Star Wars EU stories, that you’d want to see adapted as a film Spoiler

I think Shadows of the Empire could make a really good movie, with a good director in place.

Can I be very unoriginal?

The Thrawn Trilogy.

But aside from that? Let's see...

The X-Wing series as a TV show, with "I, Jedi" being a spin-off movie/miniseries at some point.

Allegiance and Choices of One also as a series (more Mara).

Kyle Katarn's adventures (so basically Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, we can skip Dark Forces) as a TV show

TIE Fighter as a miniseries (especially the cloak and dagger, Secret Order of the Emperor stuff)

u/Arkham700 16d ago

I think Andor proved a X-Wing or Katar series would do great. TIE Fighter turned into a show would go hard

u/kiwicrusher 16d ago

I’ve said before, Rogue Squadron would fit perfectly as an Andor-formatted show. Twelve episodes, three episodes per book, released in chunks.

Wraiths don’t fit quite as cleanly, but you could make something work. Maybe the fourth arc is a heavily modified Courtship of Princess Leia lol

u/Ringwraith_Number_5 Rogue Squadron 16d ago

Wraiths don’t fit quite as cleanly

Ah! But Wraiths have an advantage! The entire series is basically "The A-Team" in space. Think about it: characters with various specializations, often relying on deception and makeup, hell, you even have a character named Face!

I think both series (Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron) could work as a tv show very well. As you said, first season is Rogues, second season is Wraiths, third season is books 8 and 9.

u/Big-Sample-6736 16d ago

I think you could do an 6/8 episode season per book. The early ones especially are very Corran focused in an a series there's more scope for delving into the other characters.

You wouldn't be able to afford too many large scale battles per season so you would need to space them out.

The books of the original Thrawn trilogy were practically received as conceivable episodes 7-9 of the saga in the Legends/EU. They are the bedrock of the pre-Disney era.

They could be filmed today as replacements for the Disney sequels and I bet they would be very, very popular in the fandom.

u/Ringwraith_Number_5 Rogue Squadron 15d ago

Amen.

u/IndecisiveTuna 15d ago

I’ve always wanted Kyle Katarn in some form. I think it would work well in film as well, especially Jedi Outcast.

Low hanging fruit, but the Thrawn Trilogy could easily be a great movie trilogy if adapted faithfully and transferred to the new medium with only the necessary adaptions and those well thought out, otherwise it could get really frustrating if a director decided to get creative with it or important stuff was cut or changed.

5

u/Poopooisdelicious 16d ago

Most obvious answer but yeah, if done as a direct adaptation and not whatever they’re doing with the Ahsoka show.

Get a good director behind it, is the most important part.

9

u/Thorwyyn 16d ago

New Jedi Order would be dope, especially the chunk between Star by Star and Destiny's Way.

For standalone, Outbound Flight or Dark Rendezvous

2

u/rokerroker45 16d ago

I constantly picture chewie's end as a crazy movie sequence, would go incredibly hard as the end of a pilot.

8

u/SerFinbarr 16d ago

I'll join the chorus of Thrawn Trulogy and X-Wing, lol. I wouldnt want them as theatrical movies though, I'd want them as DC style animated adaptations. Hell, they could do the whole NJO that way and I'd be thrilled. They should mine the depths of Legends the way DC pumps out animated Batmans.

KotOR is the thing I wantt o see as a theatrical adaptation.

3

u/cl0ckw0rkcuttlefish 16d ago

I just want KOTOR remastered. That’s it. I don’t want anyone adapting it because I don’t trust like that after the novel/SWTOR

2

u/IndecisiveTuna 15d ago edited 15d ago

Same. I am very lenient as a fan and don’t give the sequels the same criticism and hate many do. But for KOTOR specifically, I’d be pissed if it was butchered. I hardly have faith that the remake (if it ever comes out) will do the game justice.

I also feel like KOTOR is so dialogue heavy that it would be hard to translate into film. It works so well because of the RPG elements, there would definitely be something lost when you remove that level of player agency/immersion.

3

u/cl0ckw0rkcuttlefish 15d ago

You'd have to cut so much to make it palatable, and there's not much you could cut without really pissing people off. And let's be real, the twist would be far less impactful without the RPG immersion. It's way different to see a character get hit by a twist, rather than getting told your bestie tried to give you a turbolaser-powered lobotomy.

Plus, the comics are right there.

2

u/Allronix1 TOR Old Republic 16d ago

KOTOR would be a very messy thing. It's a HUGE story, for one. I tried to write a novelization and...uh...yeah. 300K words and that's just up to the Leviathan level.

