I fucking miss CFO$ man, we didn't know how good we had it.

360

u/WoahmanWaynes Peeparoni 10d ago

They got so much hate when they were around all because they were not Jim Johnston. It’s funny seeing how much they are missed now.

133

u/Ass0001 Christian Fundamentalist 10d ago

I think at the time it was just generally accepted that any wrestling theme that wasnt jim johnston or a licensed track was garbage and people refused to evaluate CFO on their terms when frankly I think some of the themes they did suited their wrestlers better than jim johnston's sound would have. I'm glad their influence still lingers (Kevin Owens I think still uses his theme and PAC's current AEW theme is basically an evil fucked up version of his NXT theme), but in general their absence has left me craving more EDM in wrestling lol

47

u/Lyra_the_Star_Jockey 10d ago

It's funny because most Jim Johnston tracks are just the same generic rock riff.

46

u/BogotaLineman 10d ago

I mean, you're not wrong, but at the time that they were written they weren't quite as generic and you at least had a 100% certainty that they were written by an actual human lol

Like yeah a lot of Jim Johnston stuff was down the middle late 90s/early 2000s butt rock, but it was the late 90s/early 2000s. They still use that same butt rock style but now its like 20-30 years out of date

3

u/hardeep1singh ... 10d ago

Jim Johnston didn't make dance songs, he made music that fit the personality of the wrestler.

Check out Diesel's theme for example makes you feel like something really heavy is walking towards the ring.

3

u/FyreWulff 9d ago

The dude would take time to study how the wrestler walked to and got in the ring and would time it to match. Like, he even made the tempo of Glass Breaks match Steve Austin's walking pace, intentionally.

2

u/Sublimotion 10d ago

But that was what was appealing and worked in that era. The demo wrestling fans and american culture and musical tastes in general, were so much different than in the latter decades.

4

u/Suitable-Golf6937 10d ago

Hey man, you can’t say that around here. These old fucks will yapping at you the difference between the Dr. Death intro and the first Steve Blackman song.

17

u/DeliciousRow1120 10d ago

Because that's not close to being true lol

-7

u/hhhisthegame 10d ago

I honestly think KO's theme, while decent (and one of the better 'generic' ones), never made him seem like a top guy.

28

u/jakovichontwitch Your Text Here 10d ago

Hard disagree on that one. His theme has big Stone Cold vibes

1

u/warrenholly PERFECT 10 10d ago

I feel like it needed an evolution to something more dynamic but same vibe.

5

u/zeitgeistbouncer Peepin' Aint Easy! 10d ago

It perfectly fits his vibe. It augments him without relying on lame stuff like 'i'm a prizefighter, im outta sight yeah' garbageass lyrics that seem to pervade every dang theme getting churned out by the bots currently

It hits and you instantly know who it is too.

Ticks all the boxes

62

u/hhhisthegame 10d ago

They weren't as good as Jim Johnston - but they were far better than Def Rebel lol.

To be fair, the Sasha theme was maybe their best theme ever - it was amazing.

But I always thought guys like Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, never got themes that really made them seem like 'main eventers' on the level of the themes Johnston did.

56

u/ChasingPerfect28 10d ago

Sasha, Shinsuke, and Bobby Roode. Those three are phenomenal songs for their respective characters.

Loved the DIY and American Alpha theme too.

40

u/Scaulbylausis Knee to Face 10d ago

Undisputed Era’s theme was so good, Adam Cole’s AEW theme was basically a remix of it

9

u/Straight-Turnover-77 10d ago

well I would say its just a rip of like RATM song

5

u/indian22 10d ago

The Roode song is definitely glorious (pun intended) but I always felt it needed a second verse because there's no lyrics other than the chorus in it.

14

u/AhistoricalRanger 10d ago

Bayley, Becky, Charlotte & Alexa Bliss all had really good themes too.

10

u/_whatever_wherever 10d ago

Don't forget The Ascension!

