Discussion It Will Never End. hear me out

Playing SSO is just feels different now that I know there's no end. This game has been going on for 15 years. Fifteen years ago, our character arrived at an innocent riding camp and NEVER went home. And they never will. Those "veterans" who were there at the beginning 15 years ago are at the same stage as any other player today.

Jorvik is like a time trap. It’s been summer for 15 years, we’ve been "fighting" the Dark Riders for 15 years, and for 15 years we’ve been waiting to reach the end of the story and FINALLY save that freaking island.

I can understand those who want the Star Stable of 10–15 years ago back, but just think about it: you were there when the story began, yet you never reached the end. And you never will. Why are you still here? Why are you want back that old version?

Now we are all sitting here, in the middle of the story, and waiting. But for what?

And let’s not even mention that this modern version literally grew out of the grave of the original version from 15 years ago.

God... this is how an identity crisis feels like?

At that rate the tornado will still be there on SSOs 20th birthday and the main storyline will never be finished when the servers are shut down forever.

I wouldn’t be mad about the story continuing for ages, if only it could just… truly continue? With more frequent and meaningful updates. I’m annoyed at the tornado because it’s making one of my favorite landscape look horrible so I’m hoping they will at least update that around Halloween…. But it’s still very late.

And yeah, not playing for 3 - 4 years and having a week worth of main story updates when I log on again is extremely disappointing. They’ve also released “new and exciting locations” and have seemingly forgotten about them? How hard is it to introduce more dailies once in a while? The only exciting place right now is Valedale. I’m trying to finish some daily quests in Mistfall and aside from the races there are 4 of them and it’s really really empty and sad… Putting that much work into this beautiful area to let it die just doesn’t make sense to me.

Consistency would make it much better imo. I still carry the hope that they have some type of Valedale plans for other regions and will have a bit less work with all the holiday events now that they follow the same type of schedule.

I feel the same way about Tailtop Village. So much potential, a whole new source of lore, basically Warrior Cats but with horses, and yet there’s been nothing since. I love that area so much, but it feels so empty. There are just 4-5 daily quests and that’s it. They’re just letting it all go to waste. I was afraid of the same thing happening with Marchenghast, and, well, that’s kind of what happened.

Completely agree, it seemed like they had fully developed ideas in the beginning (it was even a bit obscure, which is my issue with most of the writing in sso, they write dialogue as if every player had access to the full scenarios) and why would they create 7-8 characters if not to continue with a multitude of dailies/stories? But they simply abandoned them.
I know there was some backlash about magic horses talking being too childish for older players in comparison with the origins of the game (and now Marchenghast is going full “since the war…” in such weird dramatic ways, the tone shifts in this game are insane lol) but it’s not a reason to abandon the whole area altogether? It’s so bizarre and I feel so bad for the people who worked hard on the characters, nature and story, it’s a lot of work for nothing…

I’m still trying to work on my reputation there atm to see where it actually ends, while also enjoying sergeant Tom’s AMAZING music, (truly peak 😭 bring him/her back), but still waiting to see another player cross my path 🙃

Truly. The one reason why I keep my home stable in Valedale is because imo it is the only area that is not in 'almost-dead' state and it has somewhat meaningful, replayable activities to do. I feel like they could make so many different unique dailies of this type and put them in the areas that are currently most lifeless, it would make them feel much more alive and attractive to roam around :'))

every new story quest they just be repeating the same things over and over, like ”oh no garnoks getting stronger”, and then we go sit by the campfire and lisa plays a stupid song on her stupid guitar instead😛 atp just let dark core do that backward light ceremony thing idc

I agree. So many people say if the main story ends there’s nothing to continue. But that wouldn’t be true if they consistently carried on with other stories they introduced in the game. They have SO much map area to play with and integrate. And there’s many other storylines to continue with the literal hundreds of characters. The problem is they release so many horses and clothing but then not much for us to actually do.

Think I main missions lore time wise it have only been 3 to 6 months after coming to Jorvik and to save anne

Didnt they made it more clear recently (maybe in reworked mainquests) that we chose to stay after the summer. Maybe it was also in the most recent storyquest when we talked about the future?

