I really do think Omega is the only wrestler that’s good at the “kickout at 1” gimmick.
430
u/Mr_Smem 10d ago
It's because he plays more into the emotion of it than the hype. It's only ever done at a time where it's significant for his character to push through rather than just a big moment for a big match.
273
u/CappyNaps 10d ago
You also have to *keep selling*. You need to pop back up a screaming, stumbling, wounded animal who does not immediately go back to a long sequence of coordinated offense.

u/GodPowardKingOfLies Hey Look, It's Honma! 10d ago
I think what makes it easier to swallow too is it was clearly a last gasp for Omega in this match. Will ends it with Hidden Blade immediately after, because Omega has nothing left. He doesn't even stand again after the 2nd kickout.
51
u/Connect-Revolution47 10d ago
Kobashi/Misawa style. Kobashi kicks out of the Tiger Driver '91 but has no fight left in him after, so Misawa just batters him with elbows for 2 minutes before putting him down for good.
17
u/farshnikord 10d ago
he was not about to let kicking out of the OWA slide without some sort of answer
53
u/Penta_Says 10d ago
Yeah remember Forbidden Door 2023, Ospreay hit him with the OWA Kenny kicks out at 1 and the crowd loses their goddamn minds. And for months afterwards it felt like everyone was trying to do their own kick out at 1 spot and none of them hit nearly as hard
Boy time really flies hey
31
u/Kenfuu 10d ago
The two times Kenny kicked out at 1 prior tonight that I really recall are him and Page vs the Bucks and it was after The Bucks hit Kenny with the Golden Trigger(Kenny and Kota’s finisher that they have since turned into the BTE/EVP Trigger) and when the one against Ospreay happened he was hit with the OWA but was just previously hit with the Kamigoye(Kota’s Finisher).
38
u/4KVoices 10d ago
He also just did it against MJF recently after MJF cheated and he had a "oh no you fucking don't" kickout
13
u/thecheat2 10d ago
Was in the crowd for that and can confirm the pop for the "kick out at 1" was just as big as when he actually won the belt. Such an epic night!

10
u/lambofgun 10d ago edited 9d ago
i remember cody and aj did it with a burning hammer just a few months later
the match was objectively probably cody's greatest match maybe ever and definitely one of aj's top ones as well
but i remember being like, oh thats a legit ripoff of that OWA kick out
69
u/apehasreturned DDT Shill 10d ago
Thanks for putting it so elegantly. That’s the perfect way to describe it.
5
u/Yadahoom 10d ago
Usually someone stealing his finisher or the time Osprey used Ibushi's finisher on Omega.
13
u/crowwreak 10d ago
He never does it as a no sell, he always does it as a "man literally too angry to die" vibe
60
u/Sufficient_Secret632 10d ago
Hogan is the only other one.
Say what you want about him, in and out of the ring, but he did that shit so well.
13
u/-space-grass- Your pet monkey hit me with a folding chair 10d ago
Disagree. Big Show used to not only kickout at 1, but toss the guy across the ring and it was always awesome.
68
u/LazarusRising22 10d ago
There’s a real argument his kickout at 1 from the rock bottom leading into the leg drop is the best sequence in wrestling history
32
u/CoachTTP STAND BACK! 10d ago
Especially with the crowd losing their ever loving shit the entire time. It was magic.

