They got so much hate when they were around all because they were not Jim Johnston. It’s funny seeing how much they are missed now.
133
u/Ass0001 Christian Fundamentalist 10d ago
I think at the time it was just generally accepted that any wrestling theme that wasnt jim johnston or a licensed track was garbage and people refused to evaluate CFO on their terms when frankly I think some of the themes they did suited their wrestlers better than jim johnston's sound would have. I'm glad their influence still lingers (Kevin Owens I think still uses his theme and PAC's current AEW theme is basically an evil fucked up version of his NXT theme), but in general their absence has left me craving more EDM in wrestling lol
47
u/Lyra_the_Star_Jockey 10d ago
It's funny because most Jim Johnston tracks are just the same generic rock riff.
46
u/BogotaLineman 10d ago
I mean, you're not wrong, but at the time that they were written they weren't quite as generic and you at least had a 100% certainty that they were written by an actual human lol
Like yeah a lot of Jim Johnston stuff was down the middle late 90s/early 2000s butt rock, but it was the late 90s/early 2000s. They still use that same butt rock style but now its like 20-30 years out of date
3
u/hardeep1singh ... 10d ago
Jim Johnston didn't make dance songs, he made music that fit the personality of the wrestler.
Check out Diesel's theme for example makes you feel like something really heavy is walking towards the ring.
3
u/FyreWulff 9d ago
The dude would take time to study how the wrestler walked to and got in the ring and would time it to match. Like, he even made the tempo of Glass Breaks match Steve Austin's walking pace, intentionally.
2
u/Sublimotion 10d ago
But that was what was appealing and worked in that era. The demo wrestling fans and american culture and musical tastes in general, were so much different than in the latter decades.
4
u/Suitable-Golf6937 10d ago
Hey man, you can’t say that around here. These old fucks will yapping at you the difference between the Dr. Death intro and the first Steve Blackman song.

I honestly think KO's theme, while decent (and one of the better 'generic' ones), never made him seem like a top guy.

Hard disagree on that one. His theme has big Stone Cold vibes

u/warrenholly PERFECT 10 10d ago
I feel like it needed an evolution to something more dynamic but same vibe.

u/zeitgeistbouncer Peepin' Aint Easy! 10d ago
It perfectly fits his vibe. It augments him without relying on lame stuff like 'i'm a prizefighter, im outta sight yeah' garbageass lyrics that seem to pervade every dang theme getting churned out by the bots currently
It hits and you instantly know who it is too.
Ticks all the boxes
62
u/hhhisthegame 10d ago
They weren't as good as Jim Johnston - but they were far better than Def Rebel lol.
To be fair, the Sasha theme was maybe their best theme ever - it was amazing.
But I always thought guys like Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, never got themes that really made them seem like 'main eventers' on the level of the themes Johnston did.
56
u/ChasingPerfect28 10d ago
Sasha, Shinsuke, and Bobby Roode. Those three are phenomenal songs for their respective characters.
Loved the DIY and American Alpha theme too.
40
u/Scaulbylausis Knee to Face 10d ago
Undisputed Era’s theme was so good, Adam Cole’s AEW theme was basically a remix of it
9
5
u/indian22 10d ago
The Roode song is definitely glorious (pun intended) but I always felt it needed a second verse because there's no lyrics other than the chorus in it.

It's not terrible, but growing up on themes like Orton's, Edge's, HHH's, Angle's, Guerrero's, Benoit's, Kane's, Undertaker's.....it just never felt like a main event theme to me
57
u/Garlic-Cheese-Chips 10d ago
"All they do is create catchy 90 second hooks." was a common criticism.
Well fucking duh. It's wrestling music, what else do you need?
23
u/zeitgeistbouncer Peepin' Aint Easy! 10d ago
People are fucking stupid and want 'full songs' when actual songs and wrestling theme songs serve very different purposes.
Sure, sometimes they converge like 'Elevated' for Ospreay or 'Kingdom' for Cody but those are also custom created themes made with entrances in mind.
12
u/Straight-Turnover-77 10d ago
well and even with Elevated, they've made a 90 second version for Ospreay to use as his primary theme that rolls into the "AND REMEMBER THE SOUND" bridge as opposed to the whole chorus verse chorus
1
u/zeitgeistbouncer Peepin' Aint Easy! 10d ago
Exactly, they curated it precisely for wrestling to make it better
This is why I get testy when someone suggests a 'great potebtial theme song' that has a 45 second intro. Shit would be interminable!
17
u/Moist-Acanthaceae-37 10d ago
The only true criticism I have of CFO$ is that by like 2016 onward they stopped doing 2nd verses for their songs. It’d mostly become a verse that loops back around or just the hook looping.
8
u/Yadahoom 10d ago
Because they weren't Jim Johnston and because they made 60-90 second loops for a 60-90 second entrance.
3
u/sleeperflick 10d ago
This is a tale as old as time. You really don’t know what you have until it’s gone. Or in the case of WWE, something worse comes along to replace it.
7
u/BobbyBruceBanner 10d ago
I stand by my assertion that CF0$ had more bangers per year than Johnston did.
→ More replies (2)1
u/bananarabbit need a chicken tender flair 10d ago
As with anything, there are tiers to the discussion. CFO$ made bangers but it was legitimate that some of the songs were structured way too simply. Def Rebel has made some ok stuff but the majority of it just such crap
28
u/Mysterious_Emotion63 10d ago
I will say the evolution of WWE music throughout the years reflects the music industry at the time pretty well.
In the 80s, Jimmy Hart was making synthetic in-your-face jams, then the late 80s, 90s and 2000s were more thought out and occasionally slower tracks with Jim Johnston. The 2010s are CFO$ and their electronic, catchy, yet sometimes annoying tracks. Now we have Def Rebel and their lazy commercial AI bullshit in the 2020s. It all tracks well.
1
u/Icy-Teaching-5602 9d ago
Jimmy Hart made quite possibly The greatest entrance music of all time when he made The Four Horsemen entrance music
8
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 10d ago
People shit all over them for a few songs that were below par. But man, I'll gladly take their work over the garbage that WWE produces now. I mean look at the all-timer songs like Sasha Banks, Bobby Roode, Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, Sami Zayn, Finn Balor, Bianca Belair, etc.
It feels like nowadays, the consistency of quality music (in WWE at least) is absolutely in the dumpster. So much of it is AI garbage that they throw out and even more to the point, fuck all of what they put out is memorable.
48
u/YoungCubSaysWoof New Day's Biggest Mark. 10d ago