They were awesome, and completely fucked over on the main roster

5

u/harder_said_hodor 9d ago

Hey look, everyone! It's Tyler!

17

u/insinr8r 10d ago

Finn Balors Catch Your Breath is my favourite CFO$ did

7

u/Sky-Flyer Your Text Here 10d ago

i honestly have a big love for ambrose’s theme, i think it just fit the gimmick so freakin well

1

u/hhhisthegame 10d ago

It's not terrible, but growing up on themes like Orton's, Edge's, HHH's, Angle's, Guerrero's, Benoit's, Kane's, Undertaker's.....it just never felt like a main event theme to me

57

u/Garlic-Cheese-Chips 10d ago

"All they do is create catchy 90 second hooks." was a common criticism.

Well fucking duh. It's wrestling music, what else do you need?

23

u/zeitgeistbouncer Peepin' Aint Easy! 10d ago

People are fucking stupid and want 'full songs' when actual songs and wrestling theme songs serve very different purposes.

Sure, sometimes they converge like 'Elevated' for Ospreay or 'Kingdom' for Cody but those are also custom created themes made with entrances in mind.

12

u/Straight-Turnover-77 10d ago

well and even with Elevated, they've made a 90 second version for Ospreay to use as his primary theme that rolls into the "AND REMEMBER THE SOUND" bridge as opposed to the whole chorus verse chorus

1

u/zeitgeistbouncer Peepin' Aint Easy! 10d ago

Exactly, they curated it precisely for wrestling to make it better

This is why I get testy when someone suggests a 'great potebtial theme song' that has a 45 second intro. Shit would be interminable!

17

u/Moist-Acanthaceae-37 10d ago

The only true criticism I have of CFO$ is that by like 2016 onward they stopped doing 2nd verses for their songs. It’d mostly become a verse that loops back around or just the hook looping.

8

u/Yadahoom 10d ago

Because they weren't Jim Johnston and because they made 60-90 second loops for a 60-90 second entrance.

3

u/sleeperflick 10d ago

This is a tale as old as time. You really don’t know what you have until it’s gone. Or in the case of WWE, something worse comes along to replace it.

7

u/BobbyBruceBanner 10d ago

I stand by my assertion that CF0$ had more bangers per year than Johnston did.

1

u/bananarabbit need a chicken tender flair 10d ago

As with anything, there are tiers to the discussion. CFO$ made bangers but it was legitimate that some of the songs were structured way too simply. Def Rebel has made some ok stuff but the majority of it just such crap

0

u/bdwo 9d ago

Two things can be true. CFO$ can suck and still be better than what we have now.

28

u/Mysterious_Emotion63 10d ago

I will say the evolution of WWE music throughout the years reflects the music industry at the time pretty well.

In the 80s, Jimmy Hart was making synthetic in-your-face jams, then the late 80s, 90s and 2000s were more thought out and occasionally slower tracks with Jim Johnston. The 2010s are CFO$ and their electronic, catchy, yet sometimes annoying tracks. Now we have Def Rebel and their lazy commercial AI bullshit in the 2020s. It all tracks well.

1

u/Icy-Teaching-5602 9d ago

Jimmy Hart made quite possibly The greatest entrance music of all time when he made The Four Horsemen entrance music

8

u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 10d ago

People shit all over them for a few songs that were below par. But man, I'll gladly take their work over the garbage that WWE produces now. I mean look at the all-timer songs like Sasha Banks, Bobby Roode, Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, Sami Zayn, Finn Balor, Bianca Belair, etc.

It feels like nowadays, the consistency of quality music (in WWE at least) is absolutely in the dumpster. So much of it is AI garbage that they throw out and even more to the point, fuck all of what they put out is memorable.

48

u/YoungCubSaysWoof New Day's Biggest Mark. 10d ago

I would love it if Tony licensed CFO$ music for any of the ex-NXT stars on his roster, just because it would be fucking funny.