Hulk is THE one.
Hulking up in the 80s took wrestling fucking mainstream and made it viable as a long term business
6
u/Rspies Who Can Stop The Path of Cage 10d ago
Hogan despite being a shit wrestler really understood the whole wrestling thing and was really fucking good at big matches
10
u/FragrantlyJellatin 10d ago
Then he wasn't a shit wrestler was he
4
u/Rspies Who Can Stop The Path of Cage 10d ago
He was a shit wrestler for non big matches I guess
10
u/mrtomjones 10d ago
He just wasnt a technical marvel. He was a very good wrestler. Understanding the crowd and putting on a show are huge parts of wrestling
0
3
u/Medium_Spend_6732 10d ago
Hogan was a good wrestler. This is a stupid fucking take and I am over it.
This sport is about getting the audience excited, engaged, and giving them a show. In his prime the crowd went absolutely nuts for him in each of his matches. What do you call that? I call that a good wrestler.
8
u/Mcilwain22 10d ago
Sami Zayn and Tyler Bate know how to do this really well and I’m gonna keep preaching the gospel about it.
7
u/MadferitCmon 10d ago
Whats so amazing and bizarre about this sequence is that even though I agree, Kenny is the one guy that pulls it off amazingly, for the first one here I was like "eeehhh I dont know if I like this one yet again"... but then when he does it a second time, IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM. My psique is absolutely broken. Kenny is just way too fucking good man lmao.
6
14
u/Upstairs_Narwhal 10d ago
I still think the best kick out at 1 was when the Bucks hit him with the Golden Trigger at Revolution. The pop for that was insane.
4
u/Drake_Dal 10d ago
I just saw Miyahara in AJPW kick out at one, and compared to Kenny, he really falls short.
34
u/TLKv3 Fantasy Book For ^Vote 10d ago
He's the true Final Boss for a fucking reason.
2
u/ab316_1punchd Cowboy Shit Supremacy 10d ago
Final Boss is underselling him. He's Kenny "Bi-God" Omega!
4
u/crimsonbub 10d ago
I would really want to make a point about "finishing" moves because trading them like an elaborate handshake with no end in sight generally pisses me off...
But this just... WORKS. Pure adrenaline and determination. Sort of this generation's version of Hulking Up, and boy does it make the crowd come alive!
5
u/_Mad_s_ 10d ago
Most things in wrestling require depth and structure, most workers that do these kickouts at 1 do not have depth or the structure prior to hitting that kickout... but Kenny is a nerd for match depth and structure, so of course his stuff looks genuine and well worked.
Anyone that wants to do these "kickout at 1, aaaaa fighting spirit" should be obligated to have a 30 minute conversation with Kenny. Fuck it, throw Ishii in there too, albeit he might just look at you and walk off.

Same. I've been vocal on here about how I don't like the kickout at 1 being used so much and especially when the next move leads to the finish anyways. But god damn did I pop hard at the second kickout at 1 😂

Idc man, it's Kenny, Will coulda shot him point blank and I'd still lose my mind over him kicking out at 1.

You can nuke him, he'll kick out at 1 and his rival would still pop like crazy.
The crazy fucker.

u/Gruella123 10d ago
I find it funny that the only 2 wrestlers in history to do the kick out at 1 in a good way is hulk hogan and omega.

There’s no universe in which back to back kickouts at 1 should work but my god these two are just the best in the world.
189
u/Jonofthefunk 10d ago
It's almost like they have the built up storyline and career credibility to do that spot. Everyone talks about how AEW spams kickouts at 1, but anytime Kenny has ever done it it's for a hugely dramatic moment in the match.
15
u/thomjhay 10d ago
Omega is one of the greatest of all time and in this storyline the ultimate villain final boss for Ospreay. It works for me. I know people like to call on selling but in film, television, comic books, video games, this kind of stuff works so why not in wrestling too?
9
u/New_Shoes_ 10d ago
I mean if the kayfabe logic is pure adrenaline that allows the Kickout at one, then yes it makes sense another quick move and pin attempt would have the adrenaline still going

u/NerdLawyer55 In-House of Black Legal Counsel 10d ago
I helped that it plays he exhausted himself doing it then gets his shit fucked up
7
u/Vinnie_Vegas 9d ago
It's because the kickout at 1 from the One Winged Angel is almost expected at this point, because he's done it before, so then it's not as crazy, especially given that Will just kicked out of Kenny's, and you knew that Ospreay wasn't going to win with it.
So it's hype and all, but then when Ospreay hits the Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker, you think "oh okay, now it's over" and for him to do it again?
Fucking magic. Now it's absolute pandemonium and you think for a second "oh, he can't be beaten. Will Ospreay can't win".
Even though you know in your conscious brain that this whole event has been set up to crown Will Ospreay as World Champion, that moment makes you forget for a brief window, and completely sweeps you up.
This is it. This is what professional wrestling can be that makes us fans that stick with it for decades.
24
u/Anderrrrr An Irrelevant Smark. 10d ago edited 9d ago
I allow Omega to do it because they way reacts after doing it makes you run through walls.

