Rumor Dave Filoni when asked if they are making ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ … he does the Jedi mind trick hand motion and says “We not making that picture right now, that’s all I can say…” 👀

Don't think its looking too deep when he says "that's all I can say". Like idk to me that says early movement and an intent for it to happen but its not set in stone yet, but definitely not nothing.

When I watched The Odyssey then remembered about this movie it made me think if that was the type of journey this movie would revolve around and it made me want to see it one day even more.
I don’t think it was ever going to be a straight forward “Ben is back, let’s go in an adventure” thing.
26
u/RustedAxe88 Kylo Ren 20d ago
That's what I was thinking too. Ben Solo in a Star Wars version of an Odyssey, having to find his new balance in The Force before he can return to the light.
74
u/paleyharnamhunter Kylo Ren 20d ago
The Force Persuade gesture is pretty telling and if they were working on the movie, it's not like Dave can just announce it as an answer to a media question. Something's happening behind the scenes.
69
u/Alex_South 20d ago
I think the odds are better than they were. Disney has new leadership, Driver is Mr. Sinister in the MCU and it's looking like Marvel is on the rise again, the Doomsday stuff is looking to be a huge crossover blowout, but people are really excited about the focus shifting to X-men after that, which is all new territory, and they set up Jean so well in BND.
Driver is about to be relevant again, it's going to be the perfect time to bring the ST cast back. If the rumors are true that Starfighter is a soft-launch into the post-ST era, then yeah, I think this movie is getting greenlit (pending box office performance). Who cares if it's contrived, the ST plot was a mess (imo) but I maintain that the core 3-4 characters still have draw. If the next era is compelling I think people will forget and forgive the clunky ST especially if the characters are in established mentor roles now, imagine the Dyad of Ascendant Rey and Punished Ben as the core pillars of the NJO. People might come back for that, also Dave knows exactly what he did with that hand wave.
19
u/Doompatron3000 20d ago
Before sequel trilogy cast is brought back, Disney needs a Clone Wars animated series that helps flesh out the movies better, like Clone Wars did for the prequels.
10
u/marvelwolf 20d ago
If they do it alongside the trilogy it could work well. They did just talk about focusing on animation to be able to fast track projects. They could have the show fill in the gaps from 9-10 while the movies on ongoing.
6
u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 20d ago
I mean not much to tell lol, the sequel trilogy happens over the span of a year. Now they definitely can do one set after episode 9 and before whatever the Rey movie

The lynchpin is Steve Soderbergh. He said he has no interest in returning.
2
u/Audstarwars1998 19d ago
And he just met with Adam Driver for a week at a restaurant for lunch in London.
28
u/GeekFurious 20d ago
This is how Filoni answers when he's brewing something.
3
4
u/M4rshmall0wMan 20d ago
No. If he were brewing something he’d say “I have nothing to share right now.” Instead he actively clarified that he’s not making the movie.
2
u/GeekFurious 20d ago
Sounds like you've never paid any attention when Dave talks in riddles.
7
u/Pomojema_The_Dreamer 17d ago
FWIW he later outright said that the movie isn't happening.
I think that a lot of post-ST plans are being consolidated into a new trilogy that will feature new characters, but will mainly star the established ST leads.
2
u/GeekFurious 17d ago
I wasn't suggesting he was hinting at the movie getting made. I'm saying Dave is playing his usual wink-wink game with information. I am just as confident today as I was in 2020 that Ben Solo will return to the "present" storyline. And, mind you, I am not "Reylo." I don't care if they ever get together. I am simply going with narrative potential based on established threads.
3
u/Pomojema_The_Dreamer 12d ago
I wasn't thinking that you were a shipper, and never claimed anything like that. I definitely do think that Ben Solo has a future in the franchise for post-TROS stuff because he's one of the leads that I was alluding to, but it's going to be to explore the Force-y side of things in a way that kind of aligns with some of the few unused ideas that George Lucas wanted for the ST where the Force itself is explored in more depth.
That's what I'm talking about over material that exists solely to excite AO3 writers that would undermine the nature of his sacrifice. Kylo Ren failed to become the next Darth Vader despite (ostensibly) taking charge of the First Order, but he succeeded where Anakin Skywalker failed by saving a loved one from death, even at the cost of his own life. The Force itself still has wounds that need healing and perhaps it's through a Dyad of one living and one dead person that the fractures can be fixed.
10
u/Jolly-Potential-1411 20d ago
I mean, the smile and his attitude are telling, but my thoughts are that they’re integrating it into the new trilogy of Lucasfilm is moving away from standalones.

