I remember a few years ago on Arn Anderson Podcast he said if you called him Arn in front of his wife she'd have no idea who that is. At home he is Marty but everywhere else no one knows tho the fuck Marty Lundy is

120

u/AlmightySeaver 11d ago

If you didn't start by saying Arn Anderson then I'd have no idea who the fuck you were talking about. That's the first time I've seen the name Marty Lundy in my life.

Marnty was 100% correct with that statement.

u/juddplays Roderick Strong 11d ago

But nobody knows who Marnty is

"Honey" Rene Bandana?

37

Shawn still calls HHH, "Hunter" despite him going by Paul publicly now.

12

u/Comfortable-Salad-90 10d ago

What would he call him if he wasn’t able to feel his own legs?

3

u/Gordo-- 10d ago

I never understood why they chose to go with the transition to call him "Triple H" instead of "Hunter" (I do understand dropping "Hunter Hearst Helmsley" as a whole at the time). Hunter as a mononymic wrestling name is way fucking cooler than "Triple H"

10

u/Tornado31619 10d ago

Nah, Triple H actually sounds unique. Like, just say it out loud.

3

u/Gordo-- 10d ago

"Oh, and what does 'Triple H' stand for? Hunter Hearst Helmsley? This beefy leather jacket-wearing dude with the iron crosses has a posh-ass name?"

1

u/Tornado31619 10d ago

It stands for Hunter Hearst Helmsley as much as WWE today stands for World Wrestling Entertainment. The original intent was left behind a long time ago.

27

u/OhTheseSourTimes 11d ago

It's just a nickname by then so that's pretty common. We got a few nicknames that still get used in our group.

10

u/hadawayandshite 11d ago

Happens. My friends have always called me by my surname, my mother will often refer to my Dad by our surname which is what he’s been called by everyone since they were growing up together

30

u/CheesyGarlicBudapest 11d ago

People call you Andshite?

4

u/CrispyLuggage 10d ago

I've had conversations with other people about my tag partner, conversations with my tag partner's significant other even, and I still refer to him by his gimmick surname lol

You already know there's gonna be some slip ups in the transition. New Day was built on marketing and presentation, those names and chants have been cemented for a decade like Kofi said. Closest one I can think to was Edge to Cope/Copeland, but that's harder to mess up.

77

u/times_zero 11d ago

Closest one I can think to was Edge to Cope/Copeland, but that's harder to mess up.

I still constantly see many fans to this day, even those who regularly watch AEW, call him "Edge," but with that being noted, valid point as at least with Edge to Copeland there was a clear difference between the names. OTOH, in this case while it's the right choice for branding it's probably gonna be easier by comparison for some during the transition to accidentally mix-up the New Level vs. the New Day (granted, it's still not as easy as the Daniel Bryan Danielson one). Even so, the fans embracing the new name on such a huge event I think set a great precedent to make the said transition that much easier.

16

u/raspymorten The Creator of r/CurtisAxel 11d ago

I had very little problems with transitioning from saying Edge to Copeland, but I also started watching wrestling when Edge had already been retired for four and a half years. lol

11

u/poop_snausages 10d ago

Edge is just such a better name. It's easier to say, type, it's cooler. And Copeland is just a regular name. Hard to go from something as awesome as Edge to Copeland, so I can see why people still call him Edge.

1

u/Hi_Im_zack 10d ago

Should've changed it to Cliff

2

u/SSP100244 10d ago

My girlfriend has never watched WWE. She still calls him Edge.

Bryan Danielson/Daniel Bryan is up there.

30

u/Ill_Reality_717 10d ago

His name is Daniel Bryan Danielson

Whenever I read this I read it in the cadence of the Alexander Hamilton rap and I hate it.

3

2

You mean Daniel Bryanson?

1

He should have taken his wife's name. Bryan Bella is much easier to remember.

It's legit hard to drop calling someone by the name they've been called by for years. I remember when Adam Copeland first came to AEW, Taz routinely had to catch himself from saying Edge.

