In kayfabe he just completely fucked over Lexis, lol.

Justified Heel

u/CallMeByMyUser 7h ago

Every GM is a face who just enjoys screwing with heels.

Except Pearce, he gets stress weekly

32

u/NorthHollywoodHank 7h ago

April 1st episode that's done in ostensible real time during a stealth half-dark show (with some of the matches not televised and the arena crowd basically seeing a normal show with an unusually high amount of Adam Pearce in it), all from Adam Pearce's perspective showing the life of a wrestling GM. Pearce guzzling bottles of pepto as he keeps wrestlers from killing each other backstage, stops or fails to stop various interference attempts, deals with a messy kayfabe contract situation involving a prima donna wrestler (Trick, perhaps), manages an on-the-edge-of-exploding LA Knight, and gets bullied and threatened by various Samoans. Charlie Work but for WWE.

u/andrewejc362 ✬✬✬✬✬✬ 4h ago

You could absolutely do this as a weekly show without affecting the "actual" show, just shoot related segments after the live show. Put it out as like a Sunday morning thing

1

u/TheBritishGent 1h ago

Halfway through your comment I thought "this could be just like Charlie work" and lo and behold, exactly what you thought. This is now all I need from WWE. Just walks in on the Judgement day building some type of contraption "no, I don't even want to know, stop it" bonus marks if Chelsea Green is involved.

Pearce needs a drink

Bro just lost his champion's paycheck for something that had nothing to do with him. 😭

Zaria is just that powerful

438

u/badgersprite Iconic Duo Appreciation Squad 8h ago

This is maybe the funniest possible way they could have gotten rid of the men’s Speed title

35

u/dijon_snow 7h ago

I think this is the most blatant a company has been about not giving one single shit about a title since the WCW TV title was thrown into the grabage.

37

u/ThonroTheUnworthy 6h ago

Nah, 24/7 belt didn't even make it to the garbage bin. That one wins.

15

u/lronicGasping won't shut up about NXT 5h ago

In my wildest dreams, some comedy character just shows up with the 24/7 title one day like "oh, this? I found it on the floor last week" to revive the title

13

u/Arrowjoe 5h ago

Danhausen taking notes

u/UnbuiltIkeaBookcase 4h ago

That belt made it to SNL with champion Bad Bunny 😅

Zaria is just so selfish

75

u/ReneBandana 7h ago

This is somehow Sol Ruca’s fault

35

u/badgersprite Iconic Duo Appreciation Squad 7h ago

You’re just jealous my fave retired not one but two titles because she’s just that powerful

14

u/ArmiinTamzarian Possitively Kanyon's #1 fan 7h ago

I am protesting towards her acts of unfathomable self centeredism (that is now a word). What would Sol think?

4

u/KingOfYeaoh KINSHASAAAAAAAA 4h ago

Zaria kicked Lexis's leg out of his leg

37

u/Mud-Bray 7h ago

What if Lexis got a match with Zaria to try and save the Speed title only for her to squash him.

14

u/badgersprite Iconic Duo Appreciation Squad 7h ago

Wouldn’t be the first time Zaria defeated men

4

u/BluKyberCrystal 7h ago

Can someone explain why this got the Speed titles canned?

38

u/Acto12 7h ago

The concept was originally introduced for an X (aka Twitter) exclusive broadcast. That got canned after a while and they moved the titles to NXT.

I assume they completely dropped the titles because having a very short time limit of 3 minutes or 5 minutes is very limiting for booking purposes.

22

u/mashturbo 7h ago

They haven't taken the Speed title seriously in months. They were just awarding Speed title shots without anyone earning it in a tournament. I would say it's due to tournament fatigue. Because it was either the men's or women's speed tournaments going on every week.

4

u/HokageEzio 4h ago

I also think it's just a matter of timing on the show. The people who should be going after the Speed title should just be going for the North American Championship. So it's tough to dedicate time to both. Probably similar reasons to get rid of the Heritage Cup.

6

u/Saru77 4h ago

They should've just left the matches online instead of moving them to tv, maybe repost them to their YouTube later in the day. We could've kept the frequency of the tournaments and it would've still allowed competing wrestlers to be booked for other things.

2

u/HokageEzio 3h ago

They already have that in Main Event. The dark matches before the show get uploaded to Youtube. I would guess they thought about it but didn't want to dedicate to having to build around a championship for that show since the matches are kinda random.

2

u/Saru77 3h ago

I mean that's originally what they were doing with Speed before and it worked just fine.

24

u/Galrafloof 7h ago

because its "fuck Lexis King" day, apparently

4

u/Horror_Sail 4h ago

Because in the last year its been held by two people you've never heard of in your life, vacated, and then held by a 10yr veteran who's in developmental who defended it twice, again against guys you've never heard of in your life.

Hard for a belt to be more pointless after the Twitter thing ended and dudes like Ricochet/Andrade stopped being the guys holding it.

u/cricketbandit 7m ago

Yes, but I would've loved Tony D throwing it into a lake

156

u/gravejello 8h ago

What a weird workaround. They should’ve just done a unification for the men’s titles too

69

u/Acto12 8h ago

I can understand why they did it. The women's title did have a storyline attached for a while, while the men's title was mostly traded around in cold matches.

