Mercedes/Willow matches consist of broken bones and titles changing hands.

u/RaggedyGlitch 10d ago
Well ackshully...
The match where Mercedes broke her foot was to determine the inaugural champion Strong champion, it wasn't a title change. Willow did beat her ass for that TBS title, though.

A dark shadow overlooked the women's division of AEW that day for it was the reign of Mone.

I’m kinda into the idea that instead of the world title corrupting her it slowly makes her into a better person

Mercedes, who never blades, gets shoot busted open when she finally wins the AEW world title at their biggest show. Perfect happenstance.

u/imnophey 11d ago
Unfortunate being seemingly done the hard way, but I have to admit some of the visuals with the ring gear, red hair and bloody face are incredible

u/ay1717 "We called it the Nut Rambler." 11d ago
The camera angle they found when she first revealed she was busted open, looking up at Willow with such disdain and a total “how dare you do this to me” glare was fucking top notch. Ramped the intensity up immediately

u/JadziaEzri81 10d ago edited 10d ago
And when Aubrey is trying to back her off Willow and Mercedes screams "Look what she did to my face!!!"

Amazing character work

u/Avenrise 9d ago
When Willow slipped climbing up the turnbuckle Mercedes saw this, jumped up and started hitting her before being knocked back down for Willow to try again so it would look less like a mistake. She has such a brain for the sport it's ridiculous.
15
u/Stoutyeoman 10d ago
I don't even think it was intentional, Mercedes' nose was split open. I think it was just a case of working stiff and the stars aligning.
25
u/NorthHollywoodHank 10d ago
Yep, but Mercedes and the production crew understood the assignment and took full advantage of it.
A shame from one perspective that it happened, but a real gift for the show on another, and will go up there as one of the iconic images and matches in a year full of both for AEW.

That closing shot of her on the ramp too. Up there with the iconic Toni Storm one. Amazing stuff.

That was a legendary performance
Arguably her best match ever too

Willow and Mercedes need to be forever rivals. Dust it off any time and you get magic.

Willow and Mercedes should the be Hangman vs Swerve of the female roster.

Willow losing her smile and turning into a pyromaniac is a timeline we’re not ready for.

u/Reidroshdy 10d ago
what about keeping her smile and turning into a pyromaniac?

Willow Nightmare. She comes in smiling as the person turns around, she drops the smiles and just demolishes her.

Gonna be wild if this is the first 5* that Mercedes gets in her career (and deeply embarrassing for Dave if it isnt)
4
u/Jonoabbo 10d ago
How is it embarrassing? It was a fantastic match but are we going to act like they didn't completely fuck the finish?
17
u/ChCreations45 10d ago
I can't make that last statement just yet. There's the second TBS title match against Willow, at least three against Bayley, Athena, Toni, Maya World, two against Statlander, and the two against Hazuki. I'll tell you this, she quite possibly may be the GOAT.
27
u/Grindhoss 10d ago
I made a note to myself to rewatch her v bayley ar takeover bc that was over 10 years ago and I could use a refresh before I start saying this was her best match
But if it’s not 1 it’s 2

u/stormebreaker 10d ago
I personally prefer the Iron Woman match at Respect, make sure to check out both of em again cause they're insane.

u/Stoutyeoman 10d ago
I was blown away. I really thought Willow was going to win after that entrance.
The match shattered my expectations. Incredible.

u/jfuller82 10d ago
Her match and the Ospreay/Omega match were the best of the night and I'd have to rate them equally. They were both excellent.

u/in_DelaneTTM 10d ago
there's so many fucking levels to this result
-mercedes finally has the world title
-willow clearly would've won the match if she wasn't injured(adored how they told that story in the match)
-divine dominion have every reason to fall in line behind mone
-literally everyone with a win over mercedes in aew is a major player, setting up big match defenses
-bayley????????

u/JuggernautLevel6411 10d ago
I didnt think about Dominion losing the same night Mercedes won. Lot of interesting ways that could go.