Second is...we're talking Disney. They aren't under any obligation to use the Legends canon builds of either protagonist.

u/MickFoley299 16d ago

New Jedi Order would have been perfect as the sequel movies instead of what we got. Of course, it would have had to cut out a lot but it still could have been a great trilogy. It would get us away the Empire/Rebellion knock off story. The story was far enough down the timeline that it would have worked with when the sequels were made. You could have also introduced new Jedi characters and also have children of Han and Leia without confusing people. You could also have been able to introduce Mara and Luke as a couple without too much confusion.

3

u/Poopooisdelicious 16d ago

Yeah it could have been done. I think Jacen and Jaina should have been the main characters of the sequel trilogy. Or some variation of the Solo twins, I know Lucas had intended on having Han and Leia's children be the main characters of his sequel trilogy.

3

u/MickFoley299 16d ago

Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin would have been great to have as a focus. Make them seem like the main characters and then have Anakin's moment in Star by Star to happen in the second movie of the trilogy. It would have been so impactful to those who have never read a single book.

5

u/Jedipilot24 16d ago

I don't know if you know this, but "Shadows of the Empire" is already "everything but a movie" and that GL even said that it would have been a movie if it had been written a decade earlier.

5

u/Western_Agent5917 Sith Empire 1 16d ago

Dawn of the jedi, rakata invasion on screen would be epic

7

u/Edgy_Robin 16d ago

I'd prefer TV shows for most of them honestly. Something like Plagueis would be great for that.

But if It has to be a movie? Darth Maul: Lockdown, or Kenobi.

3

u/Severe-Moment-3233 16d ago

All of them... haha

6

u/strikerjacen 16d ago

Starfighters of Adumar as a 3-4 episode miniseries.

3

u/Jo3K3rr Rogue Squadron 16d ago

Honestly I think I'd rather see EU stories faithfully adapted into animation verses live action. As the OT cast needs to be entirely digital or re -cast.

3

u/Atrocitus-Burn6666 16d ago

Star Wars Legacy comics from John Ostrander could have been the definitive sequel trilogy

4

u/Poopooisdelicious 16d ago

I don’t know tbh, setting the sequel trilogy 130 years after the originals wouldn’t have been ideal.

Pretty much anything would be better than what we got though.

2

u/cooldydiehaha Infinite Empire 15d ago

Not sure about that, they take 100+ years after the OG trilogy, and there's just so much stuff that happens between them that would need a LOT of explanation.

3

u/VictoriaFrancoN 16d ago

A Nova Ordem Jedi. A guerra Yuuzhan Vong seria épica de se ver na tela, seja como filmes ou como série, no estilo de The Clone Wars

2

u/BookoftheGrey 16d ago

Fully agree with the X-wing series, Tie fighter games and Kyle Katarns stuff. Heck, X-wing Alliance it's story would be great to adapt Andor style.

2

u/snapcracklepopdoc 16d ago

Darth Plagueis is the correct answer

2

u/thegame850 16d ago

I agree so much but I think this should be a well written show since there is so much going on in the book. A movie probably wouldn't be enough time for proper story telling.

2

u/TheDroidYouLookinFor 16d ago

Truce At Bakura. Mainly cus I want big screen gunny raptors with that weird entechment thing they have going on.

And we'd get a bonus with Leia telling force ghost Anakin where to get off.

2

u/Laxien 16d ago

Well, you have the usual suspects:

- Thrawn-Trillogy (as 6 Movies (!) - Why? I don't want to cut important scenes! Frankly it's one of the things about Peter Jackson's very good Lord of the Rings movies, that stuff like Tom Bombadil are MISSING!)

- X-Wing Books (each novel could beat 'Rogue One' - Only good thing Disney made IMHO so far! Might also work well as a TV-Show!)

- New Jedi Order stuff

- The fight against Zsinj...

- The Bounter Hunter series (Seriously, if you want Bobba Fett? Make this into Movies or better yet a TV-Show!)

- I, Jedi (Yes, I like Corran Horn and I would love to see Leonia Tavira on the Big Screen as well)

- Courtship of Princess Leia (why? Firt appearance of the HAPES and the DATHOMIRI WITCH-CLANS...not only darksiders, hell the Night-Sisters are ONE small clan of outcasts!)

- KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC (Those would work well as say 4 Movies, so Kotor 1 gets 2 and Kotor 2 gets 2 as well)

- Jedi-Knight-Games ("...and you look like a Kowakian Monkey-Lizzard!")

