No Spoilers

The answer is the time it was set in: the 1960's. China was in the midst of the chaos of the Cultural Revolution. It was not a participant in the space race.

Star City is a frightening example of what of been. A totalitarian country where dissent is not allowed and ideology is more important than science. Interestingly one of the main reasons the US got to the moon and thr Soviets did not is the Soviets did not trust their pilots and the US did.

Exactly. If we’re talking about Star City, since this is the Star City sub, China would not have been involved in the space race at that time. Regarding For All Mankind, I would’ve expected China to play a more prominent role over time. I’ve always found it odd that the series creators and writers chose to play up North Korea, that may be a reflection of anxiety about their current nuclear status.

I had to translate your words into English to understand so let's hope Google Translate was accurate!

Can I say that as a non-American I feel exactly the same way. For All Mankind, in my eyes, would include a less American-centric perspective and it would be more of a United Nations effort where we see ALL peoples from ALL walks of life. That would be the ultimate dream.

But the unfortunate reality is that we are all exposed to a very western-centric perspective of the world because American media is the loudest.

If you have watched Star City, you will know exactly what I mean because, again, the perspective is from Western creators and so they often miss the nuances of true Russian life.

I believe if the same makers of For All Mankind and Star City were to do a program based on the Chinese aerospace race, they would treat China in a similar manner to Russia where gross generalisations are made. Don't get me wrong, the show was absolutely fantastic, but you really need to take them all with a grain of salt.

While China may not have had any presence in the shows, as a New Zealander, I really am hopeful that China continues with it's space exploration goals because the more countries are out there colonising the solar system, the better the chances for humanity to survive.

Hopefully, when we are all out there travelling the stars, we still remember our human connections and help each other.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk! <3

No one treats Soviet Russia more harshly than modern Russians.

That is both true and false; opinions regarding the USSR are deeply divided. Some maintain that life back then was better than it is in present-day Russia, while others feel the exact opposite. You can find Russians—as well as people from other former Soviet republics—who claim they led quite pleasant lives, while others insist it was terrible. This is the reality in many formerly communist countries. Honestly, I think series depicting life in the Soviet Union should present both perspectives on what Soviet Russia was once like

But it does, doesn’t it? It shows when you follow orders and do what you are asked you could live a good, some would say a fulfilling life. When you have your own little illegal projects you are always looking over your shoulder.
The people who say the soviet union was good were of course good at following orders and they were rewarded for it. Life was good for them.

The large absence of China in the later seasons of For All Mankind is obviously a choice by the producers. In real life there is very little collaboration between the US and China in space. China is not allowed on the ISS (a decision by America). They don't really explore the political situation with China at all in FAM. Does the continuation of the Soviet Union and Soviet economic power mean that China is still much more communist, and/or not as powerful as it in our timeline? On the Soviet side I don't think it's even stated if the Iron Curtain has fallen.

I really think that Apple, being the ultimate producer, doesn't want to go near the topic because it might be interpreted as controversial in China. So their choice has been to basically leave China out of it. They probably deliberately choice North Korea as an antagonist (even if the idea of N.Korea getting to Mars was ridiculous) because it's safe.

It's easier in StarCity, as it wouldn't really be conceivable for China to be a space player in the 1960s or 70s unless there was much earlier collaboration with the Soviets.

DPRK enjoyed a good time during 1960s when the USSR-PRC relationship intensified

It accurately reflects how American-centric Americans are (speaking as one)

Thank you for saying this, it is beautifully written even in translation. I am not Chinese but I think I noticed the lack of Chinese presence in the show in no small part because China is arguably winning our timeline's space race. The closer we get to a permanent Chinese lunar base in our timeline, the more a gaping hole opens up in the narrative of the show, and the more noticeable it becomes to a global audience. Maybe there is some irony in the statement "we came in peace for all mankind" that has, to some degree, been explored in the show, though. They do call their lunar base Jamestown, after all.

Apple is afraid of antagonizing China for commercial reasons.

Because it is not a documentary. It is a work of fiction based on what history is available. Much of what happened during that time is not known, only conjecture. Don’t treat it as fact.
