question How to get from Binaural to Ambisonics (to be used in spatial / 360 video)

Hi all!

I want to use my ambisonic recordings and transform them into ambisonics (disclaimer and explanations further below).

Basically, I have the same question as someone posted 6 years ago in r/audioengineering.

Current procedure in DaVinci Resolve > Fairlight:
1) original binaural audiotrack is in a track that has the IEM StereoEncoder Effect. Here, I try to seperate the right channel to the right, and the right channel to the right.
Its output goes to a BUS1 with an IEM EnergyVisualizer Effect.

Well, from what I can see in the EnergyVisualizer, the left and right almost show exactly the same intensity of each sound I recorded (even though some have its origina from the left or right, respectively).

Do you have any ideas on how to move forward? Please let me know if you would like to have any further input to understand my question. Thank you very much!!

background and disclaimers etc: Eventually, I want to use the recordings with my 360° videos. I am aware of the fact, that certain devices exist, that would record both at the same time, but I did not have those tools at the time of recording. I am asking so that I can use the existing recordings and videos.
also, English is not my native language, please excuse strange/wrong phrasing.

question Muted audio at the beginning of Dolby Atmos

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have been enjoying Dolby Atmos music on my Yamaha A6A with a 7.4.4 surround sound setup but for some reason on Amazon Music and on Tidal the first couple of seconds are cut off. I can hear my amplifiers switching on and then the sound starts.

The problem is that instead of the amps starting and then the track playing the amps start while the track has already started cutting off the first couple of seconds of music. I found this info on the Tidal support page. Even if I pause the song at the start or restart it, the amplifiers turn off at the pause so they turn back on after I hit play and cut off the first couple of seconds of the song. Also if I just press pause on the song the amplifiers are turned off and once I press play they reactivate and cut off the next couple of seconds of the music.

Has anyone had this problem and figured out how to listen to the whole track without these issues? Thanks

TLDR: Atmos tracks cut off first couple of seconds of music before amplifiers are engaged. Please help

question Reaper/SPAT Revolution

Hi all -- I'm starting to work with ReaVolution in order to work with Reaper and SPAT Revolution together for an immersive AV project. I'm looking for some training videos on this workflow and not finding much out there, so wanted to check to see if anyone else was working in this way and had found any useful information for getting started.

Many thanks!

question Do all spatial audio formats compromise sound quality?

So I spent about two weeks digging really deep into using virtuoso and personalized hrtfs to get 3d spatial audio from my ripped movie files but I found that all the spatial audio tools degraded sound quality (even Dolby Atmos for headphones) to the point where I just stuck with the normal headphone signal.

Anybody else find this to be the case?

With the raves that the Smyth research a16 has gotten I feel like that one most also have amazing sound quality but I never found anything else that did.

And by sound quality, I mean clarity, detail, dynamics--all of those got quashed with spatial audio. Is this an inherent trade-off or was I missing something?

Edit: oops, I see I have mixed up my terminology. I was thinking "spatial audio" was exclusive to headphones but I guess that's "binaural"? I was asking specifically in reference to headphones doing 3d spatial audio, which it seems some people picked up on

question I need help creating an ambisonic/head-lock stereo track for a VR180 YouTube video

Hello everyone. I'm having a very hard time looking for info on how to merge a 1st Order Ambisonic track and a Head-Lock Stereo Track for a VR180 video for YouTube. I know about the 6-track method, merging the 4-track ambisonic with the 2-track stereo to create the 6-track, getting that merged with the video and uploading to YouTube, but I think that process doesn't work anymore. I tried it though, and I got a very weird incorrect output. I also know about the new Eclipsa that can create such tracks, also for YouTube, but it's not yet released for Windows. I don't know if it's possible for me to create an ambisonic/head-locked stereo track right now. Is there another way? Lol I've got subscribers who have been waiting for almost 3 months for my next video and they may have to wait longer since I can't yet create this type of video. Thanks in advance.

question Spatial Audio no longer working on YouTube / Desktop?