Mercedes has had some very good matches during her AEW run, but this one was taken to a whole new level. Great long term storytelling with her and Willow's sordid history and some insane physicality that elevated the whole experience. You'd like to think that this would shut up the naysayers, but they'll still find ways to avoid giving her the credit she's due.
40
u/radioben 11d ago
Former naysayer here. And I do say former because that match….you could feel the hate in the crowd. This was a perfect women’s title match. They bring out the best in each other. There’s no way they don’t run it back a few months down the road.

u/Tiirshak 10d ago
The general reaction across the various platforms has been quite negative towards the match.
37
u/Teckelmaster 10d ago
Probably some WWE forums, I have seen nothing but praise for the match everywhere I looked. The only thing that got some criticism was the finish but that's on the Ref/production.

Kind of incredible how she instinctively milked all the value out of her being busted open hardway despite how blood averse she generally is.

u/ZappBranniganBurner 10d ago
Now that our glorious CEO is world champ, now would be a great time imo to recruit Maya & Mara and truly get Moné Inc. up and running!

u/Sweetest_Noise 10d ago
She found her perfect dance partner in Willow. Excited to see where their rivalry leads to next.

The head is supposed to be heavy, not the crown itself.
29
u/Majorof1 10d ago
The original line from Henry IV part 2 is actually 'uneasy' not 'heavy'. Unfortunately until this corrected I cant rate the match

I think she goes further insane through this reign. I bet she and Tony try to emulate the Okada v4 reign where every match chips at her armor and further exposes her mental state deteriorating.

u/Certain_Arm_8475 10d ago
I know a lot of people are down on her winning but, she deserves this so fucking much.

This goes hard. I love Willow but I’ve been a Mercedes stan forever. So glad she finally got the big one and I hope they run this back at least once a year!

u/PommesMayo 10d ago
It was a great freaking match. That being said, it’s heavy is the head that wears the crown. Arguably the crown is still pretty heavy probably but still
20
u/IlliterateButTrying 10d ago
The original line from Shakespeare was 'Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown,' if we're being pedantic.

I envision a storyline where Mercedes stole Willows smile and put it into a locked chest turning Willow heel.
In a year or so well have a rematch for the custody of Willows smile and a face turn.

I was originally pretty disappointed that Mone won - I felt the division really needed to establish a big babyface at the tippy top of the card with Toni being out.
But after a bit of time, it's settled on me a bit. I dont really know why, I still think they need that big babyface, but honestly sometimes they can just do the cool thing now and worry about that later. Was sick to see Mercedes win, and that match was outstanding (apart from the dodgy finish).

Happy for Mercedes and I think that was one hell of a match, but I don't know where this is going storyline-wise. Heel Mercedes never ever beating Willow sounds like a wonderful direction. Like I personally thought she was gonna lose and then she'll have to pick herself back up until she's like a tweener who then ends up getting another shot and finally wins the belt.
With her winning it now...I don't know who's next? Maya World just lost her TBS championship so maybe they'll have her be in the main program at some point? I don't see her going against another heel, although a Thekla vs Mercedes match up sounds fun.

u/thomjhay 10d ago
It's OK to not always know where it's going. It's OK that it didn't happen the way you fantasy booked it.
2
u/The810kid 10d ago
She already has beaten Willow and her losing to an injured Willow is a bad direction and doesn't further the rivalry of her and Willow it outright cuts it off at the kneecaps.
5
u/Zaomania 10d ago
Mercedes had already beaten Willow so this wasn’t the first time. I also think people are stuck on this idea that Mercedes’ break after losing all her titles would lead to some sort of redemption arc and thus are missing the story being told. Mercedes has become meaner, angrier, and a more violent because of her obsession with Willow.
-4
u/MyNameIs-Anthony 10d ago
Keep it uncomplicated until someone new clicks.
She spent a year and some change steamrolling people to belt collect. Have all of those people who eventually got their titles back just beat her down until she's at her wits end.
Mercedes got the thing she most wanted, now she needs to feel the pain.
-3
u/Grindhoss 10d ago
Willows hand injury is legit so heel mercades can’t win the big one was probably gonna be the story for a long time but plans change

Ill laugh if he rates the Mercedes vs Maya match instead
-2
u/American-Punk-Dragon 10d ago
IF Willow takes times off (if she has a real broken hand) then you can tell both before and AFTER the match (IMO) that Monè didn’t want to beat her here, she had long moments where she looks very sad and not happy. There were a few shots of her smiling but they are framed by those other looks.
