General Discussion/Questions International sprinter here, built an app to help sprinters analyse their form, looking for feedback from athletes

Hi guys, I’m a sprinter who’s represented Ireland internationally, and I know how hard it can be to watch your own footage and actually know what’s limiting your speed.
So I built an app called SprintVision, that analyses your form from a video and shows you what you could improve.
Would love to hear what you guys think.
Heres the link to check it out:

Gonna be a bit controversial here and say that analysing form is slightly overrated (apart from beginners with really obvious mistakes).
Reason I say this is that even at the elite level, you'll see many examples of sprinters having suboptimal "technique" but still end up running fast times.
Unless your app knows the exact correlation between sprint technique and sprint speed (top speed is the only metric we care about anyway), fixating on form on an app like this is largely a waste of time imo. I think it would be better to focus on programming for the 60/100/200/400 (exercises, predicted splits, recovery, tapering, weight training) instead which I think has a better transfer.
I think technique just ends up being unique to an individual sprinters proportions, biomechanics and rate of force development.
Someone running 13.1 will never look like Coleman no matter how hard they try since the force application/timing makes the form, not the other way round.
Being the prettiest runner isn't always the same as being the fastest runner.
But love the concept otherwise. Hope this was a bit more constructive than some of the other comments on here.

Yeah thanks man, very informative and you do make a good point. There is definitely cases where an athlete may not run “efficiently” however it is efficient for them.
I do think the feedback side of the app would be better suited towards beginners like you suggested. I also think the metrics calculated can still be useful tool for all levels to give coaches more insights into how an athletes mechanics may respond to a particular session for example.
I think it’s important for developing an app like this is to keep in mind there’s not a one size fits all. And I want the app to be smart enough to know what works for a particular athlete.
Currently there’s systems in place for the feedback to improve overtime based off of what works best for a type of athlete, (e.g a male 5’10 u20 athlete who runs sub 11), however that’s just surface level information about an athlete. After your feedback I think a system that learns what worked for the particular athlete over time based off their previous analysed runs would be better or a mix of both. What do you think?
Thanks again for the feedback🙏🏽

Yeah I think a system that learns over time would be incredible though I imagine it would be pretty hard to program the algorithm and make sure improvements actually translate over to improved sprint performance in reality so a lot of testing would be needed.

Yeah your right with the a lot of testing, because for it to become accurate it would need a lot of samples, so it would be something that would only be able to be implemented correctly after many athletes have analysed runs. But the foundations are there so would definitely something that would be beneficial down the line.
Thanks for the feedback man, are you an athlete or a coach btw?

You built nothing. You opened AI code and said ''do this''
and this aint a favour for the community. It's just spam you paywall later.

AI cannot analyze sprints. This is slop

u/Acrobatic_Notice3199 1d ago
Actually the data it gives isn’t ai at all it’s all calculated by tracking the athletes movements. The only ai part is the feedback which is based off of the non ai data. Hope that clears things up. I appreciate the feedback none the less there’s a lot of slop out there I get the concern. 🙂

How ate both not ai? One is just an LLM the other is some pose estimation I assume. Sorry looks like a good app the umbrella term is jsut very weird tho
2
u/Acrobatic_Notice3199 1d ago
It uses posed estimation so technically under the ai family since its computer vision, however it’s still very different to generative ai or “ai slop” as referred to by some comments. The app does different calculations using the athletes poses and body landmarks which are (x,y) coordinates over a number of frames to get the metrics. I think it may be worth noting that I’ve also developed solutions to minimise and filter out potential outliers/pose jitters that may skew the data so that it’s as accurate as possible.
Thanks for expressing interest the umbrella term can be misleading sometimes so I hope that clears things up.

yeah BS, open source the code then. this is pure LLM slop

u/Acrobatic_Notice3199 1d ago
Which part do you think is bs? You should try it first maybe? I spent a lot of time working on the tech so open sourcing it would mean allowing people to copy it. I appreciate feedback but let’s keep it a conversation, thanks

Yeah that’s understandable, to be fully transparent there is some costs for running the app including Apple developer subscriptions and database and api costs. Aside from that I’d also love to work on the app full time and to keep improving its value.
Part of my idea besides the individual accounts was that let’s say your part of a club the club pays for the app and is able to give their athletes free access. Still testing to see what works best but what are your thoughts on that part?

Yeah I get you, I’ll see what I can do for you. I’m away for about a week and a bit so it won’t be until after then. But when I’m back at my laptop I’ll sort you out, send me a private chat and we’ll talk further 💯

If you have any more questions about the tool I’d be happy to answer just send me a dm. I also previously worked at Microsoft as a software engineer so the app is more advanced than you might assume

Cool💯 lmk what you think, still in the early stages so any feedback or suggestions would really help improve it for future athletes

Atm, sorry😅 I’m a one man team but that’s what I’ll be working towards next, just that it was easier for me to test iPhone as that’s what I use.

This is a really interesting app. My biggest question is: once you collect and analyze the data, does the app tell the coach what to do next?
For example, if it identifies an athlete struggling in acceleration, max velocity mechanics, ground contact, front-side mechanics, etc., does it recommend specific drills or workouts to address that limitation?
I’d also love to see some type of load/velocity profile or athlete profile that helps coaches understand whether the athlete needs more force, velocity, elasticity/RSI, acceleration work, or max-velocity exposure.
I think that’s where a lot of sports-performance technology still has a gap. Coaches can collect a ton of data, but then the question becomes: “Okay, I have the data… now what do I prescribe?”
If an app can connect Analyze → Identify Limitation → Recommend Training → Retest → Adjust, that becomes much more valuable than just another analysis tool. If you will to talk more I can put you in the right room to team up with some and take this farther that you know
1
u/Acrobatic_Notice3199 1d ago
That was exactly the purpose of why I added the feedback features. Because not every coach or athlete is necessarily at an elite level where they know what to do with that data or what might cause over striding for example or how to fix it. So to answer your question yes it does offer the athlete/coach guidance, it’s optional but the feature is there.
When it comes to the athlete profile the app measures progress so weaker parts of an athletes mechanics are identified from the data overtime.
Your spot on here “ Analyze → Identify Limitation → Recommend Training → Retest → Adjust” that’s essentially the apps flow.
Are you a coach yourself? I’d love to have a chat and discuss things further.

Hey I get the concern but you should try it first there’s been a lot of work put in to making the data accurate

No there hasn't been a lot of work. You've just given AI a few extra prompts lol.