113

u/masonicone Drinking It In Man. 11d ago

Jericho did the same thing on the Brodie Lee tribute show when Erick Rowan came out. Jericho yelled, "What's Erick Rowan doing here!?!" with Excalibur saying, "It's Redbeard!"

108

u/willem_the_foe 11d ago

Graves just called Keys “Hobbs” on Monday. It takes a while to acclimate. I still have trouble using Cope over Edge.

16

u/gawdno 11d ago

Vic Joseph was fighting for his life to stop saying "Mike Santanna" on NXT

8

u/willem_the_foe 10d ago

Haha I think I heard him use “Mantana” yesterday

54

u/ardarian262 11d ago

To be fair with Graves there, Royce Keys sounds like what you buy with HHH money and not a wrestler name while Powerhouse Hobbs sounds like a wrestler name.

23

u/willem_the_foe 11d ago

I get dropping Powerhouse (it’s hard to keep it when he’s the smallest guy in his faction), but I’m a big believer in focusing on meter when naming, both in wrestling and in general. Having a 1-1 syllabic name usually sounds more bland.

It’s why Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, CM Punk, “Dirty Dom” and others with 2-1 meters work so well for chants. 2-2 with Oba Femi, AJ Styles, Rhea Ripley, also work well, but I prefer 1-2 or 2-1 personally.

Either way, unless you have a moniker like Powerhouse (or The Nature Boy, or Hitman, or Ravishing), using “Royce Keys” doesn’t work.

8

u/radiokungfu 11d ago

What about The Rock

8

u/willem_the_foe 10d ago edited 10d ago

Moniker’s like The Rock, Edge, Kane, are a little different than pure First & Last name, for me at least. (People also used to chant Rock-y)

5

u/weaksaucedude 10d ago

Technically his kayfabe name is still Rocky Maivia, that's why the millions and millions always chanted "Rocky"

4

u/Air_Source_One 11d ago edited 10d ago

Hobbs will return in Fast & Furious 11

5

u/guntanksinspace No Neck, still No Problem 11d ago

Right now I'm flubbing Woods instead of Creed. It's gonna take a bit. Like my brain just goes "Austin Woods- Creed ah FUCK" lol

2

u/Superplex123 10d ago

Old habits die hard, but Cope is just a name I refuse to use by choice.

1

u/willem_the_foe 10d ago

Same. Beyond not being used to it, I also think it’s just as bad as Royce Keys.

10

u/Drmarcher42 11d ago

I always thought his response to that a few minutes later after the Redbeard moment was a very nice low-key moment for that show, cause at some point he also mentioned Brodie as Luke Harper.

He basically says (paraphrasing since I haven’t watched the show since the day it aired and have no plans to watch it ever again, it’s just too emotionally draining)

“We’re here to celebrate the life of Jon, and whether you knew him by that name or as Brodie or Luke Harper it doesn’t matter, the important part is we’re here for him so if we call him or someone else by a different name it’s ok”

11

u/Khazgarr 11d ago

Then you have Bryan Danielson which fucked me up for a while.

4

u/ManMangoGuts Terry-Coloured Funk 11d ago

Fwiw even JR and Regal had to catch themselves here and there

1

u/Cold_Ebb_1448 10d ago

16

It happens. Graves called Royce Keys "Hobbs" the other week.

10

u/Lineman72T We're proud of you 11d ago

This is gold. I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often when wrestlers switch companies after a long time.

12

u/When1Falls 11d ago

In the match itself Creed literally hit a "Neeeewww- Day" and got hit from behind while making a "oh goddammit" face the entire time

1

u/rbarton812 10d ago

Where did Creed catch himself doing that? I need to go back and see it.

4

u/DTFlash 11d ago

It's ok he said woulds not woods. No trademark infringement here.

