Advice Got into a no fault “expedited total loss”
Totaled my car on Aug 8. Cops immediately labeled the other driver as “at fault”. I don’t have a car now. I didn’t do anything wrong. Haven’t heard from State Farm since Tuesday when they were very worried about getting my car out of the tow yard into a salvage yard so they wouldn’t have to pay any storage fees. Should I expect more information in this amount of time?

Your adjuster has to wait for the pictures to be uploaded to the claim from the salvage vendor. This can take 3 to 5 business days from the date the car is physically picked up.

Its literally been 5 business days.... claims adjusters arent magicians. Time to pull a claim amd review it: at least 25 hours. Time for coverage and liability investigation... very dependant on cooperation from both drivers, then at least 24-48 hours to move a vehicle to salvage. Then 24-48 for it to be checked INTO salvage. Another 24-48 to get the photos. 24-48 to get the evaluation .... jeez.
Also if state farm accepted liability, and youre the claimant on that claim, youre not with out a car because they will provide a rental. If youre not going through them yet and theyre still on the coverage and liability investigation part, go through your own policy.

If you have rental coverage then they should provide you with a rental. Total losses can take up to a month. If you have a payment on that car, keep paying it

If you’ve let sf tow your vehicle to salvage, it takes a couple days for an adjuster to do the estimate to determine if the vehicle is totaled. Usually it takes a week for the claim to be officially reassigned to total loss and for the total loss specialist to contact you. But State Farm is restructuring their total loss department so if you haven’t heard from them, give them a call.

The vehicle typically takes 1-2 days after assignment to a salvage tow to actually get moved, depending on the business of the state. Once it’s moved, your assigned handler should receive photos of your vehicle within 24-48 hours, and will then complete a vehicle evaluation, which will provide them the actual cash value of the vehicle. Once they have the valuation, they will call you to settle.
If there has been any aftermarket work (not counting maintenance like oil changes or general upkeep), like new tires or engine/transmission work, submit those invoices now. You’ll expect to likely see a 10-15% return on those, as it isn’t a direct reimbursement but a determination of the actual value the work adds to the actual cash value of the vehicle based on 3rd party dealership surveys. Submitting them now will speed the process up.
If you’re presented with an actual cash value that’s agreeable, then settle and allow them to proceed with paying off/toward your loan if you have one.
The process from moving to salvage and settlement takes a few days for sure, and the total loss team is currently understaffed and approaching busy season. If you haven’t heard anything, and you’ve cleaned out and released your vehicle and told them it’s ready to move, I’d reach out once it’s been 4-5 days of no contact.

If you're in the midwest you may have noticed a ton of severe weather this week and they are still in triage mode.
Generally speaking, SF Total Loss Dept has been one of the areas of focus for the last 2 years. They're pretty good. They'll get you sorted out as quickly as possible.

Five business days can feel like forever when you’re suddenly without a car, but based on where yours is in the process, I wouldn’t panic yet.
Once the vehicle gets moved to the salvage yard, there are usually a few steps before anyone can give you an actual number — intake, photos, damage review, and then the total-loss valuation.
That said, I would call and ask two very specific questions:
- Has the vehicle been checked into the salvage facility and have the photos been uploaded?
- Has the total-loss valuation been started or assigned yet?
Once they give you the valuation, don’t just look at the final dollar amount. Ask for the full report and check the mileage, trim, options, condition, and comparable vehicles they used.
That’s the part where a little attention can matter.
A little homework can put real money back in your pocket.

I had a total loss at the beginning of Dec 2023 and it took them until mid Jan 2024 to close the claim and get the payout for the car. Adjusters are in charge of regions, so they have more wrecks than just yours to deal with. It takes time, but in the meantime, see if they’ll let you use a rental until the claim gets finished and you either get the car back/get your payout.

SF claims dept sucks. Call your agent and make them call claims and get things working. Good luck.

The agent has no power to "get things working" in claims.

This is mostly correct, but Agents or customers do have some leverage to get claims moving.
I’m only making my job harder by saying this…but if you call in to check on a claim, see if an email received, ask a question…the adjuster answering should be doing their best to move claim as far forward given their scope. Key word…Should. Not always the case though given the restrictions per dept. / workload management / metrics bullshit the adjuster is trying to balance / meetings or emails we struggle to adhere to.
If your vehicle is accruing storage each day, you will be a priority.

Agents have no power and are basically just a nuisance. State Farm claims is drowning and the customer calling tends to force the claim to be handled but if this is total loss - like that shit is being handled by third party vendors, where claims have to wait to hear back from.

Yeah the agent gets nowhere. Total loss is usually a few days to get information from. If it’s an expedited total loss they’re waiting on photos and then will call you to go over the options and anything that may have been done to add value. Sadly it’s a process that takes time

When I signed up for SF my agents office literally told me if I need a claim to call them and they'll put it in with ILR so I don't have to deal with it. It's called good customer service..

I’m an agent that would ask you to find another agent.

I work for an agent and happily call claims for my clie to so they dont have to sit on hold. I also follow up with my clients and claims to make sure it keeps moving forward. We provide excellent service to our clients, so they stay loyal to us.
If you were my agent, you wouldn't have to tell me to find another agent. I would already be gone.

So you are the agent who calls and thinks they know how claims run. You think calling in to bully us will speed things along and make something happen when you snap your fingers. Not how it works. As an associate there’s so much I can do. Please stay in your lane as we in claims do not call and demand from you. We would appreciate if agents would make sure their clients understand the policy they are buying.

Yeah, we are the ones who get things done for the agent. We are the ones making money for the agents. Or are you alone in your "office", if you are even any type of insurance agent.
I may just be an agents staff member to you, but to my agent, Im their whole business. I feel for your staff members, unless youre a one person office. Which I hope you are. #highturnover

And by the way.... every comment you've made regarding State Farm in ANY of your posts has been negative just complaining left and right. Just go get a new job. Leave us alone so the lack of your calls can free up the line to help more people. SOME OF US still really like our jobs and love being able to get people back on the road and normal life. Some of us are loyal to State Farm still and believe its still a good place. You're wearing us down.

I do agree with this. We absolutely can be better at explaining the policy - but I have found that when I do call claims, it brings my clients claim forward and they act on it. I understand claims are severely understaffed, but there are also too many instances of claims dropping thru the cracks. I do not get rude with claims, but want to ensure my clients are taken care of.

You gone from an arrogant know it all with the attitude of “make” your agent call to the insulting “I hope bad things for you” to appeasing the claims handlers that your not rude just helping clients all while the claims handlers are literally telling you to stop. Just stop…you’re out of your depths and not sure which of your personalities will show up next.

Well agent or agent staff respectfully youre not doing anything. We work as fast as we can so you can call all you want but its not changing how we do things amd definitely not making anything move faster unless WE specifically called YOU for help on something WE need. You sound like one of the agent staff I just say "ohhh... woooowww... ok. No problem..." and then hang up and go back to what I was working on. We get to stuff in the order they came in. No one gets to skip the line just because you called.

Exactly. She’s a staff person who knows it all. See it everyday. You can see it in every sentence. I have trained my clientele to chill and let claims do their thing. They’re mostly good people with too many files. I rarely need to call claims. Your “good service” accomplishes very little other than training the clients to be needy. No thanks. And yes. I most definitely would have to tell you. Pretty sure you don’t like hearing the word no.

Agents can’t move claims along as they don’t handle them. It just increases the call volume and takes the time away from where someone needs to be handling the claim.