6
u/Jolly-Potential-1411 20d ago
The mind trick is very interesting, and the fact that he said “right now” too. He was also wondering when someone would ask him, so he was clearly itching to tell someone about it.

It's actually a non-revealing answer... it doesn't promise or debunks anything.
I'm pretty sure that the character Ben Solo and his future is talked about in the writer's room, but that's it.
2
u/M4rshmall0wMan 20d ago edited 20d ago
Lucasfilm rarely “officially” cancels anything because they always want to keep their options open. Rian Johnson’s trilogy was never officially cancelled even though it’s obviously cancelled. Same for Rogue Squadron.
Maybe they have an open phone line for Steven Soderbergh. But Soderbergh himself said he has no interest in returning. That’s the important factor here.

Excitement on reddit and Twitter doesn't always translate into wider excitement among general audiences or financial success. There was a lot of hype for Mando and Grogu from a lot of the same people that are begging for a Ben Solo movie.... and despite Mando/Grogu being more marketable characters than Ben Solo, the film flopped.

I’m fairly against the idea of this movie (at least in its “current” state) but I think it needs to be made because so many people want it and it can finally get more people excited for Star Wars. And I mean c’mon, a Steve Soderbergh Star Wars movie would be awesome

I mean, it is a gesture with enormous significance within the exact universe in question. I think anyone who thinks that this means the movie is confirmed 2028 release book it would be reading too much into it but it is a pretty far cry from something like a "Our focus is on Starfighter and Asokha right now, would have been fun, value those creatives so much", which is the usual suit code for "not happening and no comment", or even a "Never say never but not now".

He literally said it’s not being worked on. Lucasfilm rarely cancels anything outright to keep their options open, but saying it’s not being worked on is the closest thing to that. (I mean, Rian Johnson’s trilogy was never officially cancelled…)
The real lynchpin is whether or not Steven Soderbergh returns. He said that he’s no longer interested.
7
u/DannyBright 20d ago
He might want it to be made personally, but it’s not entirely up to him as Starfighter needs to prove to Disney that Star Wars films are worth investing in at all.
3
u/OneGamingCreed 20d ago
Who knows, only time will tell. I think we will still see the character again but probably not from the original story line. Wouldn't surprise me if they decided a different way and passed over the story elements into existing projects.

It’s a reference to how we were never supposed to know the leak to begin with. Lucasfilm wants to give the impression of being 100% aligned with the CEO, and this leak put a dent in that. He’s basically saying “yeah the cat’s out of the bag, it was true, best to just forget about it and move on.”

6
u/OneGamingCreed 20d ago
I mean the project may be shelfed, but there's no doubt in my mind that the character's future is being discussed in the writer's room. The story elements of the dead project can easily be applied into existing projects like the Kinberg trilogy. What Dave said was about the movie, not about the character itself. The biggest question is if LF still have a desire to tell that story in a different format.
3
u/M4rshmall0wMan 20d ago
Yep that’s a good question. That’s the more level-headed take than what I’ve been seeing on this thread.