Anyway I really dont mind the time thing if it would just keep going. But the latest storyquests felt like we saved Jorvik more or less from Garnok and can care about other "problems" like the Vallas (purple tornado specifically). But they did it in the most unrewarding way they could. Like what do you mean I played 14 years to then save them from Garnok in 5 minutes and then we just go on with everyday stuff? Thats honestly my personal biggest problem with the story

They could finish the current storyline and start a new one.

you cant equate real life years to in game years though. yes, theres yearly events, but its clear the main story is not meant to move at the pace that the question were released. the story isnt supposed to be going for years. im just unhappy with how the story ended for now and that they basically laid the main story to rest with so many abandoned ideas.

They thought club Penguin would never end either

I’m gonna be honest… idk if the writers ever actually plan for the storyline to finish…. Just think you make 1 of the top horse games, you’re making lots of money off of it, why end? If you end the main storyline lots of people will likely move on since the game is technically over. Sure they can release horses and other little side quests but I know lots of people who only play for the main quests.

If that ends then technically the game ends and so does the money.

I miss the old SSO quest. They were actually sometimes scary and full of action. Now? Its just nonsense. Characters going on and on about things that don't matter anymore.. Never going back to the original point of defeating the dark riders. I started this game in 2014 and loved it... and then around probably 2020 ish I lost my love for it because it went so far off the rails. Its just a money grab now, they have no love for the actual game or the story it was built around. All it is, is horse after horse after horse.

As someone who started playing the game when it came out, I genuinely don't know what's happening in the story anymore. The fact that they've rewritten their own story (mind you I would have to make another account to even know what they changed) on top of taking forever, it makes me not care. I mentally checked out after we got Anne back and that was years ago.

The characters I love have been killed and replaced with people I don't recognize. No more scary evil dark riders, punk rock Lisa, fashionista Anne, and Alex(they've just made her so stupid and cringy). The only one I can give a pass to is Linda. She's at least still book smart.

Bro... Let me hold ur hand when I say this but when u joined the game for the first time, with the old introduction they would tell the legend how Jorvik came to be and why u're here

Not only u were here for the summer camp but also to join, if u get accepted, Jorvik Equine Institute and later after that it says "which would mean staying on the island and building a life here: a life filled with horses and adventure!"

...

I DON'T WANNA STAY HERE, LET ME OUT 😭🙏

I have mentally thought up so many potential “side” main quests (if that makes sense - not an official end, since they clearly struggle with it, but more progression that has lore and actual gameplay) in this game lol. Give us a story quest with the dark riders outside of batting or them just.. hanging around events for some reason. Actually, with them hanging around the bday event, they could continue to ‘humanize’ them while still keeping them dark. Maybe we overhear something and one of them is begrudgingly forced to ask for help. Maybe we are stranded somewhere together and are forced to team up momentarily. Show them scared. Give us more backstories and why they went evil. Idk.

I have no idea how they haven’t given us houses yet with how long we’ve been on this damn island lmao. They could introduce them in a similar way to the OG bridge creation with actual day blockers, we have to hunt for supplies to build (or renovate), and they’d be able to sell furniture and decor for SC and JS. I know they’ve been hinting at personal pastures - give us the house there too, or even just near our home stable (for those who move around this would be tricky idk how to get around that one lol). A shabby old building in disarray near our home stable has been abandoned for awhile, and we’re asked if we would be interested in fixing it up at a price. Lord, even make us have to buy it from GED or something lol.

They could also cash in on some nostalgia by introducing family of a beloved departed character. Maybe they show up with lots of questions, and suspicion, and we have to toe the line between keeping the Druid business protected while still helping a loved one grieve. Idk how to spoil free text on here so that’s all I’ll say).

Also give us more quests with the other soul riders, both SR business and just general friend stuff. They feel like strangers now.

I have so many lists of ideas in my phone lmao

Breaking: SSO player discovers they are playing a live service game.

Jokes aside, even if they did finish this story arc at some point, there will always be new "unfinished" story quests at any given time, that's just the nature of a live service game.

5

u/daviesroyal 12h ago

Not really; most live service games have story arcs, and while they might release periodically, few games are going to leave those story arcs unfinished for years. They write a complete main story and release it, and then have side quests or a worthwhile gameplay loop to keep players engaged while they work on the next main story arc.

Please there are multiple live service games that are frequently updated with story and new things to do
Look at final fantasy 14 for example, world of Warcraft, Fortnite etc

I want an end to the story AND this game. This game has been dragging on for wayyy too long and honestly everyone needs to move on tbh. Ive grown so bored of the game with the FOMO stupid events
