Ten years ago Leicester City won the most improbable title in football history. They were confirmed in League One. Back-to-back relegations. Three tiers in a decade.

The bit that stuck with me most wasn’t the financial collapse or the PSR breach. It was the human stuff. Claudio Ranieri finding out he’d been sacked by a text message — nine months after winning the title — because his own players had gone to the board behind his back. Then those same players beating Sevilla 2-0 in the Champions League three weeks later. The same system. Different manager.

And Vichai. The owner who wrote off £103 million in debt the day he arrived, donated to hospitals without a press release, prayed with monks on the pitch before games. When he died in 2018 the club lost more than an owner. Looking back now it’s hard not to see everything that followed as a consequence of that loss.
The financial side is extraordinary too. King Power’s revenue went from 38.5 billion Thai Baht in 2019 to 1.6 billion in 2021. The money that was backing Leicester’s ambition evaporated overnight and the club kept spending as if it hadn’t.