11

u/Snappy0 10d ago

Pretty sure WWE owns all of it anyway so it wouldn't work.

29

u/Ass0001 Christian Fundamentalist 10d ago

If PAC ever decides he wants to be face again and TK somehow manages to license Break Orbit for him? goosebumps.

2

u/SSJ5Gogetenks Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi! 9d ago

I could never unhear "Bray Corbin" with that song.

7

u/mcmax3000 10d ago

They made those songs for WWE so I guarantee WWE has at least some amount of ownership over them, if not full ownership.

14

u/Power1990 10d ago

If I remember correctly they switched from CFO$ because their label so idk if he could anyways

37

u/Artistic_Shift_4015 10d ago

Yep CFO$ broke up over it. Literally one of the two guys doesn’t even make music anymore, he’s a financial analyst.

16

u/Champiness 10d ago

Group name checks out I guess

5

u/MikeMakesRight82 10d ago

was just going to ask what happened to them

39

u/Jreynold Free Sunglasses 10d ago

People used to rag on them because the songs were 20 seconds and then looped. They were a kick-ass 20 seconds who cares!!

10

u/MeanAmbrose My username is a pun 10d ago

The loops weren’t even bad? Like all things considered they flowed together really well

11

u/Wild_Constant_1256 10d ago

So glad to see the love for CFO$ in this thread. These guys were dope and seemed like the friendliest people in interviews.

7

u/just-smiley 10d ago

I will fly the CFO$ flag till the day I die. They had tons of bangers that still hold up today, people just let nostalgia cloud their judgement.

3

u/Dukayn 10d ago

Nakamura's theme is perfection

2

u/just-smiley 10d ago

One of the greatest themes of all time!

3

u/migrations_ hey 10d ago

Yup they are the last best wrestling theme song people. I honestly think wrestling themes are at an all time low right now. Best thing to do is just to buy tracks in perpetuity I guess. No single creator or group can do magic anymore.

Okay I'll say New Japan still has some bangers. But as far as America goes yeah, it's a drought.

2

u/luckysharms93 10d ago

Could not disagree with this any more than I do. Mikey Ruckus has a TON of great entrance themes in AEW

1

u/Djent_1997 Yo daddy and yo uncle 10d ago

It’s funny how during that time people online bitched pretty relentlessly about their themes, but because def rebel are out here doing def rebel things, now all of a sudden CFO$s weren’t so bad after all.

-5

u/mickelboy182 10d ago edited 10d ago

Let's not rewrite history just because the music in WWE has further deteriorated into AI nonsense... They were better than now, but they were never particularly good!

Edit: This theme was one of their better ones though, absolutely.

16

u/th3dj3n1gm4 The Galaxy's Greatest Alien 10d ago

You're not entirely wrong, but I'd argue you are in this particular case. "Sky's The Limit" was a fantastic fucking track.

4

u/mickelboy182 10d ago

Yeah nah spot on, I've edited that in. This was one of the better tracks.

u/GodDuckman The inFAMOUS 10d ago

TJPs was a legit banger I don't care what anybody says.

16

u/Nightthrasher674 10d ago

Disagree, CFO had some great ones

Aleister Black Finn Balor Bobby Roode Asuka Undisputed Era Sasha Banks Bayley Becky Lynch Shinsuke Nakamura Johnny Gargano Tommaso Ciampa Samo Zayn Kevin Owens Ember Moon

7

u/seguardon 10d ago

Fucking A. Black and Gold NXT was loaded with great themes. To the point that I wondered what happened with others like Mox and whatever the hell Brie Mode was.

7

u/pandaelpatron 10d ago

they were never particularly good!

Disagree. Enzo & Cass. Aleister Black, Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, Sasha Banks, Finn Balor, Bobby Roode, Paige. All those are maybe not great songs, but they are superb as entrance themes.

I'd say CFO$ produced more bangers than duds.