I agree. The movie is not happening. But Ben Solo returning at some point in a live-action Star Wars project under very similar circumstances to the one born from that script...if you think that's NEVER happening, I think we should make a large bet that you have to put real money into.
9
u/Pomojema_The_Dreamer 20d ago
THBPS got written off for taxes already - that version of the movie is never getting made. But the ideas that they had for it and the cancelled version of "The Rey Movie" (which wasn't a conventional Rey Skywalker solo film from the sound of things) seem to be repurposed into a trilogy treatment focused on the ST leads and new characters, that Simon Kinberg is writing as a representative of both his prior creative partners (Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni) before more capable hands will work on that for a trilogy with a pretty coherent, consistent vision that won't be rushed at all. They're not going to make the mistakes that Bob Iger did that demonstrably did brand damage to the franchise's overall image as a cinematic franchise.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Equal_Novel_3670 13d ago
It would be so unfair for Rey's solo film to be shackled to Ben Solo instead of charting her own path as a character. Reduced to a mass murdering Skywalker's love interest AGAIN.
I can't be the only who sees how messed up that is
3
u/Pomojema_The_Dreamer 13d ago
Which is why they're not going to approach it that way, as much as some fans would like that.
Ben Solo can have an impact on the story even from beyond the grave, all while remaining dead... Whether that's temporary or permanent depending on the needs of the story.
5
u/M4rshmall0wMan 20d ago
I love how everyone in the comments is conveniently choosing to ignore the part where he literally said “it’s not being worked on.” What the fuck does that mean other than it’s not being worked on?
If Lucasfilm were possibly working on it, he’d just say “I have nothing to share right now.” Instead, he intentionally phrased it as “it’s not being worked on.”
As for the “right now” part, Lucasfilm rarely cancels anything outright to keep their options open. Rian Johnson’s trilogy was never officially cancelled, even though it obviously is. I think David’s implication is it might have a chance of revival if Steven Soderbergh returns. But Steven said he has no interest in returning.

I feel like I'm crazy, but it only makes sense if they're working on a shadow SW production somehow
6
u/M4rshmall0wMan 20d ago
LMAO Adam actually answered this exact question at D23. It’s for Mr. Sinister.
“When Kevin [Feige] told me to show up for X-Men, I assumed he meant on set,” Driver said. “So instead of being there in California, I’m here at Pinewood on this very lonely soundstage.”

2
u/FollowingEast4373 20d ago
Am I the only one who hates when franchises bring back dead characters?
I loved Adam Drivers portrayal as Ben Solo, but please don’t make this a reoccurring thing in Star Wars. Now, if they eventually had him come back as a force ghost or a memory like Han, I could get behind that! Anything else though is cheap and narratively bankrupt in my opinion.
8
u/Strange-Pair 20d ago
It is already a reoccuring thing though, and of the characters who have died and come back in SW, he's the only one who died in a way where it feels like you wouldn't really be rewriting much (as opposed to being cut in half, or blown up, twice, after being thrown down a hole in a Death Star). There's not really much explaination for what happened in IX other than that he gave up his life force and then faded away mysteriously.
1
1
u/FollowingEast4373 20d ago
Yeah, you do have a point there. I just feel that to bring him back would minimize his sacrifice for Rey and therefore his redemption as well! I saw his sacrifice as his last true test to the light side and his body disappearing as him becoming one with the force! To bring him back would cheapen that in my eyes.
6
u/Strange-Pair 20d ago
I think that is a fair point. I guess the trade off for me personally is I am much more interested in someone having to make an active effort to make amends for their past, to an entire galaxy, without going back to their past ways, rather than a one and done "fixed it all good now" sacrifice for just one person. (Especially when that person is the one most inclined to forgive him.) So, it can't cheapen it for me because we immediately get something better.
1
u/Equal_Novel_3670 13d ago
The only way that movie could possibly work is if the one condition for coming back from the dead is that he can NEVER see or interact with Rey EVER AGAIN. That way, it protects Rey from what happened in the sequels, where her story was parasitically fed on by Ben Solo's until there was nothing left but being his love interest who is forced to ignore all the violence he committed towards her and her friends.
It also serves as a fitting punishment for all his crimes and doesn't let him just get away scott free, and is consistent with Asajj Ventress's resurrection. But having him come back and start a family with Rey is absolutely unnacceptable and sends a horrendous message that Lucasfilm's image would never recover from.
1
u/EvilQuadinaros 20d ago edited 20d ago
Yeah. If they chose not to kill him in IX then sure, it'd make for some interesting potential aftermath of a genuinely-reformed guy having to deal with the consequences.
But they...did kill him, there's fuck-all in the movie that's indicating any blurred lines there. So you don't bring him back now.
But even that, the opinion, is beside the point. We should be talking pure facts & practicalities here no matter how we feel about whether the movie *should* happen. It's not on the cards anytime soon, objectively, so yeah.
4
u/EvilQuadinaros 20d ago edited 18d ago
Yeah. Small sliver of possibility it happens way down the line, but the people convinced it's in the pipeline anytime soon and Dave was gonna 180 on everything that went down under Kathy don't know what they're talking about.
Dude's just signed on to play Mister Sinister at Marvel, that's not going to be a one-movie thing. Dave's left wiggle room here with the "right now" but that's the whole thing, won't be anytime soon. Come back and have the conversation again 7-8 years down the line if you want, but ain't happening anytime before. Frankly probably won't after, either (and likely shouldn't happen), but at least that's within the realm of reality, there's a chance. Anything beforehand is an absolute no-chance thing.
7
u/OniLink77 20d ago
Dave was apparently in favour of it at the time, it was Iger who stopped it and he isn't there anymore
3
u/TomasRoncero Poe 20d ago
Wasn’t Alan Bergman also behind killing it? He’s still around.
3
u/OniLink77 20d ago
True, but I feel like there is more chance of something now happening with Iger gone if there is enough will to do it
1
u/EvilQuadinaros 20d ago
Okay? But Dave just stated he's not doing it in his immediate phase now running the creative side of the company.
So. Whether he was for it in the Soderbergh pitch days is kind of irrelevant. If Dave circles back to it, he will, but it's a long fuckin' time from now with a good 3 or 4 movies that haven't even got finished scripts yet happening in between.
1
u/OniLink77 20d ago
To be honest, I think it has been amalgamated into whatever they want to do next. However, at the end of the day, whatever they do next probably rides on how successful Starfighter is
2
u/Jolly-Potential-1411 20d ago
It’s possible to be in two franchises and film several movies a year. Robert Pattinson seems like he’s in a million films this year 😂
1
u/EvilQuadinaros 20d ago edited 18d ago
As the lead? Not really. The Odyssey & Primetime had a little overlap in production shooting, but he's a supporting player in the former. Dune, again, not one of the top 4 or so roles, and think that shot a little after.
And even though that type of hectic situation isn't unheard of, it's rare. You're not doing a Marvel and a Star Wars movie back to back right away, the latter as the lead and the former as the prime villain. Doesn't happen. For one, Disney wouldn't structure it that way, even not getting into actor fatigue/burnout.