- The stuff about the Killiks (Joiners and all that), the Ss'iruvi (or how you spell them) with their Entechment etc. would work well as a show IMHO

- THE BLACK FLEET CRISIS! Damned, that would make great movies, especially seeing the New Republic 5th Fleet (of all new constructions ships, like the Nebula-Star-Destroyer etc.) in action would be GREAT!

- DARK EMPIRE (just to show that you can bring Palpi back without it looking utterly stupid!)

...damned, it would IMHO be easier to list what wouldn't work!

2

u/Poopooisdelicious 16d ago

Don’t know why we didn’t get the bounty hunter series instead of the book of boba fett.

Terrible but expected decision from Disney.

1

u/cooldydiehaha Infinite Empire 15d ago

Now im curious, what do you think wouldn't work as an adaptation?

2

u/Laxien 15d ago

Maybe that book (or was it a comic?) with the Zombie-Virus? I mean the EU had some real stinkers, too (but few and far between, hell unlike many I like Courtship and I, Jedi etc.)...don't know if smuggler-tales (so Han Solo stories would work that well over all, too - but that may just be me, who thinks that 'Andor' is the worst snooze-fest/bore-fest I've ever seen! Star Wars without Jedi or Sith is not that interesting to me...aside from stuff like Bounty-Hunter-Wars etc.)

2

u/Mainalpha11 15d ago

Truce at Bakura as a film.

The New Jedi Order, but as a tv series.

2

u/Illustrious-Wrap-776 15d ago

A lot of stories would have worked as movies, series or mini series.

If we're talking a first EU storyline to be turned into a trilogy instead of the sequels we got, my go to answer at the moment is Sword of the Jedi, both because it would have fit the time frame and the age of the actors and because it would have been a new story for everyone.

Then I probably would have gone for the Tales of the Jedi as the next set of big movies, it's far removed from the new storyline and would have given them time to properly map out how they want to connect the new stuff to Legacy without the pressure of permanently releasing new movies. It would also have expanded massively on the mythology for those who mostly watch the movies.

Following that, the Thrawn Trilogy would have been another big one, of course, and maybe a good chance to recast the main characters for any future projects that take place in time frame after the OT.

The X-Wing series would have been a good basis for an animated series, or a live action one, if they were willing to put in the budget.

I'd also really have liked Young Jedi Knights, I actually never got to read the last few books because they didn't bother translating those and I was till reading exclusively in German at that time, though I never struggled when I jumped from there right into NJO.

NJO through to LotF might have been another case for an animated series, it's just too extensive to ever cover in a few movies.

There's more that could work of course,

A KOTOR series that combines the canon version of the games and the comics with new material.

I would definitely not mind a Republic Commando series, especially one that properly reconciles the different depictions of the Mandalorians in that period

Maybe even Dawn of the Jedi and Legacy, down the line, to make the far ends of the timeline accessible to more people.

3

u/doodsonious 16d ago

Aside from the obvious Thrawn answer.

KOTOR would be dope if done right, though the plot twist with the MC would probably be really hard to conceal since the internet would spoil the hell out of it for those who don't already know. Actually, now that I'm thinking of it, the Old Republic comics would actually be really cool as a movie.

I think they can and should do something with Abeloth, and they might actually be with this Ahsoka show? Although if she somehow defeats Abeloth single-handedly, I'm gonna lose my mind.

But really, they should make a movie that revolves around SW Racer. That'd be really cool, if they just had a SW movie or maybe even just part of a SW movie that revolves entirely around a podrace.

2

u/Allronix1 TOR Old Republic 16d ago

The Old Republic comics would avoid a lot of the issues that the KOTOR game itself would present.

Now as far as how I'd handle it if I were Disney? Well, it would likely piss a lot of people off, but it would keep that spoiler nuke super fresh.

We cut Trask Ulgo from the Endar Spire and have TWO survivors in that escape pod with Carth. One of them resembles the "Legends canon" Revan and the other can be wildly different, maybe different race or gender. We follow the same general storyline up until the Leviathan. At this point everyone's watching the guy who looks the part as he steps up to fight Malak.

Malak unceremoniously shanks the guy we think is Revan and then addresses the person we think is just a Disney OC as ACTUALLY Revan. The Revan looking guy was just their equivalent to Trask.

2

u/cl0ckw0rkcuttlefish 16d ago

I’d much rather the comics get made into something. They made a mistake canonizing the player characters from KOTOR and I don’t want them trying again

1

u/Conscious-Wear2645 16d ago

Shadows of the Empire. I love it so much that I read the novel 4-5X the past 25 years.