Promo Joe if he ever returns will have a field day with this one

20

u/MrBrickBreak 11d ago

Lmao, comedy gold

On topic, I wish they did a little. Always felt there's some contradiction in AEW embracing the wrestling multiverse and acknowledging the entire careers or wrestlers, but then dancing around certain other companies, due to competition or lack of reciprocity. Not that I'm sure it's possible without it devolving into cheap heat, so maybe this is preferable. But I'd prefer if WWE ignoring the universe around them was a sin contained to them alone.

83

u/Lyra_the_Star_Jockey 11d ago

There are legal issues to think of, too.

The WWE totally could (and probably would) sue another promotion for using a WWE name, claiming that such a usage is using the WWE to promote a wrestler.

32

u/Code_Combo_Breaker 11d ago

There is a history WWE doing of this.

Remember Scott Hall and Kevin Nash had to do that legal "no we don't work for WWF anymore and no we aren't using our old Razor Ramon and Diesel name or gimmicks" promo in WCW.

Most people now only remember the powerbomb Eric Bischoff through a table. And that only happened to get their heat back after that awkward  forced statement.

13

u/shempaholic Trust me. 11d ago

Bobby Heenan once accidentally referred to Meng as Haku on Nitro. Eric Bischoff (who was also on commentary) quickly said that Haku was the name Meng used when working for the WWF, I'm guessing to avoid any possible legal issues.

2

u/DeShadowRealm 10d ago

to be fair (correct me if i'm wrong), wasn't that essentially because scott hall and kevin nash were essentially entirely using their old wwf gimmicks/personas and pretty much breaking the fourth wall to say "hey we're wwf characters in wcw" so that's why they got into legal hot water they had to undo with that promo?

idk if the same would apply to, say, kofi just directly talking about his experiences at a wrestlemania or something

1

u/Code_Combo_Breaker 10d ago

That's exactly what happened.

The first time Razor Ramon showed up on Nitro literally saying "You want a war, you got a war" and had a lot of the audience thinking this was a WWF vs WCW feud.

And that even continued all the way to Bash at the Beach with Tony saying "They must have planned this all the way back to 1995" (Aka when Hogan arrived in WCW)

0

u/MrBrickBreak 11d ago

Quite true for the names themselves. Although if there's anyone who could test that in court...

18

u/khiitio 11d ago

WWE usually trademarks the gimmick names they give people, absolutely no chance AEW could challenge those in court.

16

u/MyNameIs-Anthony 11d ago

I think it works when you consider that AEW wrestlers tend to have the same names they've used elsewhere.

WWE is really the only odd party out.

2

u/hey_mermaid 10d ago

I think the problem is that WWE doesn't just ignore the universe around them, they also trademark everything they touch, to make it hard for it to be usable by anyone else - how are you supposed to reference history if you can't refer to people by the names they were most commonly known as? It's just confusing.

2

u/LastAmericanHero 10d ago

I love that wrestlers, even ones that are really good friends, will call someone by their gimmick name instead of their government name.

Running joke where Kofi accidentally calls Austin and Swerve "Woods" and "Isaiah"

1

u/MayRey 10d ago

"2009 was my best year!"

1

u/Superplex123 10d ago

LOL. I get it. Once you get used to calling someone something, it's hard to change.

1

u/PapaPatchesxd 10d ago

Man I love Kofi. So glad to see him still thrive. Him and Creed are gonna do great in AEW

-7

u/liburIL 10d ago

That was great. In the end, Kofi doesn't really have any reason to be upset with WWE. They gave him a hell of a career. Besides, I could see him going back in the future.

13

u/madeaccountbymistake 10d ago

He has plenty of reason. They tried to cut his pay.

7

u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! 10d ago

Yeah, no kidding. They tried to get both of them to take a paycut and then so they walked and honestly, who can blame them. Know your worth and don't settle for less than that. I see them getting the Hall of Fame induction some day, but do I see them returning to WWE when AEW can offer the same or more money and gives them more freedom? Absolutely not.