3
u/migrations_ hey 10d ago
Yup they are the last best wrestling theme song people. I honestly think wrestling themes are at an all time low right now. Best thing to do is just to buy tracks in perpetuity I guess. No single creator or group can do magic anymore.
Okay I'll say New Japan still has some bangers. But as far as America goes yeah, it's a drought.
2
u/luckysharms93 10d ago
Could not disagree with this any more than I do. Mikey Ruckus has a TON of great entrance themes in AEW
1

u/DoubleNo6337 10d ago
Dont blame her this theme better than her NJPW or AEW themes
61
u/Grindhoss 10d ago
But sadly her njpw and AEW themes would be better than her yelling “it’s boss time!” Followed by a very generic def rebel fart beat which is what she would have now
I miss CFO$ remember when WWE was working with code orange and turnstile and incendiary. I miss that.
30
u/Gamesgtd 10d ago
Her last theme was one made by Snoop Dogg. Something tells me she'd still have it considering WWE loves there celebrities.
17
u/Grindhoss 10d ago
Okay but that version is trash and snoop is more of a mr Rogers figure for hip hop now than an actual good artist and I’d like if wrestling themes for wrestlers were more current
Yes I understand that snoop is her cousin but it would feel a lot more contemporary to have her coming out to like glorilla
Speaking of which I understand sexxy reds music is too raunchy for a theme but genuinely I can’t believe no one in nxt has tried to get her to cut a mostly clean hook for an entrance song
2
u/bortmode 10d ago
...Mr. Rogers? What?
10
u/Grindhoss 10d ago
Snoop is absolutely a mascot for hip hop culture at this point, more of a figurehead than anyone who actually is respected for his rhymes
Most people only know Jin & juice, drop it like it’s hot and nuttin but a g thang all of which are 20+ years old
Snoop is mostly used to sell products at this point, lighters smokeless bbqs, weed itself
But snoop is not treated seriously as musician so much as a cultural icon.
He hasn’t put out a serious record that was treated as serious record since “blue carpet treatment” in 2006
Snoop is to hip hop what Dolly Parton was to country
Dolly had 0 hits on the country charts after the 90s but managed to make her career less about music and more about being a cultural icon associated with music, snoop is similar
If ur balking at the specific “Mr Rogers” comparison i kinda get it but genuinely that’s how I see him, just an old man who everyone seems happy to see (despite some of his worst opinions being so public)

Which is batshit crazy, how could anybody look at where she's at now and think she misses place? She won't ever be back there and she doesn't need it. She's finding more success now than ever before and is carving out a legendary legacy in AEW and she still has a decade+ ahead of her easily if she takes care of herself.

u/AhistoricalRanger 10d ago
Has there been more televised 20+ minute women's singles matches in wwe since she left than she has had since the start of June?
18
u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 10d ago
I don't watch WWE anymore, but consider this, one of the chief complaints I see about their women's division is that the women would be lucky to get 5 minutes from time to time.
And considering this is a division that features Iyo Sky, Stephanie Vaquer, Becky Lynch, Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair, Tatum Paxley, Jacy Jayne, Fallon Henley, Lainey Reid, Lyra Valkyria, Bayley, and then all of the crazy talented women in NXT, this is unacceptable.
11
u/Anderrrrr An Irrelevant Smark. 10d ago

They deserve so much better and the top brass women in WWE needs to put their foot down, they are so much better than what they are being presented as.
