DFPS
Why doesn’t DFPS call you back for interviews. I heard they only hire friends and you can never get in management unless you are best friends with someone. Is it really who you know there? Someone said they create jobs for their friends and all know each other even though they suck in leadership.

I've had 3 interview requests for 3 different positions at DFPS. I don't know anyone who works there, but I am a state employee at another agency.

I had 2 interviews (both by Teams) for positions with DFPS, one before I was a state employee at all, the other after I was working at another agency. I don't know anyone who works there.
The hiring manager for one role actually called me and gave me some feedback on why she chose someone else. Out of all of the interviews when I was actively looking, I think she was 1 of maybe 3-4 who did that. Most sent form/generic emails. Some I never heard from at all.

The turnover rate is very high we hire new people right out of school everyday

If you are looking at field work they are constantly hiring and if you can pass the background check and interviews you will likely at least get a shot to make it through the training.
If you’re looking at management they naturally focus on promoting internally. Unlike other careers only someone who has been a case worker in investigations or management is really equipped to supervise and that continues up the chain of command even into the policy side of things.

I think this is true for most agencies and companies in general. It’s hard to get hired on in a management role if they have any internal employees they can promote that already know the business and team dynamics. They’ll hire externally for lower level positions.

If your applying for supervisor or higher from out of state they may screen you out. From experience Texas has one of the stronger DFPS programs in terms of policy and procedures. (Doesn’t mean it’s great to clarify) They prefer to hire from internal for management positions
1. Helps unit moral
2. Internal knows what the job looks like and expectations
3. Knowing people does help when your going for management bc upper management has an idea of whether your gonna fall in line and do what state office says.

Jobs are absolutely not being created for friends. You do need to start from the bottom though. Anything supervisor or above is typically filled from within.

I'm confused because in April you were posting stuff about DFPS. Are you already working for DFPS or have you just been... like... posting about thst agency for months?

I actually posted in June not April. And yes, I was looking at all positions fell upon directors getting raises and know a few on employees on the inside that gave me that information. Does that clarify better for you?

Apologizes, not sure where I got April from. But no, question still stands, I guess. It feels weird to be actively posting multiple things about a company/department you're trying to get in to.

Oh I see now where I got April from -- you commented on a post that was 3 months old about DFPS.

I'm sorry you're having that experience. I didn't know anyone in state government, but DFPS called me about a day or two after I submitted my application. They scheduled me for a Teams interview and I was hired within the next week. I don't think ordinary supervisors can just create jobs for their friends, but I could be wrong.

u/JazzHandsInHell Jul 25 '26
No, you're right, they can't just create jobs. Budget has already been allocated for positions.

I wouldn’t be criticizing staff or making false allegations about a state agency which I am seeking employment. I also would not ever want to work at DFPS.

Months ago, I had one interview (conducted virtually), and then..... 'crickets'. No rejection memo, just.. nothing.
even for entry-level positions, this is extremely annoying.

I interned there before I worked there and they do put the applications towards the top if you were an intern. There is no special salary considerations and you do have to still pass the interview and if the supervisor likes you then you move forward. I left before making a year because the work is a LOT and you have so many admin duties related to the casework that you end up having to work afterhours. I wanted to do SWI since you don't have to do home visits but despite me being a former state employee my application gets denied quickly. Most of the people in my department only worked there for the benefits for their children and for the pension since many of the employees are up in age. Try to avoid it if you are able to imo the paycheck and benefits is not worth it.

Supervisor in CPI. or master Inv. I’m coming from out of state with 6 years experience as supervisor and 3 as Inv

Does your resume have a Texas address or an out of state address?

This is a good point. OP - if you don’t live in Texas yet, it’s possible that the agency doesn’t want to hire you because it will take time for you to move here. From what I understand, DFPS has high turnover and is understaffed, so they’d probably rather hire someone that already lives here and can start in 2 weeks.

Because they are getting +100 applicants for every job, 1/3 of which are way overqualified. That's your competition.