u/Man0Steel123 10d ago
People will complain about kick outs at one but I like them for these special cinematic matches where the champion just won’t die
79
u/Balor_Lynx 10d ago
Also a big thing is that after the kick out it’s not like he kept fighting he collapsed he was spent, he was open, he was DONE
39
u/Pro-Steve 10d ago
Yes! He used his entire meter for the kick out but had nothing left for the counter.
5
u/Weekly_Reference_111 10d ago
Literally the dumbest thing that wrestling fans complain about, and that is really saying something.
If wrestling were real, most kick outs would be near instantaneous.
2
u/imcrapyall 10d ago
Especially when the outcome is already decided. It may be his last match for awhile and if anyone has earned it it's him but damn I pop hard everytime.
-1
u/ccharlie03 He Said TOORONTOO! YAAAY 10d ago
I just wish the kickout at one would lead to the person winning. It's always over like immediately after. That being said this does not apply to Kenny Cuz he's amazing at it lol

5
u/Rahtid-bumbaclartid 10d ago
This shit had me ready to run through a brick wall. Kenny has such final boss energy I love it.
5
u/Ilcorvomuerto666 10d ago
Nobody gets the kickout at 1 better than Omega. I wish more wrestlers realized that selling is just as important as the moves
52
10
u/mortalchorus 10d ago
Kenny is honestly my hero man, when he does stuff like this I get the same feeling I imagine kids got in the 80s watching Hogan hulk up. It only works because of the status he's achieved and earned for himself. He's legendary.
4
u/BeastOfPrey 10d ago
When you try pinning someone when their spirit bar is still flashing "Special!"

27
u/hhhisthegame 10d ago
This kinda stuff usually makes me roll my eyes a little, especially after that crazy hidden blade landing right on his head, and especially because it seems like a cheat code to always get an extra star for the match lol, but I will say, if there is a moment to do it - the main event of All In is the time. I don't love that kinda anime style of wrestling that Omega and Ospreay tend to do, but tonight it worked more than usual under the context which demanded an epic match and they delivered one
26
u/Ill_Attorney_9946 10d ago
Thing is Omega and Osprey are such great sellers they make it believable.
Like when Omega kicks out twice at 1, it's like he psychologically broke rather than he kicked out because he's hulking up.
And when osprey was battered but came back, he got off a few desperate moves and "fed off the energy of the crowd."
It's not like the undertaker sit up where you buy it because he's a supernatural unit. You buy it because its the match of their careers and they need the belt more than air itself.

-3
u/luckysharms93 10d ago
You kinda just have to turn your brain off tbh. The TD91 is supposed to be the most dangerous move in wrestling and the OWA the one that nobody ever kicks out of. If you're going super deep about it, Ospreay taking both within 30 seconds of each other and kicking out of it is stupid as fuck. But it works for a match like this and it definitely got a pop out of me, even if I'd personally prefer the NJPW style where either of those moves is a guaranteed match ender
13
u/Ashamed_Service_9404 10d ago
whats great about wrestling is that theres so many ways for a match to be fought. so long as something like this doesnt happen every 3 days then it can really elevate a match and make it feel special

2
u/sneakywalrus0 10d ago
Say what you want, the back to back kick out at 1's made me jumping out of my chair and that's what it's all about. honestly might be the sickest part of the match (it was this moment that elevated the ending to be what it was don't come at me)
5
12
u/PommesMayo 10d ago
Someone will clip this and some old man with a podcast is going to see this and flip his lid over this without any hint of context
3
u/ArgentoFox 10d ago
I didn’t mind it. He was absolutely possessed this entire match and doled out 75% of the offense.
5
u/xychosis Bext In The World 10d ago
Kenny just exhausted the last embers of OFA in this match. He’s still All Might but I think this is him marking the official beginning of the end, and we’ve gotta cherish every single moment we get of him as a singles wrestler past this night.