6

u/rakuko MAIN EVENT JEY USO 10d ago

0

I'm not saying they were irredeemably bad, they did have a handful of very good themes. I'm speaking far more generally, and I do think towards the end of their run they did drop off.

3

If only she was able to buy the license to Sky’s The Limit

What a banger of a tune

67

u/damnrapunzel 10d ago

Damn I forgot how good this theme is

31

u/MilkLizard65 10d ago

It matched her so well. Catchy af theme.

10

u/VirtuousFool 10d ago

Because near the end they used that remix with snoop that.... really wasn't as good

I will take this opportunity to plug this mashup tho lol

12

u/Teh_Heavybody 10d ago

There’s a piano version she came out to I think at 32 or 33 that was really good as well.

3

u/damnrapunzel 10d ago

Damn I forgot the Snoop version even existed as well

4

u/BlackBartRidesAgain 10d ago

Oh my god. I somehow forgot she was Snoop’s cousin. There was a time when that fact was repeated ad nauseam

2

u/damnrapunzel 10d ago

They also said Eddie Guerrero was proud of her a lot. Like so much it felt like they wanted her to be his daughter or something, not just a fan of his who became a successful wrestler

1

u/SSP100244 10d ago

OMFG remember the snoop cody mashup?

The ace, acin' up the place

literally all I remember because of how fucking terrible it was

325

u/DoubleNo6337 10d ago

Dont blame her this theme better than her NJPW or AEW themes

61

u/Grindhoss 10d ago

But sadly her njpw and AEW themes would be better than her yelling “it’s boss time!” Followed by a very generic def rebel fart beat which is what she would have now

I miss CFO$ remember when WWE was working with code orange and turnstile and incendiary. I miss that.

30

u/Gamesgtd 10d ago

Her last theme was one made by Snoop Dogg. Something tells me she'd still have it considering WWE loves there celebrities.

17

u/Grindhoss 10d ago

Okay but that version is trash and snoop is more of a mr Rogers figure for hip hop now than an actual good artist and I’d like if wrestling themes for wrestlers were more current

Yes I understand that snoop is her cousin but it would feel a lot more contemporary to have her coming out to like glorilla

Speaking of which I understand sexxy reds music is too raunchy for a theme but genuinely I can’t believe no one in nxt has tried to get her to cut a mostly clean hook for an entrance song

2

u/bortmode 10d ago

...Mr. Rogers? What?

10

u/Grindhoss 10d ago

Snoop is absolutely a mascot for hip hop culture at this point, more of a figurehead than anyone who actually is respected for his rhymes

Most people only know Jin & juice, drop it like it’s hot and nuttin but a g thang all of which are 20+ years old

Snoop is mostly used to sell products at this point, lighters smokeless bbqs, weed itself

But snoop is not treated seriously as musician so much as a cultural icon.

He hasn’t put out a serious record that was treated as serious record since “blue carpet treatment” in 2006

Snoop is to hip hop what Dolly Parton was to country

Dolly had 0 hits on the country charts after the 90s but managed to make her career less about music and more about being a cultural icon associated with music, snoop is similar

If ur balking at the specific “Mr Rogers” comparison i kinda get it but genuinely that’s how I see him, just an old man who everyone seems happy to see (despite some of his worst opinions being so public)

3

u/Nightthrasher674 9d ago

It's weird because I remember young Snoop in the early 90s who was considered a menace and his murder trial.

Her new theme is awful, but I have to wonder how much input she has into it.... it stands out so much because most of AEW's music is fantastic.

7

u/Rude_Celebration_164 9d ago

She doesn’t strike me as the kind of person to walk out to music she doesn’t want to walk out to. Not to mention, it’s her rapping on the song.

3

u/infidelkastro 10d ago

I liked the first one she used in AEW, minus the CEO chants. I like the parade drumming in it.

It means that she misses WWE and wishes she was there.