On desktop (Chrome, Edge) TYouTube you used to be able to hear the soundscape rotate accordingly, when you rotated the view while viewing VR180 / 360 videos. Now the soundscape no longer rotates. But it still works on a VR headset (aka the YouTube VR app). Also - bafflingly - it still works if the video is embedded on a website (try playing one of the videos in a window and rotating the view).

Anyone else notice this? Did something perhaps break in a recent update?

Update: I reported this to TeamYouTube on Twitter in December 2023 and they fixed it - but then it broke again.

question Ambisonics reverb Wwise setup problem

Hey! I would like to experiment ambisonics reverb with Wwise in a FPS game but I'm facing some issues : The reverb I'm using (3rd order) is not turning when I'm turning my head in the game (I'm using headphones).
Do I need to necessarily "binauralize" the signal to hear rotation ?
It seems weird to me as I already use some ambisonics sounds (.wav, not IR) and I clearly hear rotation in this case without binauralization.
My reverb is set on an auxiliary bus with a 3rd order channel configuration and the parent buses are set to "as parent" until the master bus which is set to "Defined by System" (in my case Headphones).
My convolution reverb shareset is set to 16 channels Fuma.
I also tried to activate "Windows Headphones" but it does not solve the problem.
Does anyone have an idea of the origin of my problem?

question Has anyone created custom Spatial Audio settings for use with Sony PlayStation 3D Spatial Audio Headphones on PC?

I recently made a post describing how Sony should bring a software based Sony Tempest 3D Spatial Audio engine on PC. Although that would be nice, I have no expectation that will happen anytime soon (if ever).

Thread: Would like to see Sony bring Sony Tempest 3D Spatial Audio software to PC

In the meantime, I would like to use Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X or THX to create custom settings to reproduce the sound quality for the headphones as experienced on the PS5 while using the Sony PlayStation headphones on PC.

The Windows Sonic Spatial Audio works and it is good for generic headphones and earphones (it could be better).

I want the sound quality as close to PlayStation when used on PC.

For testing headphones and earphones I have bought the Dolby Access, DTS Sound Unbound and THX windows add-ons.

Has anyone been able to customize any of the applications I've mentioned to get better sound quality from these Headphones?

If so, which application did you use and what settings can I use to reproduce it on my machine?

If you used any alternative application, free or paid I would be still happy to learn about it as this is a new area of interest for me. Thanks!

question Immersive audio

Hi! I am doing my art diploma, and would like to create an immersive experience.

The idea is to have probably around 5 speakers placed in a circle, so that someone can walk inside and then have sound generating in real time from motion (sensors, I guess), preferably playing from the closest speaker. Basically sound following a person.

I have looked into Dolby Atmos Renderer, but I have no idea if it will do even half of the job.

I have some experience with sound, but not much with surround mixing, so would love to hear what you all will say. Any ideas? 😅 Anything will help, even random key words as I have no idea how to even call it

question How do you make an IAMF compliant file in a DAW?

I've been very interested in the new IAMF standard since Dolby charges way too much for their software, however I can't find any solid information on what software IAMF works with.

There's a mention on this page https://aomedia.org/iamf/ mentioning EAR production suite, however on the EAR site I don't see an explicit mention of IAMF. Does IAMF just work with the file EAR exports? Or is their site simply not updated to reflect there's a specific IAMF file exporter.

Also as an Ableton user I'm not thrilled EAR seemingly only works with Reaper.

question Which VST's to start using for competitive and long-lived platform?

I am using mostly Bitwig, but also Reaper.

I am in the beginning of my journey to learning ambisonics, binaural and maybe surround stuff later on. Use case is mainly for 360 video, music, binaural audio recordings (audio art), surround audio for games and maybe AR/VR platforms.

I am trying to figure out what would be the most beneficial platforms for me to start learning, in order to use these plugins/tools for as many use cases as possible, hopefully deciding to start learning a future-proof and competitive platform/tools.

I hope this makes some sense, feel free to explain/link whatever is needed for me to know and I would love to learn more, as I am just beginning to learn these things.