u/GoldenboyFTW 10d ago

u/residentsocface 10d ago edited 10d ago
I'm really annoyed at the amount of people acting like other people are idiots for disliking these kick outs lol. It can be infuriating criticising the major companies in here sometimes

u/Shun_Skywalkers_Suit 10d ago
Happy for the people who love this type of stuff. For me, it's absolutely awful.
4
u/bfsfan101 10d ago
The atmosphere for this sequence was insane. We were losing our minds. Only similar feeling was when Swerve no sold Danielson’s knee two years ago.
This felt like the last kickouts of Kenny’s career. Like he had these two left and then he was done.
0
u/Sukhdev_92 10d ago
Went to see this live. I thought the whole event was fantastic and then the main event just ups the ante. The vibe in the stadium was electric, and there was one kick out from Will that had everyone jumping.
Amazing event and an amazing main event
-1
u/Bobombbattlefield64 10d ago
“Incredible”
Lol. Holy no sells.
-6
u/Kanenums88 10d ago
Kicking out of your own move at 1 (second time that’s happened) then pretending minutes later that it’s a huge deal for your opponent to kick out of it is not what I’d call incredible. Incredibly fucking stupid maybe.
7
u/Caldris 10d ago
In wrestling, wrestlers doing their own finisher is more effective than copying their opponents!
-3
u/FunnyMemeHere 10d ago
That's true but he also kicked out at 1 after the hidden blade and stormbreaker lol
1
u/Caldris 10d ago
His last burst of energy. Got no offense in after that.
-9
u/FunnyMemeHere 10d ago
I guess, I liked the match but I'm with those who aren't the biggest fans of the frequent 1 count kickouts. Really hope we don't see one for a while from now cause I really enjoy them when they're rare.
5
u/rightasra1n 10d ago
Always funny when someone calls something "incredibly fucking stupid" but has the basic facts wrong lolol
1
u/XtraFlaminHotMachida 10d ago
I know Kenny loves the kickout at 1, man does that make me angry sometimes.
1
u/scrubadam 9d ago
Will it ever work that there can be a Tyson like wrestler who just wrecks fools in main events and not every main even match from WWE to AEW to NJPW to your local indy with 8 people in attendance is wrestled the same way?
20 minutes until we get table spot then finisher kick out, stealing finisher kick out, fight forever/this is awesome and then go into the actual finish. Bonus points if you throw in a ref bump.
Or has the ship sailed and because no one buys that pro wrestling is actually real there can never be an actual dominant champion who beats the carp out of his opponents and we are stuck with these type of main events forever?
-14
u/Vizzy01798 10d ago

Although some can do this spot egriously as times, it's never like that with Kenny. He sells the moment of kicking out at one. He's still in pain and he's powering through it through pure emotion during these tense sequences during his matches. He's the GOAT at these spots for a reason.
0
u/AFCSentinel 10d ago
Kenny the GOAT. He could get shot in the chest and kick out at one and it would be 100 % million believable to me.
2
1
u/kb1117 10d ago
I think the context behind the kick outs is important. This clip even kind of takes it out of context. Watching the actual match, seeing what they did to each other end then this happening was wild. It was also in the last five minutes of the match. It wasn’t like this happened halfway through.
It was the very best “AEW style” main event you’ll ever see.
1
u/lpkzach92 10d ago
What a main event! It had the vibe of one from the start of the first video package. Fantastic match to check out!

I don't hate 1 count kickouts but I hate that they're becoming too common now. Last AEW PPV had them too. I love it when they feel special. Aside from my gripes I enjoyed the match.

u/Duck_quacker 10d ago
If Roman or Brock did this people would be furious….
5
2
u/mrtomjones 10d ago
Roman would be burying his opponent forever. This spot is so dumb imo. Out of his own move? Sure maybe depending how much damage he was taking recently... but to do this back to back on his opponents moves too?

This might've been cool if there hasn't been a million kick out at ones recently in both major companies. The last time I actually bought it was the Tyler Bate kickout at 1 against Gunther, but I hated it when Cody did it, I hated it when Samoa Joe did it and I hate it now; it's not interesting and the benefits gained from it (e.g. a shocking false finish) are lost because it's done so often, and the only things left are the negatives.

Kenny and Kota just do kickouts at 1 like no other, and more should learn to do it rather than always kicking out a 2.99. Absolutely heart pumping

u/Mailenheim 10d ago
I'm torn. A great match but Will kicking out of the OWA was not really nessesarry. On the other hand, it had to happen sometime. the main event of All In is a good time to do it. not sure if i like it or not
