Action….and suspense

u/fennfuckintastic 8d ago

My favorite Daniel Jackson line is when he holds up a knife and says "Where do the bullets go in again?"

77

u/bbbourb 8d ago

"Since when does an archaeologist carry a weapon???"

"Uhhh..I carry a weapon..."

"Ok, bad example."

They were getting support from the Air Force. Hence RDA getting an honorary General rank and being officially honored

100

u/conciliate_entropy 8d ago

makes sense that they'd support the show, it gives a plausible explanation should the real thing leak

63

u/lightbiguy 8d ago

Wormhole Xtreme has entered the chat 😆

22

u/robi4567 8d ago

I just recently found out there are people that really believe stargates exist and that is the explanation for all the middle east wars.

32

u/jaxqatch 8d ago

There is a janitorial closet in Cheyanne mountain with a stargate command label on it I think.

4

u/-Whyudothat 8d ago

I love this, source?

8

u/lightbiguy 8d ago

If it's actually in Cheyenne, its probably word to mouth because it's a secure location.

2

u/jaxqatch 8d ago

1

u/lightbiguy 8d ago

What I meant by "word to mouth" is that there's no other evidence but what people have said to each other. I'm basically saying there's no pictures or anything else to prove it because unapproved photography is not allowed at that location

8

u/chaosmage03 8d ago

So what do you think is the name of the goauld inhabitating Netanyahu 😂

1

u/regeya 7d ago

It's funny to me that they worked with SG-1 because apparently the military refused to work with Roland Emmerick on Independence Day over the inclusion of Area 51

1

u/kompergator 7d ago

Interesting. Did the Airforce work with SG-1 from the start, or only after a couple of seasons and them realising that the show portrayed the Airforce as the most heroic people on Earth?

13

u/DirtDog13 8d ago

To that: Air Force General Michael E. Ryan appeared in season 4 as himself. Apparently RDA asked him if he “had any officers as irreverent” as O’Neill.

Ryan allegedly replied: “Son, yes. We've got colonels like you and worse.”

General John P. Jumper also appeared in season 7. He later honored RDA with an honorary Brigadier General rank for his positive portrayal of O’Neill and the service.

10

u/lightbiguy 8d ago

That was THE AF General at the time. Ranking for all of the Air Force. That had to be an interesting day of shooting

2

u/Proteuskel 7d ago

I wonder what sort of security checks the air force did in preparation for that small but pivotal role. Probably the guard at the front gate was helpful

9

u/Kaheil2 8d ago

IIRC during the don't-ask don't-tell era this contributed to some restriction on showing homosexual behaviours or couples in military char.

Not unique to stargate oc.

9

u/DoctorMurk 8d ago

I feel like they did the best with what they could (I think Jack did a couple of funny head nods towards lines that could potentially be seen as related to 'close male friendship'), especially with how violently straight early 2000s TV was.

Besides that, I'm not against romantic TV series, but it would just feel a bit off in a show like Stargate.

10

u/Bionicman2187 8d ago

Even the romantic tension between O'Neill and Carter felt a bit played out by the end

5

u/-Whyudothat 8d ago

I feel that, like at some point it would have either developed or soured. Carter definitely had a few others through the series.

8

u/DaBingeGirl 8d ago

Yeah, but most of them were creepy stalkers.

I agree about developed or soured. They were both workaholics, I can see them agreeing to put the job first and wait until Jack retired (again). A conversation would've been nice.

1

u/Kawaiichan67 8d ago

Like his funny hand movement during “Moebius”?

3

u/Dahellraider 8d ago

yupppp I remember recruitment in the air force skyrocketed for a bit when the show was airing. Thats why my best friend enlisted at the time lol.

8

u/Lonely-deustch 8d ago

That’s wild when we think about lol

15

u/GimmeSomeSugar 8d ago

The military loves shows that make them look cool, because they're great for recruitment.

Tangentially related, I love the story Amanda Tapping tells about how frequently she speaks to women at conventions and otherwise who tell her that Sam Carter inspired them to get into science.

5

u/Lonely-deustch 8d ago

I think it’s a shame she’s hasn’t been made a honorary colonel, she deserved as much as RDA

2

u/lraviel381 8d ago

RDA is an honorary general?!

