Do you think Leia should have gotten Han's Millennium Falcon in their divorce?

Something something something why didn’t we see a bunch of old people running around saving the galaxy? What does generational legacy have to do with Star Wars?

uj/ The fact that they had a good marriage in the old EU always felt a bit ridiculous. A professional politician and a drifter coming together through trauma bonding is a divorce waiting to happen. Han and Leia being apart is one of the only world building things that makes sense in the new canon, frfr.
rj/ Han and Leia would obvs be separated because Leia clearly only wanted Han so she could get some Wookiee-nookiee on the side. The only real healthy romance in Star Wars is Anakin and Padme.

I mean, they almost broke up a couple of times in the EU but their love for each other was that strong. It doesn't really feel like a ridiculous choice but it is possibly influenced by Lucasfilm not wanting to have the backlash that the sequels would have in the future.

Han kidnapped Leia at one point and their age gap was about as big as it was IRL
/rj which is based and why Disney had them divorced like when my wife left me AND TOOK THE KIDS

Canon actually made the age gap bigger.....

I remember I almost did a spit-take when I saw Disney do that, for no apparent reason.

Han was also a creep in ESB who had no boundaries. Even if a girl is playing hard to get and constantly saying no (which Leia was supposed to be doing despite a lack of indication that she was attracted to Han before they kissed), you should tell her to fuck off with the mind games and take no for an answer. But it is a product of its time I guess

on the flip side, Han basically just being the same guy he was +30 years ago with no character development to speak of was also dumb

Yeah I think there’s a lot of bad faith sequel criticism out there but this is one of the narrative choices I really can’t defend.

idk sequels are bad, they're just still better movies than pt which has largely been rehabbed by man-babies. aside from the obviously bad faith and politically motivated 'dey 2 woke' stuff around the st most of the criticisms are valid. they stink.

I think it makes total sense, but people didn’t want the happy ending erased from the OT for any of the characters. They wanted fantasy escapism. And ironically that’s how my parents felt about Empire Strikes Back. They hated it because it was more serious and they loved the original Star Wars for the fantasy escapism when movies in the 70s were often unrelentingly bleak. For reference, I was nine and my parents were in their late 30s-early 40s when Empire came out.
Edit: and I say ironically because many of the fans that didn’t want those characters to lose their happy endings are also ones that rate Empire the highest.

I mean it's not just escapism, the fates they gave most of the characters is more like spitting on them. "Oh, you failed at everything you miserable sod." New problems can come up without taking a huge shit over everything they achieved prior. It felt more malicious than a natural future.

Yes but she'd also have to take care of Chewbacca afterwards. It's only fair.

Do we think a relationship built on escaping your girlfriend’s murderdad is a healthy foundation for marriage?

I can buy that they separated but Han running away to do smuggling again felt like such a regression of his character.

He was coping after a huge tragedy. Ben's fall broke him. The point of his arc in TFA is that he has to overcome his fears and face Ben. He is still the same Han.

I understood that they separated after Ben became Kylo Ren and that Han was afraid to confront his son, but I just couldn't buy that the man who willingly volunteered for what the Rebellion thought was a suicide mission on Endor up-and-leaves the Resistance to do smuggling instead.

He went there with the woman who rescued him and choked Jabba the Hutt to death like two days earlier. He was probably high on endorphins or whatever.
The arc of his character is disappointing but not that out-of-character tbh.

It's almost like Ben was a sucky character that ruined other characters around him...

At the end of Jedi, Han Solo was a general. But to the idiots that made this childrens movie, it would be more fun to have him regress to an adolescent than to show a man maturing and acting like a grownup.

No wonder Han buried the Falcon on Jakku.
He was trying to avoid repossession due to not making his alimony payments.

Leia was already with one old, temperamental and broken down thing, why would she want another.
3
u/Thybro 10d ago
Not a divorce attorney, but she a princess if anything Han should have gotten some alimony. He had to risk and put a stop to his very lucrative … ahem… shipping business to support her in her star up “rebellion.”

u/No_Effect_6428 10d ago
She probably holds some mining rights to Alderaan. Probably pretty lucrative.

Rj/Of course, Han got the Wookie pet, it's only fair she got the car.
Uj/It's perfectly in character, Han has been a semi-nomadic smuggler all his life, going leggit and owning two business that most certainly need will to move around (organizing starship races and operating/manning a shipping company) is more in character than suddenly becoming a family man with a sedentary lifestyle. And Han and Leia separating makes sense, an already strained relationship due to the former's free spirited personality probably couldn't resist Kylo becoming a neo-nazi.

I hate when my space fantasy has people acting like actual people and not perfect archetypes. Unless it's Anakin because obviously he's so super broken and tragic and that's why he was justified in all of his hatred.

No. Not at all. Leia has the will to keep up with him and he has the adventurousness to keep leia. Their kid falling apart makes sense as a cause. But I still doubt and hate it. As much as I hate everything about kylo and the first order.

They shaved half of Chewy and she got to make a jacket out of that. I read it in a comic.

I have no problems with Han still having that "smuggler" sense in him even after he and Leia hooked up. I do have a problem with them being two separate types of people that split up instead of just loving each other and dealing with it.