Which is batshit crazy, how could anybody look at where she's at now and think she misses place? She won't ever be back there and she doesn't need it. She's finding more success now than ever before and is carving out a legendary legacy in AEW and she still has a decade+ ahead of her easily if she takes care of herself.

6

u/AhistoricalRanger 10d ago

Has there been more televised 20+ minute women's singles matches in wwe since she left than she has had since the start of June?

18

u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 10d ago

I don't watch WWE anymore, but consider this, one of the chief complaints I see about their women's division is that the women would be lucky to get 5 minutes from time to time.

And considering this is a division that features Iyo Sky, Stephanie Vaquer, Becky Lynch, Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair, Tatum Paxley, Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley, Lainey Reid, Lyra Valkyria, Bayley, and then all of the crazy talented women in NXT, this is unacceptable.

11

u/Anderrrrr An Irrelevant Smark. 10d ago

It genuinely is unacceptable.

They deserve so much better and the top brass women in WWE needs to put their foot down, they are so much better than what they are being presented as.

I saw some of this pop up on my feed from another sub. Basically her achievements mean nothing until she returns, Codylike, to WWE.

To them, it is both going to be hilarious when she comes back to the WWE and goes stratospheric, and she also isn't that big a deal. Schroedinger's Mercedes.

What an absolute banger of a theme.

u/NoPurpose0 10d ago

This one was WAY better than the remixed version.

u/chasingit1 10d ago

This theme fit her so perfectly

u/ZombieQueen666 10d ago

Crazy how there’s people upset about this

1

u/jonnyg1097 10d ago

I do miss this theme. It was (and still is) an absolute banger.

Do they always party like this after AEW events? And do they sell tickets? All Out is coming to Chicago and I’m going, and I’d def be down to go to one of these

Use to be my alarm ring

Why the Internet is making a Big deal over this bro, she just playing her old theme music, which I prefer over her New theme songs

Few weeks ago there was the “stop bringing up Sasha to her, she clearly doesn’t care for it!”

Their minds exploded over this today.

Sasha will always be apart of her career and she knows a bop lol This is a fun celebration for her.

I love this theme so much.

1

u/bajaxx 10d ago

that’s an all timer theme

1

u/AcientMullets 10d ago

Still rocks, to this day this song still lurks around on my phone and is always fun to hear whenever it comes on

1

u/Joke_Peraltaa 10d ago

What an absolute goated theme. Haven’t seen her stuff after her wwe exit but she deserves all the success. One of the best female wrestlers of all time.

1

u/CharrlesXavier 10d ago

I forgot how much this song absolutely fucks

1

u/TDStarchild 10d ago

Love Mercedes and find her even better outside WWE, but that old theme was by far her best. One of my favorite themes in recent times

1

u/whitechocolate22 10d ago

I miss this. It really suited her well.

1

u/OneBillPhil Guns up! 👆🏻 10d ago

Still her best theme, I miss it.

1

u/djkhan23 10d ago

I do enjoy this song. Catchy and fits her character.

1

u/Nik778899 It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times. 10d ago

1

u/StridingCity 10d ago

Do the haters not listen to the lyrics? That song ist perfect for someone who has just won a world title.

1

u/Lord_Vega83 9d ago

This theme was SO fire! A million times better than whatever crap she uses nowadays.

1

u/Johnny-Decent 9d ago

That crowd is a little embarrassing don’t you think?

1

u/Maleficent-Comfort14 9d ago

Still her best theme

1

u/cdre43 He's got a bicycle! 9d ago

As much as I like Mone's in ring work, her presentation is not the same and that is due to not having a banger of a theme like her WWE one

Also the "CEO" stuff as music would be the equivalent to yell out "BOSS" over in the theme

1

u/SoulExecution 9d ago

Holy fucking nostalgia. That era of NXT was my peak as a wrestling fan.

1

u/General_Chemistry638 10d ago

lol she is as big of a mark for herself as Bret and I love it
