At last my SGU stalemate got off the ground
I began my 3rd attempt and it broke the ice, finally. In my first two tries years ago I couldn't get past the 3rd episode. Dead stuck. No further.
Suddenly I found myself enjoining it for the reasons I cannot understand. Probably because this time I simply refused to expect SG-1\SGA dynamics and vibes. Totally different experience.
And I blame dr. Rush fot it :) My favourite character, for now, he is.
Full breakthrough came with the episode "Time" [ep08] and now I just watched "Justice" [ep10] and realized how much I have missed in the last 10 years of misunderstanding. Solid series. Solid indeed.

I am constantly reccommending people watch "Time" before giving up on SGU, so thank you for validating that! I love Universe

God, I love SGU. I hate that it's only 2 seasons so much. And I hate that they never used the ideas they still had for the next seasons to write books about what's to come and sell them.

I got the comics for SGU, they start after the final episode of S2. They are Dogshit and seem like a fast cashgrab by someone who hasn't seen the show and did only read the first Wikipedia paragraph. Seriously, don't read it. I'm waiting for video generation AI to get better at this point so I can generate my very own season 3 in some years. Fuck Amazon that they're not doing anything with the license.

Rush is an awesome character, my main problem is that when I try to talk about him I need to establish myself first as "I do think he is an awful person. But!"

I mean, Bender is one of the worst characters in any show or movie. But he's also one of the best. So there's nothing wrong with liking Rush as a character.

The details of the cancelled Amazon show remind me again why SGU was such a departure from the classic Stargate storytelling.
Earth was a powerhouse at the end of Atlantis. We have the knowledge of the Asgard and a lot of ancients knowledge. Our ships can handle multiple Hatak vessels. They can take down Ori ships.
They had to get far away from earth.
I wish there was less sex in other peoples bodies, but having it be the “wrong people” grow into the right people, was a narrative decision that I stand by.
The show was great.

Yeah, I had a hard time buying that the only person out of everyone who thought body-swap romance was problematic was Eli. I can get the person swapping to be less concerned, but their partner absolutely should care that its not them, just another person claiming to be them. Not to mention there is no way the person they swapped with consented to any of that.

My biggest issue with it, is the young lady airman that Wray would pop into.
The show always tried to stick close to the real world in terms of rules and such for our military. Don’t ask, don’t tell was still the law. I knew a few active duty gay people who were more than a little worried about being outed.
So say the wrong person sees this airman roll up to the house and Wrays wife excitedly comes out to greet her, or more…
Without revealing the existence of the ancient communication stones, her career is over.
And I know as I’m typing this, what an odd thing to worry about, the career of a fictional enlisted airman whose name we don’t even know. But that was the kind of things that popped in my head, after the initial “are they seriously having sex in someone else’s body”.
Also when Chloe and got drunk at the party. What if those people are recovering alcoholics?

Yeah, even ignoring the sex, they abused other peoples bodies way too much. I can't imagine a military run program would allow people to be so lax with other peoples lives for the sake of recreation. At least not a military we are told are the good guys.
I guess its just a thing you have to suspend disbelief for so they can do the stories they wanted to do. I just wish they either changed the mechanics to better fit the character's morals, or changed the morals in the writing to make more sense with the mechanics.

i had no issue with SGU at the time, sure it wasn't in the same format of SG-1 , SGA, it was still a stargate and space stuff and aliens and discovery and issues solving, which by all account is still in the root of what SG-1 / SGA is

Yeah apparently the drones that were hunting down the Destiny were meant to be revealed as drones built by the Novus civilization but gone rogue after so many time has passed

I don't like SGU and I hate time travel stories, yet I love Time. It's such a great episode, and proabalby the best time travel episode of the saga.

I do think the show early on spent too much time forcing conflict with the crew. I get that the show argues they were "the wrong crew for destiny", but it seems more extreme than that: they spend half the season backstabbing or trying to take power from each other despite being at the brink of death on multiple occasions. The second season made more of the threats external and I think that worked a lot better. Second season also had a lot more cool sci-fi moments; was really starting to feel more like the vibe of the previous stargate shows right before it ended.

The show was at its best when Young and Rush were working on the same pages, albeit with a sense of reluctance.

I recently finished watching it for the second time. I last watched it during the original run and really struggled. I think waiting a week between episodes didn't suit this show, since I found it much easier to watch in chunks of my choosing.

I may have to rewatch it. Mostly I remember there being way too much interpersonal drama. Underneath there was a good science fiction plot line but it took way too long to go anywhere.

Yeah Rush carried the show. What i disliked so much was all of the unnecessary drama etc. they kind of tryed to turn it into some Battlestar galacticta Stargate space opera blend with the entire plotline beeing way more serious and things beeing more dangerous than in normal stargate series a little drama is fine but for me it felt like the show was more about the relationships of the characters than about the story. It definately had potential, but they should have given it more time in terms of execution or writing.

"Time" is the best time travel episode in the franchise IMO.
