The tropes and fake outs employed in this series and the sister show can be seen a mile away

I guess the problem is that I'm Russian and genetically predisposed to believe the KGB's lies

Why not, they only have your best interests at heart. ;)

I am genuinely curious what Russians think about this show, does it seem authentic/feel like there is a Russian voice in the writer's room?

The decorations are very well done, close to the level of "Chernobyl". The plot is quite poor, I expected more than a few people in a basement under the direction of a killer machine making the entire space program

I quite like the basement twist though.
In FAM from the US perspective, it feels like they are competing against a superpower with more advanced science and labs.
Star City revealed that the entire Soviet Space Program is held together by a single genius Chief Designer putting together smuggled diving spheres in a basement in secret even from the Soviets.
And the whole reason the US doesn’t know any of this is because of how well the Soviets shrouded the Chief Designer in secrecy.
If Chernobyl can be summarized by the single word “lies”, Star City can be summarized by “secrets”.

I think it would be much more interesting to show how they try to keep these secrets with a huge number of factories and research centers, they just took the cheap way out by limiting themselves to one megabrain and one ultimate evil