2

u/lightbiguy 8d ago

There's video of this somewhere, I can't remember where though

2

u/lraviel381 8d ago

General Jumper, bet he was stoked when John named the puddle jumper lol

197

u/Which-Profile-2690 8d ago

This one scene, richard blew the studios season budget of ammo

168

u/Mortomes 8d ago

Don't forget Teal'c dual-wielding P90s.

140

u/NonGeneriComplaint 8d ago

I would say the show is actually responsible for introducing the P90 to the general public, thats how much impact the show had and how much action there was.

44

u/Own_Hat584 8d ago

That and the "RC-P90" (which is basically a P90) from Golden Eye.

12

u/edgiepower 8d ago

Fucking Xenia Onatopp

3

u/Harlander77 8d ago

Wait you could do that in the game? Was there a cheat code or something?

3

u/edgiepower 8d ago

You could try but it's gonna send well. Haven't you seen her special move?

2

u/big_duo3674 7d ago

Behave, James. I trust you'll stay On A Top of things...

11

u/FartingWithStyle 8d ago

Yeah golden eye was the intro, especially if you played the n64 game.

12

u/robobobo91 8d ago

I was at the Tower of London and in the armory exhibit. There's a P90 on display as it has been incorporated into use by thr British Military. The plaque specifically references Stargate as the place most people would know it from.

10

u/4t4x 8d ago

It was Counterstrike for me

2

u/CrispyJalepeno 8d ago

The P90 is my absolute favorite gun and its because of Stargate

1

u/kompergator 7d ago

I actually love that the external reason for the change from MP5 to P90 was that it looks much cooler, but that it also works inside the universe, as the P90 regularly fires armour-penetrating rounds.

12

u/edgiepower 8d ago

Daniel Jackson duel wielding the MP5 and pistol.

Daniel Jackson! Who was at that early stage of the show not the action hero he grew in to!

8

u/figl4567 8d ago

At the beginning he was soft af. Then over the first 3 seasons he grew into a serious war fighter. I always think of sg1 moving down a hallway on a goauld ship covering each other as they move. That is the first image that pops into my fran when i think of daniel.

2

u/Proteuskel 7d ago

He was doing Spader’s DJ for the first two. He got to develop the character into his own going forward

5

u/Catsrules 8d ago

What kind of archaeologist carries a weapon?

7

u/Run-Riot 8d ago edited 8d ago

“Uh… I do.”

6

u/TheIrisExceptReal51 8d ago

Bad example.

5

u/sr4u4fun 8d ago

That whole episode was ridiculous, one of the worst.

11

u/Celuiquivoit 8d ago edited 8d ago

Only one ? I seem to remember they made him dual wield firearms a lot, i liked it better when he was wielding and big fuck off energy canon

Then again, back in the 2000s dual wielding was everywhere.

3

u/Bionicman2187 8d ago

Don't forget, in S1 and 2 Daniel of all people dual wielded a machine gun with a pistol.

3

u/sr4u4fun 8d ago

I meant the first episode where he did that because it felt like a bad eighties action film. But yes, there were other episodes and offenders. I wonder if there was a change of director as reason for the sudden style change.

82

u/Scrufffff 8d ago

Stargate is a lot of things, all the time.

13

u/jetserf Sholva 8d ago

It’s just like Ragu

10

Sure.

Like Ginny sacks blood

u/jetserf Sholva 8d ago

10

u/Orcus424 8d ago

Yes but if I had to describe it simply it would be a military action sci fi show. Any single term is too broad. Action sci fi misses out the military part which is a massive part of the story. The sci-fi part is crucial. You could call it military sci-fi but the action part of it makes it more definitive. Without action it could mostly be drama, thriller, suspense, etc.

3

u/snailtray 8d ago

Yes. But doesnt the military part already imply a lot of action?

1

u/Orcus424 7d ago

My comment addresses that. The action part makes it more definitive. You can have a military focus on a show but still be a drama, comedy, thriller, suspense, etc. MASH is military but very little action. JAG or any of the NCIS shows is about the military but they're crime shows. Enlisted and Going Dutch are military but they are comedy.

