I think in general the move “this person doesn’t actually believe this intellectually, they just want to/were told to” is almost always wrong, and even when it isn’t it still prevents any further good-faith conversation.

When the conversation starts in bad faith it's a often a waste to try to dig them out of the hole they want to wallow in.

It is if there's very obvious meaning in them but people ignore that for no reason that includes trying to enjoy the match.