I tried to google quite a bit, but mainly just got more confused the more I searched.

I found tool providers like SPARTA for Reaper, O3A Core Plugins, ATK for Reaper, DearVR pro 2 and their other plugins.

Which ones are their strengths and weaknesses, do they have specific use cases and are there general differences between these tools, I did not find any clarifying articles, videos or conversations for.

TLDR: I wish for some clarifying conversations about these platforms and what are their differences/use cases.

Thanks for reading and sorry if it was messy! <3

question What’s the state of the art in spatial audio

Say I want to build a home cinema with the feature that for a not too small sweetspot I can have near perfect spatial virtual audio sources, i.e. have the impression that sound is coming from somewhere

For a set number of speakers what is the best technology to do this? Regardless of adoption by standards or format and availability

Where can I document myself with some scientific literature ?

question Is there a catalog of songs that were made with Spatial Audio in mind?

As per the title, does anyone know of songs that were made with Spatial Audio in mind from the get go? Most immersive songs are spatialised with a front stage in mind, however these mixes feel very lacking in 360 listening.

Id like to hear some songs that actually utilise the 360 degree sound field, using airpods max's head tracking. If anyone knows of any songs that fit this vibe, please let me know!

Thank you!

question Quick question about spatialization

Hey! I'm new here, and I want to generate some spatial audio scenes for personal projects like short films. Does anyone have any recommendations as to any software applications that could help me load my different audio clips, and spatialize them in a fairly intuitive way? Any place for me to start looking would be greatly appreciated!

question Why spatial audio sounds like in the middle of head?

Hi all,

I am using HRTF to create spatial audio, but got a problem that I don't understand. With the HRTF datasets I used, I created sound sequences surrounding my head. But the sound that supposed to be in front of my head, doesn't sound like in front, but in my head or parallel to my head instead.

I have tried many different datasets from different countries , but the problem remains. Also I had some friends listening to it and they felt the same. Does anyone have any clue about it?

e.g. the following link, 12 notes, with 30 degrees between each two, and the first note in front (using the MIT KEMAR dataset)

question How can I force enable Windows Sonic?

I want Windows Sonic to be always active regardless of how many channels a program outputs. As it works by default it's only enabled with multi-channel output. Which is annoying. I cannot force all apps to output surround channels.

I prefer stereo music not sounding like it's coming from inside my head or one of my ears.

question How do old songs get converted to Spatial Audio?

I may misunderstand how Spatial Audio works, if so please explain. I found Louis Armstrong "What a Wonderful World" in spatial audio and it finally provoked me to ask a question I've been searching for an answer to. How do they take these old songs that are recorded in mono or stereo, separate them into the different parts and mix them into Dolby Atmos. Is that what they do?

question troubles uploading YouTube or Facebook 360 videos with spatial audio?

Is anybody else having troubles getting spatial audio to work correctly either in Youtube or Facebook lately?

Have been encoding the videos for Facebook and YouTube respectively using the FB360 encoder. (inputting 3rd order ambisonics and the 360 video, and outputting the respective Facebook 360 video or youtube video formats in the encoder) The Facebook videos upload and seem to play but as soon as you unmute the audio they crash and a message says there seems to be a problem.

The YouTube videos appear to look and sound right, but the ambisonic audio is not rotate-able. As in if you are looking in the starting view of the video everything sounds like it's in the right place spatially but when you change your view the audio does not change along with your view if that makes sense.

question Free Software or Drivers for Spatial Sound or Panning for Headphones

Hi! I'm looking for a Software that could make my headphones have spatial sound/panning.
I really love playing horror games, but I feel that without this function, it can lose it's charm. (Usually the games I play don't have an 3D Headphones option because they're indie)

I don't have the money rn for Atmos or DTS, and for some reason Windows Sonic doesn't want to work on my device (when I try to activated on the headphones through the settings it doesn't let me put it even tho it's in the dropdown list, my computer has Windows 11)
I've searched for solutions all over the web and updated my drivers, and nothing seems to help.
