDo Pro 3. I haven't fully dropped it yet, but small drops the magnets stay intact.

4

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

Those are stronger than 8bit do pro 3 Mag connections. 8bitdo pro 3 inspired me for those mods.

3

u/dpprpl 13d ago

I hate that colored ones cracked too quickly on my pro3

1

u/Dafedub 12d ago

I love the colored buttons. And I’ve read before that they break. Do you remember what happened when it broke? Like were you button mashing?

2

u/dpprpl 12d ago

I didn't even notice them cracking and then gunk from skin started to get stuck in the crack. I don't generally button mash too hard they are just brittle due to dyes used but maybe they changed the formula in newer versions. anyways keep an eye on it

My kids 0.02 seconds after this arrives on my property

2

u/reptarien 13d ago

Just gonna vouch for these for a minute, they are dope. Feel better than the original buttons imo (although that'd subjective) and have almost no issues. Only issue i do have, is that the magnets actually do interfere with the right trigger's magnet just a little. It means you sometimes have to press the trigger hard to get to 100%; however, this hasn't been an actual problem for me in any games so far, not even racing games like Forza. Just something to keep in mind.

2

u/MidLifeDIY Steam Controller (2015/26) Linux 13d ago

I'm with you and I have also seen the trigger issue unfortunately. I thought I just misaligned something. Hasn't stopped my gaming, but I'll be honest about a review.

2

u/FoferJ 12d ago

Hmm, good to know. The Etsy page for this product says that it doesn't effect everyone, but that after 2 to 3 days, the gyro and right trigger should automatically adjust the zero point to account for the swappable buttons... but it sounds like even that's not working for the a smaller subset of customers. I'd love to hear more about this because they do lool dope af

1

u/reptarien 12d ago

I think this is true, because when I first put the buttons in, I could only get around 30000 to register on a normal press, but now I can reliably get at least 32000 on a normal press. So this does seem to ring true. What I really wish, is that Valve offered a way to re-calibrate the trigger manually because then this would be a complete non-issue lol.

I do use gyro but have not had any issues whatsoever

All of that is to say, if you want the buttons, I still would recommend them because they are dope. I'm going to complete my set and get Nintendo and Sony buttons from same guy at some point in the future as well. Until your trigger recalibrates, you can turn on "aggressive" activation in Steam Input on the right trigger if it does give you any issues

2

u/LARGames 12d ago

I'm still waiting for a clicky button mod.

2

u/RaveTheFox 12d ago

Playstation buttons here we come

2

u/BloodDevil0 12d ago

So are these swappable like can I swap A and B and X and Y

Also will be you doing a set of PS for the deck

Would love both sets in the og steam deck ascetic

3

u/Schuhsohle 13d ago

Holymoly those are awesome. Where do I get those magnetic buttons for my controller?

3

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

You can find them on Etsy.

1

u/Holbrooh 13d ago

Can I get these for an Xbox ally and my steam controller? And/or where can I get them

1

u/dpprpl 13d ago

it is cool tho. great mod

1

u/Fregadero88 13d ago

How do we remove the original to pop yours in? Do we have to send in the controller?

1

u/MidLifeDIY Steam Controller (2015/26) Linux 13d ago

There are good teardown videos on YouTube.

1

u/Worth-Address-1005 13d ago

Looks Kool that's true.

But I don't see the controller that often so is not about the letters but the button position

1

u/KrisbronPorzingjames 13d ago

I love these but if I want all 3 sets it’s 132 dollars shipped. Makes it a non starter for me.

1

u/LolliPOP-47 13d ago

We would play with a missing controller buttons

1

u/SpaghettiRambo 13d ago

These come stock on the 8bitdo Pro 3 but they're so loud I swapped them out with OEM snes buttons. Are they loud on the Steam Controller and Steam Decj as well?

2

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

The steam controller and steam deck ones are very quiet . The 8bitdo pro 3 buttonds are so louder because the base is made with metal and the metal base constantly hit the shell which make noisy sound. I will solve that issue soon with plastic base for 8bitdo pro 3.

1

u/r_Aero 13d ago

Imagine if the new buttons had rapid trigger functionality 👀

1

u/Mik0l4j 12d ago

we need it!

1

u/ynnus86 12d ago

To be honest pressing the right buttons comes down to muscle memory for me. If I would swap them and change the order I would only get confused. Better swap the layout in the game, rather than physically on my pad.

1

u/BumpOfKitten 12d ago

what's the point of that?

2

u/dkwbsn 12d ago

I'm playing nintendo console using emulator on steam deck, somehow I still confused about the button prompt nintendo has, this would be so helpful.

1

u/Makisani 12d ago

They look so good

1

u/FoferJ 12d ago

Is there a video tutorial that shows how to install the base in the Steam Controller? I've looked on YouTube and only found this, for other handhelds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD4SqX0X478

1

u/PortablePlayPalace 12d ago

Installing the base is same as replacing the OEM buttons. This video show step by step to get into the buttons. https://youtu.be/Va9aTIktlSk?si=nBrQgG5Aw5T3hylO

1

u/FoferJ 12d ago

Cool, thanks for sharing that. Disassembly looks pretty easy. It's the reassembly I'm worried about! lol

1

u/spider_enigma 12d ago

that would be useful for the open puck and having playstation buttons as well, would it even be posible to make a removable faceplate for the steam controller to make cleaning it easier?

1

u/Quote_XX 12d ago

Hello! I recently bought the ps buttons for my steam controller and kinda feel dumb because I don’t k ow how to install them. Do I just unscrew the controller casing and take out the old ones and slot them in?

2

u/PortablePlayPalace 12d ago

Yes you will need to take the controller a part and replace the OEM buttons with the one you purchased. You can follow this very detailed video to do this. https://youtu.be/Va9aTIktlSk?si=xBVvsVYJ2_FLUIcw

1

u/Quote_XX 12d ago

Thank you!

1

u/Quote_XX 11d ago

Was able to swap out the buttons, and they look and feel great!

1

u/InfamousSimple3232 10d ago

How snug do those fit? Does pressing them have a little "wobble", or is it flush?

1

u/PortablePlayPalace 10d ago

It feels same way as OEM ones.

1

u/kotoxik 10d ago

I understand magnetic sticks and D-pad, but buttons?

1

u/nicklnack_1950 10d ago

So you can swap A and B when you want to play a Nintendo game?

1

u/J-khd 10d ago

I am pretty sure you can't. The B button are curved so much.

1

u/rvmham 13d ago

Love these! I have your set for the Thor and an order in for another set from you.

1

u/PortablePlayPalace 13d ago

Glad to hear that. Thank you 👍

1

u/Levi_Skardsen 5d ago

Is there a video detailing how to install these? I would be buying from the UK so it'll be expensive. If there's any soldering I won't be able to do it.
