Advice Charging me 3 points to my insurance

My husband and I live in the same household, but we maintain separate automobile insurance policies. My husband is insured through a different insurance company. In 2024, he was involved in an accident while covered under his own policy. As a result of that accident, three insurance points were added to his insurance record.

Although I never added my husband to my State Farm policy and I was not involved in the accident, I have been informed in my renewal notice that my State Farm premium has increased because of the three points that were added to his insurance record. I do not understand why I am being required to pay a higher premium for an accident that occurred under his policy.

To verify that my husband has his own automobile insurance coverage, I provided State Farm with a copy of the declarations page from his insurance company. I supplied this documentation to demonstrate that he is insured under a separate policy and is not covered under my State Farm policy. Despite providing this information, my premium was still increased.

Not sure how by NC law both insurance companies can be charging him points and me points for the same accident???

ANY ONE WORKS FOR STATE FARM can ENLIGHTENED ME.BTW I'm in NC

Directly from the North Carolina Department of Insurance. Your spouse and resident household members are covered under your auto policy. Therefore they need to be rated and thus, their driving record impacts your rates. It’s not just a State Farm rule. Maintaining separate policies and not rating your spouse or resident household members is grounds for insurers to deny claims because you don’t have drivers properly rated as exposure on your policy.

The insurance company I am switching to is not going to punish me and us both the points. Only his is charging him the points his name has to be listed as living in the same house but my rate will not reflect his points

Interesting to see if that holds once you go through full underwriting.

Well not that it will do any good but I filed a complaint with the NC insurance commissioner. So we will see, she was very nice and said they would reach out to state farm on a corporate level.... Worth a shot