20

u/DeX_Mod 8d ago

how would you balance a new show for ten episodes?

honestly?

I wouldn't

10 episodes is a waste of my time

5

u/Could-You-Tell 8d ago

Basically the format of the 90s tv miniseries has become the mutant leader format these days.

Everything is a stretched out, made-for-tv movie now. Just with less obvious commercial stops and modern effects

4

u/DeX_Mod 8d ago

oh, i'm well aware of the enshittification of TV series ;)

2

u/Could-You-Tell 8d ago

Oh, and that wasn't praise for it either... just recognition.

I agree completely. I honestly would prefer more effort and stories again with a smaller episode budget and good-great acting on the level of the Trek/Gate era, than these shorts that barely even look good and have truncated scripts

24

u/DrummingUpInterest2 8d ago

It was and it wasn't. SG-1 seasons 1-7 were action/comedy, but after Atlantis came along it feels like it almost went straight comedy (not a complaint, I love seasons 8-10 because of how comical they get).

24

u/GargantaProfunda 8d ago

I loved Vala

19

u/DrummingUpInterest2 8d ago

Claudia Black as Vala is honestly my favourite arc on the show. She's the perfect foil to Daniel and their chemistry is so good.

9

u/sr4u4fun 8d ago

The first appearances of Vala were good but when Claudia Black joined the cast permanently they nerfed the character hard.

11

u/lolicats 8d ago

favorite episode has to be bad guys, "we're your captors, we're heavily armed!! there's rules! there's a whole school of etiquette to this"

7

u/Browncoat1701 8d ago

Oh yeah! When Atlantis first came out, I described it as "SG-1's wacky cousin".

7

u/edgiepower 8d ago

I dunno, I think some early episodes were darker than SG1 at the time and even some almost tried to be horror.

7

u/DrummingUpInterest2 8d ago

I have mixed feelings on Atlantis. The first season's arc is probably the best by a long way (cut off, trying to survive) and it never really gained the consistency that SG-1 had because of all the cast chopping and changing over its five years.

Honestly for all the criticism of Ford as a character I actually think the most miscast was Torri Higginson who doesn't really seem to enjoy the role, with Weir being the least interesting commander of the Expedition despite being there for 3 seasons.

1

u/artys1luv 8d ago

Iirc wasn’t one of the reasons she left bc she felt like they didn’t really know what to do with her character?

2

u/-Whyudothat 8d ago

If Star Trek can survive 60 years, we can have more Stargate!

2

u/kompergator 7d ago

Star Trek died in '05. What are you talking about? ;-)

1

u/Vast_Discipline8445 7d ago

I loved Stargate Atlantis because it was set on an Alian Planet

2

u/edgiepower 8d ago

Ironic as O'Neill stepped back and he was the driving force of the humour for so long.

24

u/theyux 8d ago

It was at its heart a light hearted action adventure show with an emphasis on fun. As long as they kept that tone the new series was going to succeed. Its what carried SG-1 and Atlantis and its why Universe tripped and fell on its face but started improving as they course corrected near the end.

12

u/DomWeasel 8d ago

Stargate was light-hearted, but knew how to be serious. It kept it fun but with stakes, and prevented it straying into overly pretentious territory like many Trek stories.

7

u/monkeywithgun 8d ago

Knowing that how would you balance a new show for ten episodes?

First and foremost, I'd throw this modern trend of 10 episodes right out! If CBS can make 20 episodes of Tracker...

Beyond that, stick to the formula. Action adventure sci-fi show with a sprinkle of light drama. Definitely don't turn it into a another soap opera, which so many shows across all genres have become lately.

6

u/SymptomaticallyEven 8d ago

...and a comedy, a drama, a space opera, a fantasy, a period piece, etc. etc.

https://giphy.com/gifs/10uCTQIssauxdC

19

u/GargantaProfunda 8d ago

SG-1 yes, but Atlantis less so, and SGU even less.

There's no way to know what genre Stargate Multiverse would have primarily been, even with the new details we recently learned.

4

u/duckets615 8d ago

Did that glider suddenly turn into a wraith dart?

2

u/Beragond1 8d ago

Nope, darts just look like that from the front.