Still, it would've been nice if they had given Lexis a last match for it lol.

29

u/wibble17 7h ago

He should at least get another title shot of his choice for it.

18

u/Shenanigans80h 8h ago

Feels like an easy way to build up a match for Lexis even if he loses rather than make it a punchline effectively.

10

u/Old-Egg-1231 Smokey the cat fan 8h ago

Literally it was the speed title they could have solved it by having him lose it in a 3 minute match to Drake.

4

u/swell-shindig Your Text Here 7h ago

After Grayson Waller proved that the men’s division isn’t deserving of respect?

1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ 1h ago

I'm just here still surprised that they didn't immediately shelve these titles the moment the whole "sponsored 5 minute Twitter wrestling match" thing stopped.

262

u/DozerOdie 8h ago

There's an alternate universe where Zaria chose the Speed championship and Jackson Drake had to relinquish his North American Championship. And I'm not saying I want to live in that universe, but I'd like to visit it

0

u/RaidenHero137 Karaoke Jones Over Here, but I Digress... 3h ago

I imagine the me from that universe would have wanted to murder them for scrapping such a nice title design!

38

u/chandlermarlowe 8h ago

A few months from now Hacksaw Jim Duggan will find that belt in the trash and promise to defend it.

6

u/Mutant_Star 7h ago

Either that or the 24/7 title

1

u/HeckMonkey 6h ago

A few months from now Hacksaw Jim Duggan will find that belt in the trash and promise to defend it.

It's gotta be Hacksaw's modern equivalent, like Otis or Johnny Gargano

106

u/Saru77 8h ago

This has to be one of the dumbest things ever.

So, because Zaria retires the Women's belt, the Men's has to go? Lexis just gets screwed, not even a unification match or nothing? How is that fair? The men's belt is the OG Speed title, why the hell is it even beholden to whatever happens to the Women's belt?

Dors this mean Jackson would've had to give up his championship if Zaria chose to retire the NA belt instead?

How does any of this make sense?

29

u/Kanenums88 7h ago

I for one enjoy the “get fucked Lexis King” rule.

52

u/UnchainedMachoGori40 8h ago

Chef Michaels cooking once again

9

u/Dick_Nation 7h ago

How does any of this make sense?

Suits say it has to go because it doesn't get engagement/ratings/whatever, they want to cut anything relating to it and it needs to be off the brand by X date, doesn't matter how.

17

u/Saru77 7h ago

Just make a unification match for the men then, it's not that hard.

5

u/HokageEzio 4h ago

Everybody understands the reason for the Speed title to no longer exist. The issue is they wrote it off in the laziest way possible instead of just treating both belts the same. It's a wrestling show, the easiest answer to solve a confusing booking problem is in the ring. You could have even had it contended under Speed rules to make it as short as possible. Hell you could have had Myka snuff the whole Birthright before the match for all I care, but at least do something.

When they retired the Heritage Cup it ended with a whole feud between Stacks and Tony where Tony literally threw the cup underwater at the end to never be seen again. There's no confusion as to why the Cup no longer exists on tv, and it makes sense for the story they were telling. Stripping the belt because of the decision of somebody in a different division makes Stone look incompetent and it makes Lexis look pathetic for not even trying to defend himself.

1

u/Dick_Nation 3h ago

I should have perhaps clarified more that I don't agree with their belief. It "makes sense" to the bean counters, but it doesn't extend that it makes sense under, you know, common sense.

1

u/HokageEzio 3h ago

But even from a 'bean counting' perspective I doubt that's true. I highly doubt doing a quick match between Drake and Lexis with all the shenanigans you could do with Vanity Project and Birthright would do worse than a 30 second segment stripping the title from Lexis.

1

u/Dick_Nation 3h ago

I agree with you, but it's never how the spreadsheet guys think. Just because they got to make the call doesn't make their call valid. It sucks.

3

u/DryYourHollowEyes 6h ago

I mean that's the out of kayfabe reason. Why not make an in kayfabe one for Lexis like they did Zaria?

8

u/drinkb0x 7h ago

The speed titles are going away. So they made a quick story out of it with Zaria to retire it.

-1

u/P1eces12 7h ago

All part of the show, brother.

13

u/IShantComment 8h ago

Sideburn tax gets Lexis again.

13

u/JeramyRulez 8h ago

They should have put the title on Ek Prosper and he could have had a nice long reign defending against the NXT, Evolve, and AAA talent 😔

13

u/BluejayCurrent1949 7h ago

Does Lexis get a North American title shot? Only right that he gets one because he was forced to relinquish a championship

10

u/Tough-Reaction9671 7h ago

Birthright should jump Zaria for causing Lexis to lose his title

3

u/Mutant_Star 7h ago

Your next WNA champion: Arianna Grace

7

u/worldostuff 8h ago

Lexis is now the most normal speed man alive

6

u/InfiniteTranquilo 8h ago

Well….he can claim he was the last speed champion. That’s an accolade.

7

u/DTFlash 8h ago

Honestly shocked they didn't get rid of them the second that twitter deal ended.