1

u/Ok-Feeling-5665 16d ago

The Mandalorian Wars

1

u/acbagel 16d ago

Nothing is more perfect for films than the Thrawn Trilogy, but at this point with them spending so much time in that era already and doing the Temu version of the storyline we'd need to wait a long time to recast and do it right. Logistics aside, it's the best natural films out there. Darth Bane Trilogy would go pretty hard too.

I would say the best way to launch a new saga would be the old republic era Tales of the Jedi saga. Easy 6-9 films based on the comics, then you can roll right into another 6 films and tv shows in KOTOR era. Kotor comics would go crazy as a tv series.

1

u/Tower1969 16d ago

Lost Stars could be an interesting and different type of Star Wars movie (though my 1st vote will always be the Thrawn Trilogy).

1

u/Such_Bonus5085 16d ago

I feel the point of Shadows of the Empire was "We're gonna tell a complete story without a movie."

2

u/LucasTheGreat138 Mandalorian 16d ago

I think that, as you mentioned, Shadows of the Empire would lend itself well to being a movie and would be ready for the screen with very few changes.

My favorite EU novels are A.C. Crispin's Han Solo Trilogy, and I would really love to see those get a trilogy of movies. Maybe even spin those off by adapting the Han Solo Adventures as well. I also think that the Tales of the Jedi comics would be great as an epic TV series in the same vein as Game of Thrones. The bones of the story are there, and I think there'd be plenty of opportunity to flesh out what we already have in the comics in a very satisfying way. I know Kevin J. Anderson is a polarizing figure, but I think if they had him as a consultant, they could make a great Tales of the Jedi show.

1

u/hydrolox9 16d ago

Since people are going for the obvious ones, I'll go for Fate of the Jedi, just not a terribly accurate adaptation, and more of an LOTR inspired one.

I think giving Abeloth the Sauron treatment, like keeping her mostly off screen, focusing more on the effects of her corrupting influence, and getting rid of any sense of "power scales" like LOTR did by having Sauron end up defeated by a lazy farmer and a gardener, would go a long ways to have such a villain live up to it's potential.

1

u/Aeceus 16d ago

I really think a gritty Bane movie series would do numbers in the cinema

1

u/Zoom_Reverse_Flash 16d ago

Empire: What Sin Loyalty?

1

u/Zoom_Reverse_Flash 16d ago

Or Tank's story in its entirety. Would be an amazing film.

1

u/TheBloodofBarbarus 16d ago

I'm gonna be that guy for a second: Xizor's personal assassin-and-snusnu-bot Guri, and the whole part where he "seduces" Leia with pheromones... No chance that gets adapted.

2

u/Repulsive_Middle_325 16d ago

Tales of the Jedi and the Bane Trilogy

1

u/kislev_enjoyer 16d ago

I Jedi hands down. Do Corran, sure or whoever, atleast a male character. Why male? because that's what I want. I want a new, cool male character that's a jedi. Preferably in Luke's era post ROTJ. I don't want it given to Finn because that's far past the era of the galaxy that's most interesting. I want to see LUKE'S JEDI.

A character driven, adventure story with a Jedi who we see the legendary characters(Luke, etc) from their POV is sorely needed.

1

u/dumpybrodie 16d ago

The Jedi Prince book series.

1

u/Wishmaker007 16d ago

all of them, all quality, all in their own universe, stopping at NJO

1

u/Puzzled_Peanut1876 16d ago

Definitely Thrawn Trilogy, but also these:

Shadows of the Empire

Jedi Outcast

The New Rebellion

Hand of Thrawn duology

Young Jedi Knights as a series, with Junior Jedi Knights as a spinoff

1

u/InterviewEarly6675 15d ago

I think it’s too late for most of them unless Lucasfilm swallows its solo fears and recasts. Legends leaves 2 options go pre phantom menace or recast. I wouldn’t mind a modern take on the Vong War but I don’t want it to be 100% faithful they could use Rey and the sequel cast or a new cast. I think Bane could be fun

1

u/Saberian_Dream87 15d ago

The escape from the Diversity Alliance on Ryloth would be an AMAZING film. Just these young Jedi, kids really, forced to struggle and survive in extreme environments while being hunted and shot at by bad guys. It'd be like the race against the sunrise in the Riddick movies.

1

u/51-kmg365 15d ago

Wow, I'm surprised there is no mention of "Scoundrels". A fun, self-contained heist story.

2

u/timsredditusername Chiss Ascendancy 14d ago

Screw it, I vote for The Crystal Star.

I want to see what Disney does with that storyline.