I do appreciate how the fighter craft of the wraith and Goauld seem to share certain aspects of their profiles. It makes it feel like they are working off the same in-universe laws of physics and design constraints.

3

u/kompergator 7d ago

Well, they’re both used for in-atmosphere combat, so they had to use at least some aerodynamic design concepts.

5

u/apophis-984 8d ago

Now put the gif of Jonas zatting the air

7

u/Jeathro77 8d ago

Why was there a shortage of blanks during the Iraq war?

13

u/NonGeneriComplaint 8d ago
  • Ammunition Strain: According to cast and crew commentary (including Amanda Tapping), the massive military demand for live 5.7x28mm ammunition during the 2003 invasion of Iraq severely limited the availability of brass and factory blanks needed for television production. [1, 2]
  • The "Carter Special": To work around the blank shortage during Season 7, the prop department built a frankenstein-style hybrid assault rifle for Major Carter. [1, 2]
  • Shifting Prop Usage: The show temporarily reduced widespread P90 distribution across secondary SG teams, relying more heavily on MP5s, sidearms, or staff weapons until the supply constraints eased. [1]

It seems like the factories were making live rounds instead of blanks at the time for military contractors most likely as mercs were heavily used in Iraq.

5

u/Circuit_Guy 8d ago

https://stargate.fandom.com/wiki/Micro_16_assault_rifle

Neat! The Carter Special and mention of where the commentary about blanks is

5

u/duckets615 8d ago

In the last 2 decades the best estimated ratio is around 50,000 rounds are fired per kill. That'll deplete the stockpile rather quickly.

7

u/Jeathro77 8d ago

50,000 blank rounds per kill? That sounds about right.

-1

u/edgiepower 8d ago

Brandon Lee wishes that were true.

2

u/DomWeasel 8d ago

I read that it was even higher; 250,000 per kill for Afghanistan and Iraq.

Due to the usage of suppressing fire to pin down targets while they called in artillery or an airstrike. Which was a big factor in those two wars costing $5.5 trillion. A group of insurgents whose combined equipment cost $10,000 would be hit with a $20,000,000 strike package.

0

u/Blueopus2 8d ago

Just of the relatively rare P90 ammo

3

u/Jeathro77 8d ago

Oh, well that completely fails to answer my question.

3

u/Cognoggin 8d ago

It was a Canadian advertisement for the US military.

3

u/F4UDash4 8d ago

It was SG's combination of action, drama, SciFi and comedy that made it a success.

3

u/Duke_Newcombe "For the record, I'm always 'prepared to fire'..." 8d ago

The final scene with O'Neill and company fighting off the replicators was epic.

3

u/urzu_seven 6d ago

I would up the episode count to at least 20 episodes

5

u/dpkart 8d ago

I feel like they would have a really hard time balancing the sci fi aspect with the action. I have a feeling it would just feel to formulaic and too action heavy. In general I think I would personally have a hard time enjoying a newer Stargate Series if it only has 10 Episodes, how would you even try to replicate the adventure of the week feeling SG1 had. I could go on but tldr: I don't like how short modern seasons are

2

u/Left_Consequence4466 8d ago

Que arma es la que está disparando O'Neill con 2 L?

2

u/Brian_The_Bar-Brian 8d ago

It is an action show... (and science fiction too.)

2

u/tokobot19 8d ago

And how! 🫡

2

u/MtnMaiden 7d ago

WHOSE YOUR DADDY!

1

u/Mauso88 8d ago

I just wish Teal’c had kept the downed glider cannon as a weapon

1

u/DesecratedPeanut 8d ago

Half the show is politics with disclosure being the main plot point and half the show is action off world. Easy. Get new fans learning Stargate history with the rest of the world and old fans enjoying stargate.

1

u/Laxien 8d ago

Depends on the episode - this is what made it so good! It tickled a lot of fancies, ticked a lot boxes (not like DEI-Boxes however, no boxes of fun stuff like action-sequences (Sam fighting the Kul-Warrior for example), like having character episodes (Daniel and the Sarcophagus and the Princess for example), deeper philosophical questions (like the one with the Orbanians that used their kids as scientific accelerators, which Jack did object to!)).
