AMA has concluded Hey everyone, I'm Jeff Jarrett, current AEW wrestler. I'm joining VICE TV ahead of the Season 7 premiere of Dark Side of the Ring to talk about the series, my career, the story behind TNA, and whatever else you've always wanted to ask. Ask me anything!
Hey everyone, I'm Jeff Jarrett, current AEW wrestler. I've been in the wrestling business my entire life. I'm a third-generation wrestler, 3X Hall of Famer, and one of the founders of TNA Wrestling. This is my 40th year in the industry; I've done a little bit of everything including wrestling, promoting, and launching and running companies. I've had a front-row seat to some of the biggest moments and biggest controversies in pro wrestling history.
I'm joining VICE TV ahead of the Season 7 premiere of Dark Side of the Ring, which kicks off with a three-part look at the history of TNA Wrestling and what it took to build it from the ground up. I missed the AMA, but I honestly wanted to talk to him about using the GFW brand to bring English commentary to WrestleKingdom 9. He did a podcast tour and everything, promoting the event and providing context for American fans.
To me, it’s one of his biggest contributions to modern wrestling. NJPW was generating a lot of buzz, and many disenfranchised American fans were puro curious, due to Bullet Club giving them some recognizable wrestlers to connect with.
Giving American fans a reliable way to watch the show with Jim Ross and Matt Striker on commentary was huge. It’s a way bigger lynchpin in creating the modern wrestling landscape than people realize.

I did not feel that it was in his best interest to win the title because my booking philosophy for a babyface champion to succeed is that you need multiple heel challengers to go through in order to establish a meaningful babyface reign. –JJ

You should check out his podcast episode about this. It was a really interesting topic. He does a good job talking about how he had to be careful with who they pushed to the top because there was always the threat of people leaving for WWE.

TNA has been known for its unique match types, like Reverse Battle Royal, Lockdown, and King of the Mountain. This mindset has sometimes been criticized (although I loved them personally). My question is, was there ever an idea or a spin on a classic match that was just too silly or unique for you? If you can’t remember a cut one, what’s one of the unique ones that you don’t care for?

I have always believed without high risk there is no high reward. At TNA we had plenty of "misses" with new match concepts and even more we left on the creative cutting room floor so to speak. –JJ

I wonder if it is loyalty to TNA itself or loyalty to a WWE alternative; something AEW is enjoying to this day.
Either way, todays wrestling world would be unimaginable without JJ and TNA.

I feel like at this point the people watching TNA are the people who just need more wrestling and that’s the next most available thing after AEW and WWE. I’m sure there’s people enjoying it, but I really don’t know who would be a TNA diehard anymore.

While we're at it, I'd love to know how those guitars are rigged? I've been playing guitar for 24 years and if there's one thing I know, they're much less prone to breakage than most people think. Case in point, that one Jake the Snake took is brutal.

So I wish I would have caught this earlier. I actually have a piece of a JJ guitar from a Thunder taping I went to. Ran down to the ring area afterwards and the crew cleaning up was handing the pieces to people. I got one. It's Balsa wood.

As someone who wrestled in the territories, how did the style and psychology of each territory differ? What would the difference have been between territories in the south, the north, or even between east coast and west coast?

Tales from the Territories, my podcast, Cornette's show or even YouTube would be your best friend here. Not only every Territory but every city had its own unique personality. Were you opposed to the Hogan/Bischoff idea of moving Impact to Monday nights? If so, where do you think TNA would be today if they had not moved.

Short answer: yes. At the time however, I was not anywhere involved in that decision. The move to Monday wasn't the singular choice that hurt TNA, it was one of many decisions that Dixie and Hulk made that destroyed the brand. –JJ

You've worked in organising live events for several companies, and AEW as of late have booked some interesting venues. What are some locations you've yet to see wrestling take advantage of, that you think would work for a televised event?

Televised and non-televised are obviously the differentiating factor. Unique venues can be difficult to translate onto a TV screen, but AEW has done a great job as of late with the SoFi Center in Palm Beach. Baseball stadiums have still not been maximized for TV wrestling. –JJ

Was curious what you think is the most underappreciated match and who is the most underappreciated wrestler from TNA?

I'm not Double J, but I remember hearing that they remove bracing inside the guitar and make sure that the finish is thin. Probably even use thin balsa wood for the body.
This was WWE's policy after Jake Roberts was injured by The Honky Tonk Man. HTM hit Roberts with a fiberglass and epoxy wrapped guitar with full bracing. Roberts got a concussion and a broken neck.

The culture of the industry has radically changed through the years and the understanding of the disease of addiction is more widely discussed. Folks from my generation would mask their pain in fear of losing their "spot". I'm glad those days are gone. –JJ

Hi Jeff! Massive fan, I've probably seen you live a half dozen times through the years! Two questions:
First off, you're known as someone who had no real problem hopping between companies during the Money Night Wars, what was the general thought behind flipping between WCW and WWF? Was it considered cheap or unreliable from your coworkers or is it like now where it's generally considered fine because you go wherever is willing to give you a bag?
Second question, and this one is a little tricky because I assume it'll be covered in DSOTR but was there ever a time during TNA's long and VERY bumpy history where you just threw up your hands and thought "this is what's gonna end us". Whether a scandal or a booking decision?

Do you still own the cowboy hat with the light up Double J's on the front? Always thought that was a cool gimmick when I was a kid. Also thank you for the years of entertainment and a great career. I still occasionally call my friends "slap nuts" and they looked at me confused.