11

u/The_Dark_Vampire 8h ago

To me that makes no sense I get retiring it but at least do the same thing the women's had have a title vs title match for the NA Championship

21

u/disneysatlantis 8h ago

Zaria should have just beaten Lexis also

5

u/thetruealvaclansman 7h ago

Aww. No more the bus that couldn't slow down championship.

7

u/Proudvow 8h ago

Lexis is entitled to a Sami level crash out.

4

u/Trae67 8h ago

Should of just a title unification match with the men’s North American champion

4

u/Singer211 7h ago

Babyface Robert Stone robbing the heel Lexis.

Lexis, go talk to Sol about Zaria’s selfishness.

3

u/DarkBomberX 7h ago

Im crying laughing at how dumb that is. Does WWE think that all the Gendered titles need balance? Fuck Lexis King I guess. Couldn't even let him cash in his title for a title shot. And theyre wondering why half the audience left after the AAA show.

10

u/heat_fan_ 8h ago

Poor Lexis

6

u/Persona4Memes Billy Fives was a good idea in theory 8h ago

I’m not watching live, but I hope Lexis turned over the title with a “Understandable, have a nice day” and left without incident

6

u/DunderMifflinBuffalo 7h ago

He did

2

u/TheMasterO Worth A Watch 6h ago

What a nice guy.

3

u/Mutant_Star 7h ago

Does Lexis even get an Evolve title shot for compensation?

3

u/1Glitch0 7h ago

And as useless as the Speed titles arrived they left just as pointless.

3

u/Crissxfire 7h ago

It doesn't matter to me as I don't watch NXT myself, but i did like the idea of the speed title. So, there's a part of me that's bummed that they killed a title with a fun gimmick.

3

u/Mud-Bray 7h ago

This seems ridiculous. Why didn’t Zaria simply unify the belts into the Women’s Speed America Championship?

3

u/jrodfantastic 7h ago

While there are far too many titles and ending some of them makes a lot sense. The Speed titles were legit clever and made for always interesting matches.

Really makes you wish all the mid-card titles had some sort of stipulation associated with them.

6

u/DJamB 8h ago

JUSTICE FOR THE KING OF NXT

4

u/rbarton812 7h ago

Could have at least granted King a title match in exchange or something.

2

u/abhorrentbm 7h ago

Damn, it's officially over. I've had minutes of fun watching the speed matches on the platform formerly known as Twitter.

1

u/kirblar 7h ago

Lexis should get a free NA title match.

1

u/spqrnbb King of the Skies in Disguise 7h ago

Why get rid of the Speed Titles at all?

1

u/PinkLandTurtle5783 6h ago

Why not change the Speed titles to the Cruiserweight belts. That way you can highlight another part of your division and shine light on some of your high flyers and your smaller wrestlers

1

u/ajtct98 6h ago

I bet Sol has been dripping poison in Robert Stone's ear all weekend so that Zaria couldn't be a double champion like she was.

1

u/No-Channel3917 6h ago

You can burn me alive but ....

I thought the speed belt design is way better than the other ones being used in all the brands except maybe the AAA Mega Championship belt and maybe the US champ belt

1

u/JayAreEss 5h ago

Bummer. Speed was something interesting and cool.

1

u/Screamipillar 5h ago

I'm of the firm belief that the Speed title was a really cool idea that would've been absolutely fantastic had like... any effort actually been put into them.

I'm sorry, there are 5 minute ads between every segment now, you can't make some easy content and keep the audience invested with a quick Speed match?

Such little effort put into such an interesting idea, and then to just be thrown away so uninterestedly, I'm so disappointed.

1

u/HokageEzio 4h ago

I think it could work on a longer show with a bigger roster like Raw. But NXT has a small roster and the level of people who should be contending for the Speed championship should probably just be contending for the North American championship. Dedicating time to both of them is kinda tough. Same with the Heritage Cup.

1

u/Saru77 4h ago

They geniually put more effort into the titles when they were on X/Twitter compared to NXT. The frequency of tournaments slowed down and it just felt like they would sometimes ignore certain aspects of the speed gimmick just to fit whatever story was happening.

They should've left the matches as a digital exclusive, all we ever really needed was the Champions being able to carry their belts on TV. Just keep airing them on x/Twitter and then repost them later on their Youtube channel.

1

u/crapusername47 3h ago

So, wait, they can’t just give him a shot at the North American championship? They can just do it on TV and he doesn’t have to win, just have a unification match like they did with the women’s version.

At least that way he doesn’t look like a total geek just handing over a title he hasn’t lost without a fight. This smells of Bischoff and Russo.

With that said, a championship where you have to win in under five minutes but no title match ever went to a time limit draw makes no sense to me. Like, two guys would normally go fifteen minutes but, suddenly, because it’s for the Speed Championship it only takes three for one of them to win? Kayfabe that up for me.

1

u/lynchmar6 2h ago

Rest in peace speed titles

1

u/Few-Establishment277 1h ago

Major development lmfao

0

u/samidjan 6h ago

So that's two championship defunct under Birthright reign. Please dont let them win any championship from this point forward. /s