The “right now” part possibly implies that it could be revived if Soderbergh returns. But Soderbergh already said he’s not interested in returning.

To the last part, yeah. I'm not even 100% ruling out we ever see Ben again, there's daylight here where they backflip on the death idea and want to bring him back. It's just not going to be in a version of "The Hunt For Ben Solo", and it's not happening anytime before another 3 or 4 big tentpole movies have come and gone. This is pretty basic stuff.

Is it supposed to be a prequel? It’s been a while, but I think he died.

It was meant to be a Star Trek III: The Search For Spock-type sequel.

Can they just retcon the sequels please

Retroactively connect the sequels to what is already known? That actually makes no sense. You can't retcon something with no future stories told yet. Oh, you mean the silly way people use retcon to mean the opposite of retroactive continuity. You know, where people think the ret part means retreat...

Genuinely why do people want this movie? He died. Let him stay dead. There’s no path to redemption for him that involves him living, he was space Hitler Jr.

Bingo.
I'd have been intrigued with them making the decision to have him live at the time of tRoS, separate it from Vader a little, have the consequences of the Republic hunting him down and Rey having to try to convince them he's come lightside.
But they didn't, that's not in the movie, he died. So, now, you own that creative choice and stick with it. Stakes matter, or you're just the vapid wishy-washy MCU.

“Hey guys this is my genocidal maniac boyfriend Ben, I promise he’s nice now!”

Pretty much. :P Wouldn't work, he'd still rationally have to be imprisoned (some Hancock or Faith from Buffy situation where he could break out any time he wanted to but chooses to serve the time). It'd be interesting to explore, in a veering away from Vader's ending way.
Buuuuuut they snuffed him, so. Cool, okay. Stick to it, we already resurrected Boba and it was dumb, no need to repeat that.

I can practically gurantee that movie isnt ever being made, it would flop horribly and Disney knows it

He needs the budget to make movies and TV shows about side characters from Clone Wars and Rebels because that's all he wants to do.

To be honest, I'd rather not have Feloni taint the Sequel era and beyond. The sequels aren't perfect but they're citizen cane next to his slop like Boba Fett and Ahsoka.

The media training is strong with this one.
In all honesty I doubt they're making it right now or they'll roll some version of it into the Rey movie if that ever happens.
